Stewart Vaughan Benefit Match - Dorking v Portsmouth XI, Tuesday 27 February

On Tuesday 27 February, Dorking entertain a Portsmouth FC XI in a benefit match for Stewart Vaughan, Dorking FC club captain.

Stewart recently received the news that he is suffering from terminal cancer and has but a few months to live. Portsmouth have readily agreed to send a side to Dorking to raise money for Stewart, the Portsmouth XI will be led by ex England and Arsenal captain, and Portsmouth Assistant Manager, Tony Adams,

Dorking are hoping that as many football fans as possible will turn up on the night to support the benefit match. Kick off is 7-30pm and the match will be played at Dorking's Meadowbank ground, Mill Lane, Dorking, just off Dorking High Street.

Stewart, who is only 28, has been with Dorking for 6 years (save for a spell with Spalding Utd in the 2005/6 season) during which time he has played over 130 games for Dorking. Stewart played for Dorking as recently as December 2006 when playing for the club at Chipstead and hopes to take some part in the match against the Portsmouth XI.

Stewart was a Chelsea schoolboy in his youth and is surely one of the few players who have played senior football in virtually all positions. He was a goalkeeper in his youth, and at Croydon Athletic and Leatherhead, before switching to striker for Corinthian Casuals, and then playing mostly at centre back and central midfield for Dorking, but also deputising in goal on occasions and playing as a striker when required. Stewart will be remembered for his inspiring performances during the club's promotion season from Ryman Division 2 and scored the goal that won Dorking promotion to Ryman Division One in April 2004 at Wembley.

Dorking are very grateful for the support shown by Portsmouth FC who have been exemplary in the way they have come forward to support the benefit game.

A guard of honour is intended to take place before the match from Dorking's affiliated youth sides Brockham Badgers FC, Dorking Girls FC and St Martins FC when many boys and girls from the local community will line the path of the players on to the pitch before the game.

Received at 11.34am today.

"We understand that Harry Redknapp is sending up the whole first team squad for tonight's game, so should be a great night. Do your best to come down and get their as early as possible to avoid any queues at the turnstiles."

Match is still on. DFC doing their best to get pitch as good as possible!:cool:

"Over 2,200 attended the Stewart Vaughan benefit match to pay tribute to Stewart. Stewart was able to play for a few minutes at the start of the game, having made an emotional entrance to the ground through a swathe of children from Brockham Badgers FC, St Martins FC and Dorking Girls, who had formed a guard of honour for the teams, and Stewart in particular.

Portsmouth were wonderful in all respects - in the build up to the game, in the team they put out and in the way they treated the game with a seriousness unusually seen in friendlies of this nature. At least 12 first team players for Pompey played a full part in the game, with the likes of England international Glen Johnson playing for all 90 minutes of the match. Harry Redknapp turned up for the match, as did stars Sol Campbell, Kanu and Andy Cole, to add their support to Stewart and sign hundreds of autographs without complaint.

Great efforts had been made to get the game played, with volunteers working really hard to get the game on. Even then, torrential rain on the day led to a heavy, very muddy and wet surface, and again all credit to Pompey and their players for going ahead with the fixture.

The game was a competitive affair, although both sides had agreed the game should be played with minimal contact due to the conditions. This produced a fast flowing game, made more exciting by the unpredicatable nature of the pitch due to the conditions. Dorking had their chances, but against such an array of premiership superstars, inlcuding LuaLua, Benjani, Matt Taylor, O'Brien, Richard Taylor, Todorov, Douala, Stefanofic and others, Dorking were unable to make too much of an impact. Portsmouth produced some great attacking football and led 5-0 at the interval. Goals from Todorov (3), LuaLua, Benjani, Matt Taylor and Douala gave Pompey a 7-0 win.":cool:
