Chris Mepham

Just signed 5 year deal and joins 1st team squad.

Chris Mepham

congrats Meps!

gotta be worth a start tomorrow - need to see what he's made of

Chris Mepham

Well done Chris, well done KO'C and well done to the superb B-team squad. This strategy for developing talent for our future is proving to be very successful.

It's a tough one. I'd normally agree (and was arguing for this previously as I think he deserves more of a shot).
However.....with our team struggling to get three points on the board....I'm wondering if it's worth using this as an extra game with our current first choice team together (and then resting people in DS's mandatory sub window ) to build up understanding/consistency etc.

Chris Mepham

It certainly a statement from the Club about the belief in "Meps"!

Chris Mepham

5 years is some deal.....look forward to seeing him play

Chris Mepham

Captain for the first Lionel Road game?

Chris Mepham

Congrats on the deal Meps and welcome to the first team squad.

Chris Mepham

Should get a decent price for him in January now!!!

Chris Mepham

Wow, 5 years is some statement from the club. Obviously believe he can go far.. wouldn't be surprised to see him start tomorrow night.. well done Chris!

Chris Mepham

A five year contract for someone who's never played a single minute's league football is incredible.

Chris Mepham

I am staggered at this announcement. A five year contract!

The club must think he is the best player ever to come through the youth system. Really hope they prove to be correct.

Good luck Chris, you have an aweful lot to live up to.

Chris Mepham

Well done Chris Mepham

Hopefully this will demonstrate to B Team squad members that there is quite clearly a path to the first team if you are good enough and apply yourself and good things can happen

Fully agree with you, what a statement of intent, this is a clear demonstration that with the B squad you can progress up the ladder, one of the best moves we made was by closing the Academy, Chris shows the way for the rest of them, this could be exciting times ahead for some of the lads, well done Chris, and lets not forget KOc in all this, who's hard work with the B team is paying off, and who knows, a 1st team manager for the future.

Kev O'Connor will be a future Brentford manager no doubt.

We sign yet another foreigner. (Tongue firmly in cheek before I get 20 quotes)

Wonder if he has any Danish genes in him?:fishing:

Chris Mepham

Seeing him play tonight I don't think he has the physique required to play at this level yet.

Chris Mepham

.............silly penalty to give away...............

Chris Mepham

Very silly but I guess, to coin a well known phrase, he will learn from it. Got the makings of a very good player but a tough night for him.

Chris Mepham

From reading the GPG (and having not seen him play) I had got the impression this lad was pushing for a spot in the first team. No chance on the basis of tonight, perhaps a harsh situation to judge him on but not sure he is anywhere near the first team and needs a productive stint on loan first.

Chris Mepham

Did not have a good game. Wrong decisions, out paces, caught napping with a quick throw in. Young lad but way off the level required based on this this one performance. I hope the 5 year was not a knee jerk to the Mawson fiasco.

Chris Mepham

Blimey give the lad a chance.

Chris Mepham

I thought he had a good game but I spent most of the second half with my head in my hands so I could well have missed some mistakes.

Aye. He was given a tough game today. Limited Norwich quite well first half, bar the penalty. Still think he'll become a bloody good defender. Doesn't look scared of receiving the ball either.

I think the problem was more with what was happening in front of him. Not going to bother going into mistakes for goals because we all know how that ends.

Chris Mepham

He was ok but the penalty was just stupidly unnecessary.

Chris Mepham

Tough game.. but he didn't shirk away from challenges and put his head to everything especially in the 2nd half... hope he learns from this and kicks on..

If your knee jerks 4 years after an event, you have dead knees....

Chris Mepham

Bad start, got better and started taking responsibility for the ball from other players

Don't write him off yet, he is young

Chris Mepham

He's only young, but that was the most unnecessary penalty to give away, the ball was rolling out for a goal kick so why did he feel the need to push their player over?

Did he really push him over? Contact looked very minimal and their striker made a massive meal of it.

Overall I thought he looked very good on the ball, got beat a couple of times but he was left very exposed.

Chris Mepham

It was a definite penalty. Very very stupid. From my view he pulled the guys shoulder throwing him off balance. Ref was perfectly placed. No complaints from me at all and I was pretty close

Chris Mepham

What struck me as very wrong was that their player was running to nowhere and Mepham was keeping up with him, so there was no clear danger. Instead of just staying with him, Mepham seems to make a decision to hesitate, maybe to position better between him and the goal, then put his hand on him. It was a clear penalty that was totally unnecessary, just poor decision-making.

Chris Mepham

It was a stonewall penalty, he just yanked him back after their player had got past him. Players do that sometimes but do it in a very subtle way with a limited impact, he just yanked him back and the ref had no choice.

He got better as the match went on a bit though, he is still young and hasn't played at this level so he will learn. 5 years is a long time to learn and he doesn't have to be the finished article already.

Chris Mepham

On the penalty: He was left isolated by the other defenders. And it's never a free kick outside of the box. However, these things happen and he's probably not used to players going down like their striker did. He's also probably not used to having so little time to make decisions. Good learning curve.

Reminds me a lot of Harlee Dean (who made much worse mistakes at this level).

Chris Mepham

You can see he is a good player with all of the right attributes. Decent touch, fairly quick, good at bringing the ball out, and despite giving away the (soft) penalty looked confident enough afterwards - it was though a bit of baptism of fire. He did make some poor decisions and was caught napping a couple of times. He still has a lot to learn and I'd say is still some way of the first team ... I guess the 5 year contract reflects that. He looks prime for loan into League 1 or 2 at the moment but I have every confidence that in a couple of years time he'll be in our 1st team.
