No idea. But it's hardly a problem. When it happens to me I just pressed the "New Post" button. Probably less than a second delay.
That solution doesn't do what I want it to.
(Assuming you mean pressing the 'lightning flash' new post button.) Just shows me all threads that have had new posts since I last read them.

You press the "Jump to New" button once you enter the thread

Yeah but then you have to scroll back up and find out where you actually was ?

CBU's GPG FAQs

No you don't.
nothing better than someone listening to their customers user experience! :D

im a bloody mod and I am telling you it happens and its an utter ballache. doesn't matter if it shouldn't happen or you say it doesn't happen because my perception (and my reality) is it does happen! clearly I am not alone.

You must be confusing two issues. Because the one where you are not taken to the first unread post and, instead, are taken to the top of the thread clearly shows the "Jump to New" button as demonstrated by The Joker above.

If there's a different problem then please describe it in triplicate, with a fully document 4k video on at least 3 devices and we will get back to you when we feel like it. Or not at all.

When you enter a thread with the matrix deciding you should start from the first post, if you press "show latest post" it takes you to the most recent post. If there have been 10 posts since you last viewed the thread, it skips 9 to take you to the most recent post.

I've never really thought much about this and navigation now is learned behaviour for me but when a thread shows as unread, using the thread link always takes you to the first unread post whereas banana's suggestion, which I'm pretty certain I've never used, takes you to the latest post (i.e the last one). I can look into seeing if there is a better way.

Ah, I see what you mean. I've never considered this annoying and I guess it's because I can understand why it does this. If the forum software knew where your first unread post was it would have taken you there when you clicked the thread. It's doesn't so it takes you to the first post. You then click "Jump to New" which takes you to the only other place the forum software knows, which is the last post. So you are left to locate the first unread post yourself. This happens to me very rarely and I suspect that Les will be unable to find a solution other than to extend the "last read keep time" which may have other, unintended consequences (it doesn't mean we won't change it, and in fact we may do so). This won't eliminate the problem, it will only make it happen to you more infrequently (and when it does you will probably have to scroll back even futher).

However, in this situation, I suspect that (despite @Les Beeavinu's noble efforts to find a better way) we are stuck with it.

My simple head says "extend the time between the the restart". So if the system thinks "Mr Les hasn't read (x) thread for 2 weeks, let me take him to the first post" maybe changing that to 4 weeks or 8? No idea how feasible that actually is

For 100,000 users it's quite a bit and makes it slower to find your entry and costs more money to keep. Nothing is free, both in terms of time and money

It's currently 30 days. If someone hasn't read a thread for 30 days, they're not trying hard enough.

CBU's GPG FAQs

It is currently set as 30 days. Are you seeing this behaviour for posts more recent than 30 days? If so, we will have to ask the forum software people why this happens.

What about a button that says "first post today" rather than "latest post"?

Oh okay, I think (with me anyway) it is more the threads that haven't been posted on in 30+ days get bumped and then it's a faff finding out where I was if I don't catch it early enough. Makes more sense now, and doubt a "first post today" button (#170) would help too much as if you miss a day it rules that redundant

I just deliberately found a thread that I had not read for a while. "Jump to New" took me to the first unread post, not the last post. Stand by for more datapoints.

I pretty certain that "Jump to New" takes you to your first unread post. No idea why clicking on a thread doesn't immediately take you there however

Yep.
As covered/explained by @StevieSteve And @The Joker in posts #152 - 157 above......

@aslan Here's you explanation.

So "jump to new" takes you to the first unread post. Not the last post as you ascertain.

I am minded to not change anything as this is hardly a chore and only happens when you've not that particular thread for a month. So hardly very impacting.

Reading this again. If you press "show latest post" then it is correct that it takes you to the "most recent post" which will be the last post in the thread

If you press "Jump to New" then it takes you to the first new post.

So another issue that is an IAK? ?

Didn’t want to clog up the MotM thread with nerdy musings and the search function is well, you know…
What dictates the order in which usernames appear below the player who has been voted for?
It’s not alphabetical nor chronological, was Pinnock’s 100th vote last night but in the first 20ish names.

I assume it’s ordered by how much users have chipped in to Banana’s Yacht Fund

Isn’t it in the order of when the poster first subscribed to the GPG?

probably the order in which the software finds it in the database index. i.e. it's unsorted.

CBU's GPG FAQs

Looks like to me that it's on order of when the poster joined. It is that what banana means?
No. I mean the order in which the software finds it in the database. Which is definitely not the same as a list of users sorted by their joining date.
