Bees V Birmingham

Couldn't see a thread on this.

I can't wait until Saturday, bloody international weekends ruining everyone's season and with the away game it started to feel like close season.

A good one to win but our home form is becoming an issue, we need to nip this in the bud.

absolutely. A win against Birmingham is essential

Bees V Birmingham

We haven't beaten them at GP since 1954.

Saturday would be a good time to end that.

Bees V Birmingham

A win would help restore confidence but we need a positive performance just as badly with a quick start and high tempo.

A goal or three wouldn't come amiss either.

It really is down to us as Brum will sit deep and invite us onto them and hope to use their pace on the break.

Has Clayton been playing much for them??

Bees V Birmingham

My record this season is W2 D1 L5 so I'm giving it a miss in the hope that the Bees might win in my absence. Can't bear risk of watching Brumscum fans celebrating.

we have a terrible record against them, a very good team coming to us next Saturday, we need to play really well to get 3 points..

Traditionally we don't seem to enjoy success against Brum. Recent performances suggest that things wont be different this time around. So I am resigned to a win for Brum

Mine is also awful....missed the Ipswich Preston and reading games and seen the rest plus Villa...only seen us beat Forest ....

Bringing my American girlfriend for her first visit to the Bees. The whole experience will be a bit of a culture shock for her compared to watching the Galaxy, Kings, Dodgers and Lakers! A measure of the shock she is in for -

"Make sure you bring plenty of warm clothes to wear love"
"We're sitting outside??? What if it rains?"

Bees V Birmingham

OK, but as long as it's a score draw :thetruth:

Not so sure BJB...... personally I'd like us to start keeping clean sheets again....so it wouldn't be a disaster for me at 0-0.
I really thought earlier on that this might be our season, as we were good defensively, and becoming hard to beat....unfortunately that seems to have slipped rather badly.
I think we've had seven clean sheets so far, and would luv us to ratchet up many more in the near future.
In my book, it's always the sign of a successful team.

I see your point about keeping a clean sheet, but what worries me is how the last 3 teams to visit Griffin Park have (fairly easily) snuffed out our attacking threat.

Our recent record against Brum is not good, we never seem to get much from them home or away. We are currently in a bad run of form, they have had some good results recently. We are not scoring too many goals at the moment, and have started to concede more. That is why I am going for a win, 2-0, it must be our turn to get a result, we are overdue.....

A ref would be good who didn't have the undiagnosed little club big club complex. How Toral wasn't sent for the early bath that time I'll never know.

I was at Griffin Park the last time we beat Brum there in March 1954. I was 11 years old. I remember the game well as the Brum Keeper was the then current England International Gil Merrick. He had gained notoriety just a few months before when Hungary led by Ferenc Puskas put six past him at Wembley. He didn't do too well against us either, as Frank Dudley our centre forward out jumped him to head in for the Bees. Frank was nearly a foot shorter. We won 2-0 that day.
Just another memory I have in 65 years of supporting Brentford................I'm gonna miss Griffin Park :)

I have a couple of spare adult tickets for the Braemer Road tomorrow. PM if interested

I turn 40 next week and doubt I can recall that much detail from any Bees match I have attended! lol

Fair play :sorted:

Any update on ticket sales for this one? Have Brum sold out?

No team suggestions so far?

For me:

-------------------- Bentley -----------------------

----- Colin ---- Dean ---- Egan ---- Barbet -----

-------------------- Woods ------------------------

- Clarke -- Yennaris -- McEachran -- Sawyers -

-------------------- Hogan ------------------------

It's not ideal, but given injuries and recent performances, I think that's what I'd have to go for. Certain names obviously choose themselves. Firstly in defence, as much as Bjelland is the better defender, I think his lack of mobility is a real worry when playing at LB, so that's why I've gone for Barbet. You could argue that on paper our CB partnership should then probably be Dean and Bjelland, but the Dean and Egan partnership has worked well enough in the past that I think it should still be the starting choice. For the time being at least.

I'm of the opinion that even at home, we can't really risk having Clarke and Kaikai in the same team against a team like Birmingham. Both are a little suspect defensively so I think it's better to start with just the one of them (Clarke's currently the better player imo), we can then bring on the other later on if we're chasing the game. With Judge and MacLeod out, you'd say Sawyers is probably next in line for that position. I know it's not his ideal position, but I think he's got enough about him to 'do a job' there and obviously he'll chop and change with the rest of the midfield as required.

McEachran's also a bit of a gamble and can be quite hot and cold, but Vibe was absolutely dreadful against Blackburn so I don't think he deserves to start. The only other option there would be Kerschbaumer, but his lack of recent game time makes me think he may not quite be fit enough for 90 minutes. Well, I guess Saunders is another option too, but I don't really think he should be starting games at this level any more.

You could alternatively go 4-2-3-1 with obviously Nico and Woods in the holding roles, but when utilising a slightly more forward no. 10 role, I feel that Vibe/Kerschbaumer are better suited to that than McEachran are, and I've explained why I'd personally avoid starting either of those two.

It's not ideal, but with some crucial absences I think this is the best we've got right now. I'd have started Macca if he was available, but alas...

I'd tend to agree though as it seems Brum will be playing with an untested RB it might not be such a risk to have Bjelland play LB - he lacks pace but most of the time he's been shown up this has been exacerbated by the central players not providing the cover that they'd need to even for a faster LB.

I think that Smith needs to give McEachran a decent run in the side- he's clearly got something about him as seen in the QPR game and we're never going to know if that was just a freak performance if he then just gets the odd 5-10 minutes here and there. Vibe we know about already and he's not going to take any game by the scruff of the neck but can do a job if called upon as a sub (if the rest of the team is doing its job and for some reason Hogan is not available he's perfectly competent up front if unlikely to strike fear into defenders). I would hope that all the players in the squad are being conditioned to be capable of playing from the start from a fitness perspective and having just had the one game since the break I wouldn't expect there to be big differences in match fitness so it wouldn't be my reason to omit Kerschbaumer. Indeed, I still think that he probably ought to be higher up the pecking order to be given a run of starts than McEachran. At least by dropping Sawyers to the bench last week Smith has shown that he's not going to just pick him regardless so there should be genuine competition to play (I thought, to the extent that anything could be discerned from playing on Blackburn's slushpool, Sawyers looked lively and was the only player who managed to get some zip into his passing, although uncharitably it might be that he was playing at his normal tempo which seemed quick compared to the others on that surface but is glacial on a normal pitch!).

How about staying in the Globe with me, get cosy and we can watch on opta together?

Looking forward to this one as I somehow haven't seen us play the 2nd City since we came up.
As a West Brom/Walsallian/Villain, surely DS will like nothing more than sticking it up the Brum?

Just a reminder that England are playing at Twickenham this afternoon, kick off at 2.30 , if you normally come that way you may want to leave a bit earlier or find alternative route , mods please feel free to start new thread to give a wider audience .
