Hang on. What did John McEnroe say about Bob Booker? Or do I have to buy the book?Sorry, Les. Here’s the original post from the BBC Brentford page yesterday. I deleted it before anyone had replied because I remembered my dear old ma’s admonishment, “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.”
I’m still with John McEnroe on this.:
Yes, a poll, separate thread, is required. As well as those already mentioned may I also humbly submit nominations for Terry Hurlock, King Kev and Jota ITLM.Modern versions of a cult hero would be Sammy Saunders or Sergi. But they are surpassed by Gelson and Evans in these stakes. Think we need a poll?
I interviewed Bob for the programme about ten years back and he said Dave Webb gave him the youth team manager’s job as he heard in the game Bob was a great “club man”. The Ben Mee of the 1980s perhaps?!When Bob came back and played midfield in Phil Holders team he just watched the ball sail over his head all the time. Managers loved him because he always gave everything he had, even in training, occasionally the players trained on the pitch at GP and I can recall John Doc repeatedly praising him, “great attitude Bobby Booker“ etc etc. He would probably agree he wasn’t the most talented, but his attitude was spot on in a time where we had very few really talented players. Gary Roberts said in his interview in the dressing room after the six nil demolition of Newport County almost as an after thought, “oh, and Bobby Booker, set up all three goals for me, blinding”. I remember him coming in one day and he had a load of brand new overcoats that all the players were trying on, he had a few takers, no idea where they came from. Happy memories of him.
Ok - but you did say “any of the teams he played in.”I was thinking of Brentford teams only.
And before anyone wonders why I have suddenly piled in, I was following a post that was then deleted. I didn't suddenly decide to have a moan about Bob - thrown under the GPG bus!

A LEGEND after he left us ........ at Sheff Utd.
At Wembley watching them today
Looking tense

Of course he did. After his incredible 3 years there He’s an utter hero in Sheffield who will never have to buy a drink there for the rest of his life.f*** me what a week , the news of young master Pinnock was tough to take , and now Booker cheering on the full monty![]()
I guess that's why the love for him is replicated here for his Hull city hattrick , was he around 19yrs at the time ?Of course he did. After his incredible 3 years there He’s an utter hero in Sheffield who will never have to buy a drink there for the rest of his life.
And our pockets0898 121108 will forever be scarred in my memory…
I saw him in his second spell with us. I was only a young lad and thought he was a donkey. But clearly a club legend for many. So I guess he had a great first spell. ?![]()
I remember Bob being asked for his autograph at Griffin Park by a kid who handed him his program. Bob said have you got a pen and the kid said no to which Bob replied don’t worry I will get one and rushed off to the changing room.
Played brilliantly there in a 0-1 home defeat to FulhamNo doubt he became the butt of terrace humour in his early days and that stuck for a long time. I equally remember him being a team mainstay at defensive midfield under McLintock, scoring a great goal at home to Wigan.
The one position I don’t recall him playing much for us was centre back and Sheff Utd proved there was a proper player in there.
I have no idea tbh.But did he come back, or did he clear off with the programme?
