Captaincy Candidates

When Pontus Jansson left, Norgaard was his obvious successor as captain, and Ivan Toney was always available to step up when needed. Prior to that there have always been obvious future captains ... Dalsgaard, Dean, etc

Whether Norgaard moves on or not at the end of the season, I don't see too many clear successors as captain?

Janelt, I guess, but how long does he remain a regular starter beyond this year? Could we see a relative newcomer like Collins or Van Den Berg as the next captain? There doesn't seem too many obvious leaders in the squad, although I accept a leader doesn't necessarily mean a shouter and bawler.

Seems the obvious candidate, regular starter but will need to be able to receive instructions from Thomas and communicate them rapidly to those on the pitch. He doesn’t seem backwards in coming forward.

Only if they are a natural leader who communicate, motivate their players and influence referees. Don’t give it to someone just because they’ve been playing for a long time

Ethan doesn’t strike me as captain material, he’s a bit too polite!

Jensen is certainly the one Thomas turns to but that’s probably because he knows Matti will immediately get his instructions and pass them on; not a guaranteed 90 minute starter, though. I suggested Collins as I think he’s vocal and probably will be able to interpret and communicate the instructions well by the end of this season. Personally, I like the captain to be central and a defender as they can see most of the game in front of them.

Janelt may slot into Norgaard's position, if he did go. Yesterday, he was shoehorned into LB to allow him to start. Depending on our blend of midfield and whether we try and play with a 10 or not, Jensen may alternate for space in the team with Damsgaard and Carvalho. Damsgaard should be starting most games, based on this season so far.

It's difficult - I am hoping our midfield will function much better when we have have two properly functioning wing backs.

Must admit I am looking at the squad and no one stands out as a natural leader when you compare to Toney, Pontus, Raya or Norgaard. Leaders have something about them, something that they are born with. They are not made as such, just naturally themselves. It's an area we will need to address imo.

Jensen is, slightly surprisingly, very vocal on the pitch. Not afraid to give teammates, nor the ref, an earful.
Collins would be my choice though, especially if he continues the season in the same vain he has started.
Vita would be a part of the "Leadership Group" as well, I assume

Regular reminder that Ethan Pinnock will still “only” be 33 during the final match of the 26/27 season (admittedly he does turns 34 a week after the season finishes). Ben Mee turns 35 this month.

Hard to see either this or next year being his last as a regular starter.

Ethan is Mr Cool - don’t think I’ve ever seen him lose his head with either the opposition or his own players? Quietly leads by example with his quality but I think the captaincy would be a burden for him.

If he has a good season I’m also thinking Collins would be prime candidate.

To be honest I hope it's not Jensen mainly because I think that midfield is the area needing the biggest upgrade to compete further up the table.
So if he's captain it probably means we've not upgraded the midfield in future windows.

If he could stay fit. He’s passionate, energetic and vocal and seemed to be Pontus’ protege. Unfortunately he is injury prone and hasn’t been able to own a regular spot in the starting eleven.

Could claim he has a bit of Ethan’s reserved nature however, his confidence has grown tremendously and clearly believes in his ability. Not quite as fierce a leader as Ivan granted.

He’s a class act just not sure he’s the best choice for designated captain. Personally I think we need captains throughout the side and in each department but my choice for the person with the armband would be someone who is a big enough, imposing character and presence who can motivate others as well as influence refs.
He may well be all of those but he always appears a cool, calm character rather than a grab the game or the oppo by the scruff of the neck type.
