Calling Yorkshire Bees

I am a ST holder, and have recently retired from work. I used to work regularly in the Home Counties, so getting to most home matches was never a problem. I am now faced with travelling from Yorkshire for every game. Are their any Yorkshire Bees out there that I might team up with on a regular or occasional basis for matches at GP, be it car share or public transport? Perhaps what we really need is a West Yorkshire minibus?

Any thoughts, please respond here or PM me direct. Many thanks.

How many West Yorkshire/Yorkshire Bees are there and where from? My son and I live in Gilstead and Bingley respectively.

There is a BIAS group on Facebook for Bees fans In Yorkshire. It has quite a few members so you are not alone

I'm in Leeds but my attendance at home games is too sporadic to be a reliable travel partner.

Calling Yorkshire Bees

I’m also in Leeds, but like AB, rarely get to more than 1 or 2 home games a season.

Many thanks for responding. I think when you do go, you are both probably in a slightly better situation than I am as far as the public transport option is concerned. Driving, it is still a long drag!

What would be nice is to have a meet up for a televised Bees game which we aren’t going to get to. Being near Headingley means there’s usually one or two student Bees around in the pub but having a decent turnout of Bees would probably be fun.

I would certainly be up for that.

Are you lot going to Blackburn? Am driving north to Scotland on that day. Might see if I can get away with a long toilet stop in Lancashire.

I had sort of vowed never to go to Blackburn again after our last snowy trip there, a farce of a pitch and a Harlee own goal, plus having come to the conclusion when cycling through on holiday earlier that year that it was the worst place in Britain. But I might be tempted, particularly if I decide not to go to Villa after work on Wednesday.

I have. The town has improved a lot since the days when the Millers played at Millmoor, which was the grimmest league ground. The Magna kids science museum is also excellent if any Bees are bringing their kids to our game there and want to provide them with a bit of non-football entertainment before the match.

Whereas Blackburn was so grim that when my son and I cycled through it ( https://botzarelli.wordpress.com/2016/09/05/leeds-liverpool-canal-by-bike/ ) we were glad to get to Accrington. The only person who didn't look suicidal was the guy who'd found a quiet place to shoot up behind a tree near the bench we'd stopped to have a drink.

I will be there, along with a visiting Bee, venturing up from Aylesbury for the weekend. I have generally used a large pub just south of the ground on the same road as the ground. I don't recall any particular distinguishing features, except that a couple of years ago beer was £1.99 a pint, but had surged to an extortionate £2.25 on the last visit.

I'm North Yorks outside Skipton, spend all week in a car and on motorways so prefer to train it down for home games. Would be up for group discount cards, always jealous of London Bees mates who seem to travel up here for next to nothing for always yet I've yet pay less than £60 ish.

Like AB I'm only down for a few homes though

Calling Yorkshire Bees

I make it down a couple a games a season also so please add me to the list. No longer in York though about 25 miles south next to the M62 and equidistant between Goole and A19 junctions

Calling Yorkshire Bees

Despite my user name, I’m York based and train it down for as many home games as I can. Sadly not enough to make my season ticket a decent investment, but there you go. Do as many northern away games as I can, although have vowed never to go to Elland Rd again.

That's about the going rate from here on the odd occasion I have trained it. It would be nearer £40 if only you could book 3 months ahead and be sure Sky were not going to change the day/time. The late night trains out of Leeds on a Saturday night can be interesting!

Oh man, tell me about it. Got a slap off a drunk woman after Fulham away, when train got stuck and dumped us by Connonley.

Wouldn't mind but she was with her husband and two kids under 5.....at 11pm!!

Good luck with this initiative Keighley. I hope you get something off the ground here. It could be well worth it Yorkshire Bees, "We're on our way"

Sounds good to me, I’m in Horsforth so not far at all from Headingley.

Now that you have generated sufficient interest would it be worth enquiring about the cost of a mini bus ? I don't know whether the West Country lads hire one or have their own : maybe they could offer some advice on this.

I would assume Sheffield would be en route to GP so count me in. I have not managed to get to a home game for years but go to Northern aways when I can. I have a bit more time now that I have retired but with limited funds the cost of train and tube rules me out.

I know Braunton Bee is on holiday at the moment but I can tell you they hire the minibus. I think they did consider buying one but didn't progress that idea. Good luck with this venture.

I have already spoken to a local travel company about possible hire of a 16-seater complete with driver. I will post more about that shortly. I intended to try to make contact with Braunton Bee this weekend to hopefully pick his brains, but I see from 8corner that he is on holiday at present. I don't know whether they just hire the bus and drive it themselves, which would no doubt be much cheaper. I have no intention of offering to drive, so in that case would need volunteer(s).

I am working in Leeds, staying overnight in Headingley 3 nights a week and in The Oak most nights.

Save yourself a few quid and get nicer beer at Arcadia! The Oak is great for big matches though (unfortunately I didn't get in for any of the World Cup games - there was still a long queue almost as far as Red's 40 minutes in to the England v Belgium group stage game!).

If I'm not mistaken, I believe there is some sort of subsidy from the club for the WCBM......??.....

Sounds like a plan. I can't help with the driving either but it will be interesting to see what the costs would be. Apart from the high price of rail travel I have just received a leaflet from East midlands trains saying there will be replacement bus services at Derby until 7th October. Extensive rail works going on there apparently. I am desperate to get to GP at least once before the move to the Kew Camp so I will keep my fingers crossed that something can be sorted out.

Thanks, Joe, yes I thought so. We would need one or more volunteer drivers in that case, it is a bit beyond me taking on that responsibility now. To be worth hiring in a driver we would need to be sure the bus would be very nearly full.

If nothing comes of the minibus, I can probably help you get down to one or two games before we leave GP.

Yes, the club kindly have some sort of sponsorship arrangement with WCBM. It would be worth Keighley Bee having a chat with Braunton Bee for the details

Count me in on anything, Live in Otley, Leeds. Get to quite a few away games in the North, 3 or 4 home games in a season. Would be great to meet up to travel, train, minibus whatever. Dont mind taking a turn driving.

Wednesday, if you aren't going to Villa?

I'd be up for that. Haven't got ticket so would depend on being able to buy there. But I've been to Villa Park before so happy to avoid the midweek drive if there are others around up this way. Any suggestion of venue?

Over to you. Leeds probably more appealing than Keighley to most! Would be good if a few more could turn out.

Would be up for it, just had an op on my foot so not too mobile, tv in a Leeds pub would be ok

Was still in two minds until this morning when I decided I'd go. Then found I had to do a really tedious conference call about GDPR compared to the new Californian Consumer Privacy Act at 5pm so am not going. Sorry not to organise anything this time, but if anyone can get to Woodies on Otley Road I'll be there for the match!

Calling Yorkshire Bees

Too far for me. Can do White Hart, Harlington. ;) Seriously though, would usually be house-sitting for a cousin in Burley Woodhead this time of year. If I hadn't started a new job instead I would have joined you.

There'll be another opportunity for sure.

I will be coming down for the Arsenal game. Looking at trains leaving Leeds around 3pm and getting train back to Peterborough after game, staying
at Travelodge next to station, then train back Thursday morning.
If you time it right, trains are only about £40.

Calling Yorkshire Bees

Apologies for the recent silence, an unexpected period in hospital has very much taken the wind out of my sails.

Regarding a minibus for home games. The cheapest way would be to hire a 17-seater and drive ourselves, but for that we need a responsible and reliable driver to come forward. I am afraid I don't feel able to do this. The West Country minibus was started by an experienced HGV driver. We wouldn't necessarily need such an experienced driver, but it is not a case of anyone 'doing a bit', anyone who is going to drive even part way has to be there to show their documents when the vehicle is collected. Anyone who felt able to take this on would of course get free passage to games. If we ever got this off the ground, the likely cost per person, with a reasonably full bus, would be about the same as the West Country bus, £26 at present.

All the driver problems can easily be overcome by hiring a minibus with driver, but at a cost of course. A local firm has quoted me, to go from Keighley along the Aire Valley, into the centre of Leeds, and down the M1, with sensible pick-ups en route, £500 for a 16-seater. So a price somewhere mid-thirties if reasonably full. But who picks up the tab if 3 or 4 decide to drop out at the last moment?

At a price of say £35, it looks tempting to say a couple of people sharing a car would be cheaper, but that does not take into account wear and tear of the car, hours of tedious motorway driving, and not to mention the increasing difficulty of finding somewhere to park when you get there.

Please contribute on here if you have any thoughts, or PM me direct, particularly if you would be interested in the minibus option at that price.

If nothing else happens for the time being, I think it would be good idea if a few more of us got to know each other, and the obvious way would be a meet up, probably in Leeds (where are you, AB?), to see a televised game. A bit more car sharing might result, and that could eventually develop to the point where a minibus became viable. It seems a shame that so many Yorkshire Bees are only getting to one or two games a season, when the team are playing the best football of any of our lifetimes!

Sheffbee- I have not forgotten you, but it may be a few weeks before I contact you.
