Charlton Ref

My view was that the Ref was "poor" and actually commented after Clayton had got pulled down with the ref 5 yards away who waved play on that he favoured the big club.

What is strange is that looking at the stats Charlton only committed 3 yes 3 fouls and yet had 3 players booked wierd or what

Poor is an understatement compared to our man from Japan last week.

Charlton Ref

He is the xxxxxxxxx who refereed that horror game at Huddersfield in 2005 too!

2 of those were for the last minute foul committed on Hamer.

The lino on the New Road side was terrible aswell, especially in the first half.

I actually thought he was ok until the final 20 minutes - thought he used the advantage rule well.

Fed up with people week in week out blaming the referee for our own inadequacies...

Agree if he was pulling up for every foul it would have been pretty boring stop start game

Charlton Ref

We lost because we couldn't score again, nothing to do with the ref. :mad1:

Charlton Ref

I actually thought he was OK as well and kept the game flowing which was a big feature of it overall. Did however think he lost it a little in the last fifeteen mins when he didn't do anything about Charlton's time wasting although he did book one on them as a result I'm sure from the pressure of us fans which is not what a ref should do, he should act before that stage is reached. I was particularly impressed with the way he handled the melee in the last min when he stood back, allowed the situation to die down, consulted his linesman before deciding to book GA for dangerous play and the two Charlton guys for being arseholes and retaliating against what was an honest attempt by GA at a 50/50. He showed a calm authority when most pricks (Atwell) would have red cards flying around paper aeroplanes.

Fair comment- a few of us feared for the worst fir GA when he consulted the lino. I thought he did ok until the last few minutes but didn't give Alexander a decision all game. Morrison was all over him, arms round waist preventing him jumping and wrestling him to the floor for 90 minutes and not one foul against. That aside he was ok, not helped by a hopeless New road Lino. I also thought the Japanese ref
did ok as well last home game.

Any rationality I had about his officiating went out of the window when Alexander was getting the WWE treatment by a Charlton player which went unpunished and 15 seconds later Logan was on the deck after that nasty clash.

Charlton Ref

Absolutely correct, Donaldson poor again and IMO doesn't even look a threat, Alexander one shot on target which was well saved by Hamer, add up how many attempts the front two had on Saturday and you'll struggle to get into double figures between the two of them. Great all round performance from the rest of the side, but if we dont score we cant win games

Totally agree it was the inability to take chances but a few more freekicks and a few less offside decisions might have helped us maintain our impetus for a bit longer!

Charlton Ref

I thought the ref wasn't too bad. The lino's were very poor though.

Charlton Ref

I wonder if the fact that Donaldson was going to ground too easily made the ref suspicious of Alexander also, even though he was getting frequently fouled by Morrison

Donaldson has to meet the officials half way though and learn the offside rule... constantly two yards offside imho...

Charlton Ref

No the officials didn't cost us the match but I still think they were poor and I was in line for the majority of the decisions of the Lino on the New Rd/BA side and quite frankly his decisions were completely baffling. I'm a qualified ref and have run the line enough times at Junior level to know what offside is and on at least three occasions in the first half I could not see what he was flagging for.

Charlton Ref

To be fair all the officials were'nt at their best on Saturday, also when can you say that we have received good officials for any game, we're lucky to get that once a season. If Donaldson and Alexander were'nt getting the rub of the green, going down even easier is not likely to influence the ref to give fouls. I've lost count the number of times Iwhen 've witnessed opposing defenders getting fouls for the smallest misdemeanor or other infringements, but they are there to referee the game and can only give what they see. To me Donaldson and Alexander go to ground far too easily on occasions and this must stop cos they are not going to get free kicks everytime the're on the floor. Perhaps they think that a free shot on goal from a free kick will mask the fact that these two just aren't doing what they are paid to do and thats score goals

Charlton Ref

Don't think he changed the result, but for a while he did seem a bit too in thrall to Charlton's league position. Mind you he also gave us a few clangers - having penalised Logan every time he looked like he might be about to challenge for the ball in the first half he then let him get away with scything down their winger with only a throw-in. Towards the end we had two successive corners where it did look liek it came off our player (certainly the Charlton players surprise looked genuine). Also a bit puzzled why he (presumably) wouldn't let their physio go across the pitch to treat their bloke who'd run into the hoardings. We got a throw-in in the meantime and you could see we were a bit unsure whether we were OK to go on attacking.

Charlton Ref

The game should have gone on once their player was injured, it was off the pitch so the referee shouldn't blow his whistle to stop the game. That was good referee'ing even though some of the players did look in doubt especially Douglas.

But overall he wasn't great, did just 'leave' most of the decisions, and with the exception of the free-kick in front of their goal near the end of the half I felt we had very little decisions go our way when they should have. This pattern continued into the second half imo.

However, the result was not down to the referee, just 'one of those games'.

Although I thought he was fairly inept and didn't give us very much he also did not miss a 1 on 1 like GA did and then smack the ball over the bar from 6 yards after it came off the post (I passed that ball bouncing down the M4 at 5.30PM towards maidenhead.) So I deduce it is not his fault we lost.

I think he handled the melee at the the end like someone who didn't have a clue what had happened rather someone who stood back and let it calm down. GA was entitled to go for it but did go in like a man frustrated and it was a foul. If the ref had any ability he would have given GA the yellow then cracked on with the game. Instead we had to wait 4 minutes as he consulted the hopeless linesman, picked the bones out of something he did not see and then just booked 1 from each side.... the ultimate reaction of a person who doesn't have a clue what he is doing IMO.

Pedant Alert!

The ref booked GA and 2 Charlton players after consulting his assistant...

Yep. He booked the 2 Charlton players first.
