Best ever squad

What do people think is the best ever squad we have had for the division we were in?

I think this year (assuming everybody stays) is the best squad we have ever had.

In previous years I fancy the 1962-63 was the best ever but this year it is even better.

I am quietly confident of a first or second position this year.

These past few seasons (2014/15 to present) has seen the best squad of players since the pre-war period of 1932/33 to 1938/39. No doubting that.

If Banana is right that the drawbridge is being raised, then this is THE year to be a Bee. But for quality relative to the division, you’ll struggle ever to beat the ‘92 glory boys... Benstead, Statham, Hughton, Millen, Bates, Evans, Ratcliffe, Detzi, Marcus, Smillie, Deano, Bliss, Godfrey, Pitbull & co. in the THIRD division. Seriously:)

I fully agree with that but I am talking about relative to the division we were in.

To my mind our 1962-63 squad in Division 4 was better then our squad last year and the year before in the old division 2.

We led the old First Division for three months in that season.

In terms of this level of football we’d still get beat by the 2014/2015 team as it had more guile. Sorry!

1933/1935 the Bees were in the second tier!!

I wouldn’t put the 1962/63 side any higher than that of the 1957/58 side. Third tier at best. The 1991/92 side were better than them!

I would add that these last 10/11 seasons have been the best since 1929/1939. 80 to 90 years ago! Staggering.

Appreciate what both of you say about previous squads and agree with rebus about the special make-up of the play-off squad, but the truth is that the proof of the pudding is in the consumption. We don't yet know about the quality of this squad because we haven't seen how good the new boys are or how well they will fit in. With me, such judgements will wait til May.

Agreed. IF this squad stays together, it has the potential to be good, but with that comes expectation. There was expectation last year and we ended up disappointed. The 14\15 squad weren't expected to do that well and we were well under the radar then, with no pressure to make top 6. This squad will be expected by not just us, but much of the footballing world to do well. We can judge accurately in May.

This is our best squad since we went up. Honestly believe this team would rip the 2014/15 lot a new a***hole, and I loved that team. Football has moved on and you can’t get away with a Douglas- Diagouraga midfield anymore, no matter how much attacking talent you have.

Otherwise, 91/92 and anything else and I’m just guessing.

I think we were better all-round in 2017/18 than 2014/15, but our opponents took us much more seriously by then. In our first season up, a lot of teams underestimated us and paid the price.

What did they achieve in 2014/15 exactly? ;)

Though our away record was very impressive and probably contributed massively to the non achievement.

Whilst the 2014/5 first team was superb, the squad was extremely thin. The subs bench was frighteningly weak.
The current squad has far more depth, as of today, other than at left back position.

The pace of the game and the tactics have changed so much in the past five years. If we hold on to everyone I can't think of many 14/15 players who would get into our current first XI. None of the defence for sure, maybe Judge at his prime and Pritchard but he was only on loan.. wouldn't take Jota over Said or Ollie. 14/15 Andre Grey wouldn't displace NM either.

Potentially the best in my lifetime. Apparently, I was a ‘glory hunter’ in 1964 and the Champions squad was already breaking up.
Overall, 1992 was the best to date, though others have gone close, usually coming up short due to squad depth or selling a kingpin.
I recall ‘FT Index’ team set the Club record for games unbeaten (don’t know if it still stands.)

It’s always been about the entertainment though. Occasionally, some decades very occasionally, the entertainment and achievements coincide and it’s a very special magic.

We were nominated by some pundits and bookies as finishing in top 2 last year. Away performances and staff changes put pay to that. We have corrected hopefully the aspects we can just need the whole think to gel.

Overall quality has to be 2014/15 in my lifetime (I'm 39). This season's may well surpass that but impossible to say until we see how they perform on the pitch (and, indeed, who we can keep hold of!).

Relative to the division, the 91/92 vintage is a strong contender for obvious reasons. A slightly left-field choice could be the 94/95 season - we didn't really have any depth, but the first XI was decent and we absolutely battered some teams that year and would have gone up as runners-up but for the re-stacking of the leagues that year. Plus 48 league goals (I think!) from our front 2...is probably worthy of a shout on its own...

They didn't come close to the club record for league matches unbeaten (was set in 1999, 26 matches), but they did have a spell of one defeat in 26 matches. During that season they set the club record for most clean sheets kept in a Football League season, most goalscorers in a Football League match and tied with the club record for fewest Football League goals conceded in a season. They had the best defensive record in the Second Division as well, in addition to the best away record, best away attacking record and the highest away goal difference. Last but not least, they set a one-time record that season with being the only club in top four divisions to have two players score 20 or more Football League goals. Some of those stats testify to the decency of that team defensively, which tends to get overlooked with the FT Index banging them in up front!

Will be good to see some incoming.......... But my word that was a weak squad in terms of depth and experience.

We are talking about the squad. In the past, the squad was not as important as the first eleven. Nowadays it’s crucial. There are more stress injuries as the broken bones have decreased. Thick shins and ankles were more important and common in the past because boots and balls were much heavier. The sheep were pretty quick though.

Time yet. Need to see what the weekend (friday) brings. I am striving for positivity.
