I don't know if you'd class it as a u-turn but this appointment feels like an admission of poor structural planning by the current owners of Chelsea. You can tell from Poch's recent comments that they weren't a (specialist) set-piece trained team nor felt the need to embrace this facet of the game.

If it's MP grudgingly accepting this new role, given his past conflicting comments, it will be interesting to see how much reach BC has on the offensive and defensive team dynamic moving forward.

I wish Bernardo good luck in remembering all the names of their 1st team squad.

Plus ca change.

Best of luck to the guy. With specialist set piece coaches becoming more fashionable, it could be more difficult to recruit; but I think that will be outweighed by the fact so many of our set piece coaches have gone to bigger things. It makes us a very attractive destination.

It’s a recognition that in some areas we appoint world-class staff at the training ground.

I worry for him as it appears that he might be a board appointment going to a club where the manager is not buying into the concept of a set piece coach - unless of course there might be a change of manager for next season?

Some of our coaches get very good moves from us, candidates for his replacement will need to form an orderly queue.

The end result hasn't been that great but according to Opta we have an xG of +6 this season from set pieces. Only Everton have created a higher quality of chances from set pieces this season, details on this page: Premier League Stats: 2023-24 Season | The Analyst

I notice that Burnley have the highest xG against from set pieces this season so us scoring a goal from set piece tomorrow might be a decent bet.

More evidence I guess, if it were needed, of how much the long absences of Bryan and IT this season have affected us.

Can’t see us having a problem recruiting his replacement. As a club that is know. As being one of the most advanced in these areas and who like to be innovative there will be a queue of top talent applying for the job.

He’s the most animated member of the coaching team and goes mad if players don’t follow instructions and celebrates like we’ve won the FA Cup when we do score.
He’s also first one in the oppo bench faces when it gets lively on rare occasions.
We’ll miss him and his passion

Yes, he returned a couple of minutes later and was laughing with TF.
When we got the second he was leaping about and clear he loves it.
I heard from my chiropractor that one of the Chelsea Osteos left his previous job as a partner where he was earning circa decent money to a starting salary of £350K + a year as a result of being recommended by a couple of players who had used him in preference to the club staff.
Based on that I’m assuming Bernardo will be getting a serious uplift in earnings.

I think over time other clubs will take backroom staff that gave us an edge. They might want a more rapid return than we did - but for money clubs it's small change.

They will also be looking more closely at the use of stats and scouting in recruitment.

Our saving grace is that they mostly still want players who will hit the ground running.

Maybe he is saying thank you to a wonderful club and set of fans. Appreciates this is a special club. Everyone can say thank you even with some badge thumping. One of the most passionate coaches we've had and it's wonderful to see.
