Board Election

"I would urge all those of you who have not yet renewed your membership or have not yet joined Bees United to do so before 25 August to make sure that you get your vote."

Pathetic! This means that friends and families of candidates will be joining or renewing for the poll.

Board Election

Bit suprised that the memberships have not been cut off to stop Banana's extended family rigging the vote! :D

I agree entirely.

I have raised an objection and I would expect other candidates to do the same.

Of course Chappers has already had both his friends join already :D

Just friend actually.

Board Election

I renewed just to vote in this election, anyone want to be my friend? :fishing:

Board Election

I thought I joined BU. But I have no idea if I did, all I have is a dent in my current account. I'd ask BU directly but i prefer to address them through the medium of the GPG and I can see Bees United browsing the thread.

Did I join?

Thanks

Also from the statement

"In line with Supporters Direct election guidance it will be a first past the post election i.e. in this case the candidate coming fourth with the least votes will not be elected."

That's interesting because I was at a BU Board Meeting when the policy was adopted that all votes in the future would be STV. Not that it makes much difference in this case.

Also in Supporters' Direct Model Rules for Elections it states

" 10. Polling results will be determined by ERS in line with the STV system as published."

Well the last Board Meeting i went to said it would be first past the post! lol

As you say not a great deal of difference in this case anyway. I would have expected new members not to be able to vote.

Anyway on with the election..........good luck all

Are you complaining about the wording because in this election where it is four candidates and three places there is only one way of doing it

As I said it doesn't make any difference in this particular case.

I am confused by the words in the BU statement: "In line with Supporters' Direct election guidance it will be a first past the post election" when the the the Supporters' Direct Model Rules for Election say "Polling results will be determined by ERS in line with the STV system as published".

I am also confused by being present at a Board Meeting in about March when it was agreed that all future election would be conducted using STV (proposed by Chris Scott if I remember correctly) and yet northants says that the Board agreed that this would be first past the post. I'm all confused.

Also I expect the Board "agreed" (probably in an inquorate meeting) that the election would be conducted first-past-the-post without knowing the number of candidates standing.

The last sentence in the BU statement has now changed from

""I would urge all those of you who have not yet renewed your membership or have not yet joined Bees United to do so before 25 August to make sure that you get your vote." (my emphasis)

to

"I would urge all those of you who have not yet renewed your membership to do so before 25 August to make sure that you get your vote."

I'm in the same position. I also renewed via Paypal.

If my voting forms don't turn up I'll be more than a bit .

Also from Supporters' Direct

"Trusts can either use preference voting, or straight first-past-the-post. The advantages of either can be debated. Many Trusts have used preference voting because it means that every member of the committee is there because at least 50% +1 of the members voted for every one of them - as opposed to the first-past the post system, where candidates could be elected on quite small percentages of the membership."

Can anyone find this "Supporters' Direct election guidance" that advocates first past the post????

Board Election

The above statement has been revised, so please review it.

Can you point-out where this guidance is please. Or is it from Joe Bourke :)

Looks as if this has been added

"New members who applied for membership prior to the deadline of 4th August and members who have renewed their memberships by 25th August 2006 will be eligible to vote."

Bet they cant wait to see you on board :D :D

Board Election

Actually i think they can.................is that why its going to take so long i wonder :fishing:  :D

I am sure the three that do get elected will either go two ways at the first board meeting :nono: :nono: or sell out and join the mob :love2: :puppy:

My only hope is that the three dont get isolated by being to anti BU or the status quo. As I believe this will limit the amount that can be achieved.

I'm no expert on voting systems (or on Supporter Direct guidance), but surely there must be a mechanism whereby you vote for your least favourite candidate (ie vote "4"), which seems more representative than a single vote for one individual (and thus ignores your other preferences). Ie, the same as STV but instead of knocking out the candidate with the least 1's you knock the one out with the most 4's.

Doubt it would make a huge difference, but you never know.

A '4' in your system is in effect not marking that person for election in this system.

The person with the most not marked for election will not get elected here so no difference

For what it's worth i will be in your first category. Its not a question of being anti BU I am far from that. It is for me at least, about asking pertinent relevant questions and getting relevant answers. I have no hidden agenda's and once my election statement is published anybody who wishes to can ask me any question they like..... feel free to ask now if you wish! I will say no more for now as i dont wish to turn this thread into an election campaign.

Fair enough its just that I am concerned that the newly elected trio may try to hard to change BU (probably for the better) and end up been seen as extremists by the existing BU board and good ideas views may be brushed aside and not considered. And you will end up :banghead: :banghead: then resigning.

Maybe I don't understand what they mean by "first past the post" - if it means every individual votes 1,2,3 then you are right. If it means people just vote 1, then I still think there's a difference between voting 1 and voting 4. Perhaps I'll leave this discussion until the voting forms come out and we'll see what members have to fill in.

I already :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: anyway so i hope to be able to change that!

It makes a difference.

Say Candidate 1 gets 1000 votes and Candidate 2 and 3 get 100 votes and Candidate 4 gets 99 votes.

In the first past the post system Candidates 1,2 and 3 would be elected.

In the STV system Candidate 1's votes would be redistributed meaning that 2,3 or 4 might get elected.

I've asked Bees United where Supporters' Direct dictate that First Past the Post should be used as I can only find exactly the opposite. No answer. Mind you this was an earlier exchange:

What does the word renew mean?

Renewed means renewing your membership of the Trust that you held prior to 1st July 2006 as I understand it, and mean it to imply, not new applications for memberships. If your family members held membership of the Trust prior to 1st July and want to renew by 25th August then fine they will be able to vote.

Excuse my interference

Doesn't permitting "all those who have renewed their memberships by August 25th." to vote in the election permit registering by friends and families of candidates in the interim.

I certainly will be.

Can the board confirm that anyone that has sent their subscription in by 25th August will be permitted to vote please?

Trevor

Trust all the other candidates got this too as they did get copied my earlier comments by BU

I am a life member and was sent a renewal letter ...... have been assured that the letters went out to everyone, lifemember or yearly member ( waste of money ...  ) so my membership is fine. Roll on the voting forms, be interesting to hear the "manifestos"

Good luck to all 4 of you :sorted:

Are they the ones where you can fill in the standing order form, vote in the election and then cancel the standing order once the votes are counted.

Send a couple of dozen along to my office.........lol

30 filled in already :sorted:

Lots of new "temporary" French members rushing to join with standing orders on Societe Generale.......they keep chanting "Vote For Bananas".......:)

The election method has been omitted from the statement. Has this changed or not?
