Charles Reep

Brentford noted as the first club of “Charles Reep” the godfather of footie analysis.
No mention of his role. Fascinating that it all started here!

It'll never work. You need to spend top money on players in their late 20's/early 30's who have been there and done it to have any chance of success. No ambition. Didn't want to go up. Warbs in! :sorted:

really enjoyed that article. Amazing that we were first to use data analysis in the ealry 1900s given our data-led reputation today.

Incredible person given that his research would have been based on attending actual matches as opposed to today's wall to wall TV coverage of games.

You need two nippy wingers and a big man/little man duo up front. Anyone knows that. f*** data analysis.

Bloody frequentist...be Bayesian (but not necessarily Ashley)

So we planted the seeds of data analysis at the club back in 1951, eh?

It took 70 years but it just goes to show that you Reep what you sow...

I know there are several fans of cartoonist David Squires around here.

You can see his take on Charles Reep's contribution to football history in his book "The Illustrated History of football: Hall of Fame"

You can see the intro and some of the cartoon here
Will share the rest from the book later if this is allowed, otherwise it's an excellent purchase.

What happened to the Bees data driven approach between Reep's departure and Benham's arrival then? The wilderness decades (almost century!) it seems ?

Butcher reintroduced it i recall, using the well regarded soccerbase website to make our signings. His data driven approach was excellent in unearthing new and more humiliating ways to lose each week
