and while we are on centre halves - Leon Townley (ex-Spurs: awful) and Joel Kitamarike (Chelsea loanee who had played in UEFA cup for them in Israel) - awful.

Currently being touted by Sutton United FC.

Biggest Flops

A couple spring to mind. Steve Jones always seemed to play well against us and then couldn't hit a barn door when he was with us. Steve Claridge too!

More recently, Cleveland Taylor anyone?

:sorted: good work Bob, agree with these. Any signing from non-league or a league below I wouldn't consider a flop, they were in that league for a reason. But when you sign someone from a higher division, you immediately expect something, therefore increasing their flopability.....

Biggest Flops

Murray Jones has got to the biggest mistake I can remember, if we'd replaced Holdsworth with anything half decent we would have had a better chance (obvoiusly) in staying up that season. I always thought Westley was pants didnt he cost us £100k?? Chris Moore was a disaster as well.

Biggest Flops

Joe Allon. I know some people on here liked him, but he was s*** imo, and never looked like the signing that was going to keep us up.

And I don't care how many goals he scored before anyone says it.

Haha, he was crap but somehow managed 28 goals in 58 games, would mind someone in the team with that strike rate now!!!!

Biggest Flops

without a doubt Terry Bloody Butcher, i won't forgive or forget the 7 nil against the Posh!!!

Biggest Flops

God i hate Terry Butcher, hated him before he became Bees boss and hate him even more now!!!!

Biggest Flops

I was so excited when we signed Shipperly, i'd always rated him.
But when i saw him play...oh, what a let-down!

This may be a bit controversial but Owusu, second time around.
He's never reached the heights he achieved when with us the first time around and just when he seemed to be hitting form along came Ghana and knackered him for us!

Who the hell let him play in that game, at that time of the season?? :nono:

Biggest Flops

He joined a long list of players that were great while on loan, but then dissappointed when we signed them permanantly.

Yes, that is a long list but look at the opposite side of that argument and you have 2 of the best players we've ever had.
Neil Smillie and Dean Holdsworth.

I didn't reckon Holdsworth much when he was on loan, maybe because he was from Watford but what a player he turned out to be.

Biggest Flops

And as also mentioned, Eddie May. I remember meeting a Hibs fan whilst on hols in Greece the summer we signed him. He told me we'd got a real diamond, describing him in a Bill Shankly manner "he's quick, he's tricky, he's strong, he's good in the air etc."

Sold a pup!

People forget his goal return. He was playing in a very poor Brentford side as well. Was way overpriced though and another player who had a run in with the Brentford fans.

Paddock again wasn't it?

Biggest Flops

Alan Whitehead: touted as a dominant centre half, but in fact abysmal. Along with Graham Wilkins he stopped us winning promotion in 82-3 when we had an excellent midfield and forward line.

Biggest Flops

andy myers. what about jamie fullarton

Seeing Myers mentioned reminded me of another Chelsea loanee who really couldn't be bothered to put any effort in when playing for us - Neil Clement. Absolute sh*te for us but loved by West Brom fans who he signed for afterwards.

Biggest Flops

he cost us promotion. were on a winning streak and he played 3 games and we lost all 3 if i recall correctly??

:dj:

Joe Allon. I know some people on here liked him, but he was s*** imo, and never looked like the signing that was going to keep us up.

I'm sure there must be half a dozen threads almost identical to this???

Again I find myself in a position where I must defend the mighty Joe Allon. So here are some Joe facts....

1) He WOULD have kept us up if Noddy had shown a bit of faith in him.

2) He was one of our most popular players at the time. I never knew ANYONE who didn't want him out there on the pitch. This 'he was crap' thing is a myth that has somehow grown over the years. I don't remember anyone thinking he was crap when he was with us - he was our hero.

3) Some people who claim Joe was crap, also idolise Lloyd Owusu! That is ridiculous. Lloyd wasn't fit to clean Joe's boots. He banged in a few goals one season, with the helpful service of probably the best 4th division team of all time. He has done f**k all since.

4) "He was s**t and I don't care how many goals he scored". Eh???

5) A Joe Allon would turn our current team in to a potentially award winning one.

6) Joe Allon is a legend. He's even in Dave's legend's book for chrissakes!

He had fun with the fans. He took the piss out of opposition players and supporters and the officials. He scored goals.

Biggest Flop - Ron Jeremy ;)

Mark peters

and that other bloke from Saints who Coppell got on loan. Didnt even last one match then was sent straight back. Adrian something he was a winger i believe.

Biggest Flops

Adrian Caceras-played a few more than one match and is apparently now a very good player in the australian A-laeague! (according to some aussie guys I met travelling this summer)

Jide Olugbodi anyone? Julian Charles? Theres quite a few

Biggest Flops

Also I see someone mentioned Scott Marshall-he was unlucky with injuries and actually looked a decent player on the few occasions he did play. Same goes for Oli Skullasson.

Well, I don't remember it like that at all. Thought he was rubbish at the time, and as I remember it the prevailing feeling was one of disappointment. He was our record signing and he wasn't good enough.

He seemed like a nice bloke, but he was slow, unfit and not very good. He was subbed as a sub in one game (deservedly so), and that is my abiding image of him.

Biggest Flops

Eddie May.....anyone!
Nope. Didn't think he was a bad player either. Like the mighty Joe, he was replacing a legend which is very hard to do. Unless of course you are referring to David's puppet manager, in which case yes!

Biggest Flops

Tom Finney for me was the worst signing ever. I'll never forget GP cheering when he as taken off totally useless.

That tells you more about Brentford fans than it does about Tom Finney. :(

I think he was actually sent off ! for a two footed tackle and the home crowd cheered as he trudged off . Total crap player :(

He put in a brutal challenge against a non-league side in the FA Cup (Addlestone & Weybridge or Windsor & Eton maybe?) and was deservedly booed off by everyone in the ground.

just like Norwich did on Saturday

Biggest Flops

Eddie May did'nt have the bottle. If I remember right, he made his debut at home to Chesterfield, playing on the left wing. After taking the piss out of the right back for the first 10 minutes the right back gat his own back an dtok him out with a bad tackle that got him booked (should have been sent off). May was carried off. Next time he appeared he jumped every time any opposition player went near him. Bottle gone and so was May,

To be a flop you had to have arrived here with some reputation which rules out the Ricky Reinas and Murray Jones's of this world as they were crap when they arrived. Ian Bolton and Paul Davis would top my list as they were expected to bring something to the side and failed horribly. How anyone can mention Joe Allon on this thread is beyond me, his goals came close to keeping us up surely?

If there were 1000 in 100 I would be 1000% with you. Absolutely spot on post! Geordie Joe is a legend, Murray Jones was on a hiding to nothing - absolute canon fodder and I can't quite remember who Ricky Reina is. Was he the one in Eastender's?

I can't think of anyone better than Ian Bolton and Paul Davis that meet the requirements this thread was intended for. Except possibly Shane Westley, who I may have mentioned earlier :sorted:.

Biggest Flops

my nomination: scott marshall - a former arsenal centre half. was apparently on £3k a week. then.

Biog

A centre half, Marshall showed early promise at Arsenal and was a Scotland Under 21 international tipeed for a very bright future. However he never came close to fulfiling that early potential and he eventually departed Highbury on a free transfer in the summer of 1998 for Southampton.

His career at the Saints was a nightmare and Marshall began to look a very limited defender who was out of his depth at the highest level. His loan move to Celtic in 1999 was greeted with a collective groan from the Celtic support who saw Marshall as a player simply not good enough for the Hoops.

So it proved. Marshall's only start for the Bhoys was in the disasterous 3-0 defeat to Rangers at Parkhead on May 2nd which saw the Ibrox club claim the league championship.

He was subsequently released by Southampton and joined Brentford in October 1999 for a fee of £250,000. He was injury prone at Brentford and he missed most of the 01/02 season. After battling his way back to fitness, he at last gained regular first team football making a total of 94 appearances for the Bees, scoring 7 goals.

Biggest Flops

Not how I remember him. Totally out of his depth at Brentford in Div 3, did OK at Darlington in Div 4 but no sort of replacemt for O'Mara.

Nailed on.

I have never forgotten Frank B's programme notes for Stan's debut which went along the lines 'don't expect too much of him because although he is fit he is not match fit'; my recollection, as the team withered away to relegation without (much of) a strike force, is that he never did become match fit . . . . . .
And he was carried off after about 60 minutes on his debut at GP as I remember.

It is also true, I think, as has been posted earlier, that the perception was that he would be as effective as Big John; and there was just no comparison and that is really why I remember what a poor investment he was.

Biggest Flops

Yes, but yet again, just like Geordie Joe and Scortish Eddie, another example of a player trying to replace a legend and on a hiding to nothing.

Did Stan We££ have two spells with us or did I dream that?

Not a dream - a bloody nightmare - one spell was one too many
