Bees Player interviews

I'm getting really pissed off with the quality of recent interviews, we all know GP is on the Heathrow flightpath so why do we interview without noise cancelling mikes or move to a location where we can actually hear what's being talked about. And whilst we're on the subject, the new interviewer in almost unintelligible, all his words roll into each other. Get some diction lessons please or find another outlet for your talents.

And stop asking a prepared question that has already been answered!!

Dunno who the bloke is asking the questions, but he's in the wrong job!!

Well we have progressed from under the flightpath to the plant room, now we have to have the accompaniment of spinning motors. Will nobody give the interviewer a nice quiet office to do his work in? His diction has improved a little but still leaves a lot to be desired if he wants to make a career out of this.
Andre sounds just like DJ

the interviewer isn't that good I agree, seems like he doesn't know what to ask

Bees Player interviews

The interview with Warbs is very good and it just makes you realise just how lucky we are to have him as our Manager. None of the usual football manager clichés just a real knowledge of the game and great desire for the club to progress... Thanks Matthew for putting all this together....

Bees Player interviews

Just listened to the David Button interview. Ridiculous questions like 'Were you pleased with how last season went?' and 'Is the Championship something you are looking forward to?' I love the fact we get plenty of interviews on BP but for gods sake don't ask questions that have such bleedin obvious answers.

Bees Player interviews

Chris Wickham is our best interviewer in my opinion and we are very lucky to have him. It's like eavesdropping in on an intelligent private conversation rather than a formal interview.

Uwe seemed to "hate" him as he asked questions rather than gave him licence to cliché him away, I used to laugh as CW dived in to takeover the interview and Uwe's facial features visibly changed into a frown....:D
The questions to MW in that 9 minutes one the other day were so wet and rubbish IMO, not CW by the way.

Not so sure. If your preference is for leading questions that require the answer "yes definitely" then I would agree. He also seems unsure of what he is going to ask next.

As said above, Chapman is the best of the bunch.

Oh wait, maybe you weren't joking? I don't want to be mean, but as the professionalism levels of the club rise, surely we have to find someone who can ask a question that's designed to reveal information, rather than just showing off their own thoughts? I know Luis M is a volunteer but I'd much rather see him do the job.

Totally agree. Much better than the person currently doing the interviewing. At times I was unable to catch what the question was that was asked, and even the players
being interviewed looked puzzled.

to be fair, that's a lot of progress in the 10hrs since you started the thread. will be up at Michael Parkinson levels by the end of the week

Sorry abee, can't agree with that at all unless you mean he is the master of the leading question. So many times a player or management rep could have said yes or no eg. "Is it important to respond straight away when you go behind early like that??"Erm that's a tough one!! " You got the goal just before half time. Is that an important time to score?" Erm let me think about that. I've mentioned a number of times on here that Chris needed an interviewing techniques course and learnt to understand the power of open questions. Sounds harsh but true. Best interviewer by a mile is Louis Melville who Uwe treated appallingly. Louis is the only one that asks really challenging open questions IMHO. Mark Chapman also does it well too.

Don't forget Billy Reeves.

Bees Player interviews

Luis is great. The best by a country mile but he doesn't work in the Media department so we wouldn't get him interviewing unless on matchdays. Shame. Haven't listened to the interviews yet, so will reserve judgement!

Bees Player interviews

We need to get this sorted out immediately, especially as Rotherham are signing Jeremy Paxman on a free from Newsnight to do their interviews.

I think you're all being a bit harsh. I thought the interviews were okay. Footballers are often far from being the easiest interviewees, especially those whose answers hardly stretch beyond half a dozen words and trot out all the well-used clichés.

However, no doubt about it, Luis Melville is the best interviewer by a million miles although Billy Reeves is also good. Unfortunately, the club's media team churn out the same old bland, non-intrusive questions every time although I suspect that's their remit.

Not harsh at all. Our players and management team saved the day on many occasions last year when they were served up the most banal questions. Two examples quoted in an earlier post and I cited many more examples after games last season. Remember, this Club now stands for quality on and off the pitch and the Media Team should be at the forefront of this approach. A question for you. Why when Mark Chapman (who is part of the Media Team) does them do we get a quality interview?

Bees Player on which these interviews are carried is a chargeable service. If you're going to charge then make it completely professional!!

That would be good for a laugh!!

JP-Were you at fault for the goal?
Player- they scored against the run of play
JP- Were you at fault for the goal?
Player-Thought the lino missed a push on our lad to be honest.
JP-Were you at fault for the goal. Yes or no?
Player-it's a team game
JP-This is like interviewing Michael bloody Howard. I'll ask again. Were you at fault............continues for next 20mins

lol

An encounter with Steve Evans after a heavy defeat may be too much for one or both of them though.

The media team do an adequate job but 'lucky to have him'...? Yes, if you want a 'bleedin' obvious' line of questioning. We've coasted along for years but when people are paying for a service they need quality. Not 'club-speak'.

Personally, I find his technique far too much on the sycophantic and, unless it is Billy asking the questions, won't stick around.

Beesplayer has many strengths - Luis's anchoring, Billy's / Mark Burridge's comms and Mick Cabble so why not play more to these?

Its interesting that technically the Beesotted interviews done with a phone are often better.

If you don't want "club speak" then you are paying the wrong people.

You assume I'm still paying for it. And it's why I write so much nonsense in my own time these days

Likewise, if I had a chance to vote the media team on/off when buying my season ticket that you can be assured I'd exercise my right to do so !
Several strengths but many weaknesses, too

If 'monkeymagic' doesn't like Chris Wickham then maybe we should shoot for Adrian Chiles who is by far the most knowledgeable and incisive football interviewer on television and he oozes charisma. His understanding of the game is breathtaking. He's probably on about the same monies as Chris and I know a friend of a friend of his. I'll make the call tomorrow.

Fascinating. You know somebody who knows Adrian Chiles? Are we supposed to be impressed?
Why wait? Make that call tonight.
Or is it just cheap shot sarcasm? Surely not..?

Chris' technique is not great. And as a fan and a paying subscriber, I'm entitled to an opinion. Which I'll happily state .
And yes, I agree, I would prefer Chiles to the current incumbents. Which is saying a lot

:) AC's head is also exactly the same size, shape and weight as an old-school leather football. It's why he got the job.

Agree with both you and Abee to an extent - and, no, i haven't got splinters in my rear end. When I used to subscribe to Beesplayer (at a time when I couldn't get to some games) I found Chris Wickham a knowledgeable commentator but he also came across as very arrogant (i'm sure he isn't but that's how it sounded) and was by far the least engaging of the commentary team. When he began doing the player and manager interviews I found him incredibly sycophantic and his line of questioning entirely unchallenging and very predictable - other than when they were conducted at the training ground when all I could hear was 747s! I think that as we move up the leagues and attract more press attention we may hear/read attempts at more incisive and informative interviews from national media but let's face it what do the majority of managers/players trot out to anyone but the party line?

Bees Player interviews

Haven't watched any of the close season stuff, will try and catch up tonight. I can only comment on the Match Day Live stuff which I think is in all very good and especially excellent from Messrs Melville, Burridge and Cabble.

Obviously love the Beesotted videos but cant help thinking there is quite a difference in the creative boundaries allowed. Maybe there shouldn't be. I'd just be scared if the official club comms became less formal we'd see more along the lines of "#trophyfriends".

Bees Player interviews

The new signing player interviews do have a tendency to ask the same questions "So when did you first hear of the move?", "Was it (x-trait) that sold you on joining this club?", "For those listeners who aren't as familiar with you, tell us about what sort of player you are." But that said...there aren't loads of questions you can ask when a player joins. They are the main ones so I don't begrudge them loads for using the same question sheet.

I don't listen to live commentary (prefer Soccer Sat if not at the game (and if it's a Saturday)) but I do listen to the Match Day Live pre/HT/post game uploads they put up a few days later. It is a very good service and a good listen, though the opening and closing lines always sound incredibly scripted and not natural. But that's the only real flaw I find (and a minor one) and am grateful they put up the BP:MDL a couple of days later.

Bees Player interviews

I've no real problem with the interviews, easy to criticise but after all it is not the main job of either the interviewer or interviewee ..... players are not employed for public speaking ability and some are better than others, many are nervous and will resort to cliches but surely we dont expect startling insights from them? I think that recently a new voice has been interviewing during the holiday period - could be a new lad in media team, I think they advertised a job towards end of season. If so, he's probably as nervous as the junior players he is speaking to so let's give them all a break .... I'm happy to just listen and think "He seems a nice/keen/sensible/ friendly/ dedicated bloke" at the moment , I don't expect revelations.
Oh dear, I am a bit of an old grammar bore so there is a gripe .... why does EVERYBODY seem to say "obviously" nowadays (Chris W a serial offender!) in every sentence in both questions and answers? It seems to have become the new "know what I mean?" or "innit". Grrrrrr...... irritating!
Lastly, I can't get the last Sam Saunders interview to play on beesplayer.... keep retrying but its over a week now and the newer ones are ok ....... anyone else have that problem?

Bees Player interviews

Didn't the club recently advertise for a video expert type to join their comms team? Maybe when this person comes in they'll be able to help?

Bees Player interviews

The interviewer needs to ask open questions and try to talk a bit less. It sometimes comes across that the interviewer wants to show how knowledgeable they are and it gives the interviewee nowhere to go resulting in a stilted interview. Some training on interview technique wouldnt go amiss in my opinion. Obviously the media skills of professional footballers varies significantly which doesn't help, but I do think more could be done to put them at ease and create opportunities for them to put an opinion across.

Interviewer: "Obviously you are happy with that performance, and it must of been a great feeling getting the winning goal. Added to that this your 3rd goal in 5 games so a great little scoring run you are on at the moment which must be good for your confidence. Although I have seen the replay and it looks like Harlee Dean may have got the last touch, so I guess there will be some arguments in the dressing room over that one *laughs at own joke*. Rotherham next week and I am sure you will want to keep the scoring run, but more importantly pick up the 3 points for the team to keep the pressure on the teams above."

Player A: "Yeah"
