best ever player

I,ve never seen a shot like the one Bill Slater scored with - all along the ground from outside the area. How many remember him? The best Bees player ever.

I remember Bill Slater very well. He was a great player. Brentford had some of the best half backs around during the fities, Bill Slater, Ron Greenwood, Jimmy Hill but I can't agree that Slater was a better player than Tommy Lawton. No idea who the best player from the thirties was either.

Yes Slater was good but what about John Brookes, Jim Bloomfield, I could go on and name many more.
It is impossible to pick one out of in my case over 50 years at GP It Is hard enough to pick the best team which was tried on here before,

This is impossible because there are too many variables involved and recent memories often cloud older ones.

Easier and more reasonable to pick a best player on a specific season.

My father watched Brentford as a schoolboy in the 30s and right through to the 70s until retiring to the Sussex coast. He reckons that Tommy Lawton, although past his best, was the greatest player he saw at GP.
I have some trouble chosing my favourite from when I first came here in '67. Probably a split decision between Gary Blissett and Jim McNichol.

The best player i have seen at brentford has to be Hermann though deano Holdsworth comes in a close second. on't forget Batsey he may not have been the best but he was brentford through and through and he played a blinder against liverpool. he looks better in a bees shirt though!!!

I go for John Docherty when he returned from Sheffield. At that time you thought you had a chance against anyone just because he was playing.

Although at the end of his career I consider Stanley Bowles is probably the best player I have seen at GP. I have had players that I perhaps favoured more but in skill and talent terms Stanley must be the best.

You beat me to it.
I was present during the interview and was a bit annoyed by his use of 'They' instead of 'We' when referring to Brentford.
And I quote....."I saw the 3rd division table on the last day and saw that THEY'D done it" (the championship).
He'd only left a few weeks previously!


Best player for me was Terry Hurlock. Thought of as just a hardman but he was the best passer I've seen at GP.

A lot of this depends on how old you were when certain players played for the Bees, because your opinion when you're, say 35, is based on completely different criteria and football knowledge than when you're an impressionable lad of 8. Having said that, Johnnie Brooks and Mel Scott were my heroes as a kid, while Stan Bowles and Jim McNichol clearly stand out from the 1980s when I was a lot more opinionated. Now that the Alzheimers is kicking in, I would have to go with Hermann -- one of the classiest players ever to grace GP.

Stan Bowles was a great player. However this did not always convert into good results for the team. He had a tendency to showboat when he could of been more positive.

Of the players I've seen at GP I'll vote for Andy Sinton.
We bought him at a bargain price, sold him for a pretty good price and inbetween he gave great service to the club. Considering the treatment some defenders gave him he had an incredible fitness record.
Also went on to play for England even thogh most of his games were when Graham Taylor was manager.

Comparing against different eras is impossible - how do you pick from an all international team in the early 40's. But using as a yardstick relative standing against your own team mates it must be Herman
