Yestedays programme contained a match report of Brentfords game at Reading in 1978. The Headline was "Brentford go Clear in third place" and the report states
The report contained no condemnation, no shock horror and mentioned no threat of an equirey or of sanctions.
I didnt attend this game, my friends uncle had promised to take us both and as we waited at the Garden gate with our silk scarves tied around our wrists the sudden realisation that it was getting later and later and that he wasn't going to show hit home.
In those days there was usually trouble at matches, it was something else for the specatator to watch, probabaly hence the reporters words "that caught the eye" whereas today the ejection of a single supporter causes more of a stir.
"Indeed on several occassions, it was incidents on the terraces rather than the football, that caught the eye. Five times Brentford and Reading fans clashed violently behind the goal and on the side. Two simulataneous incidents in the second half saw both Brentford and Reading fans spill onto the pitch and briefly halt the game in an attepmt to avoid the flying fists and kicking feet."
