Classic sporting quotes

There must be a thread for them somewhere but I heard about one yesterday that I think is top drawer.

"And let that be a lesson to you all. Nobody beats Vitas Gerulaitis 17 times in a row."

– after beating Jimmy Connors at the January 1979 Masters. Gerulaitis had lost their previous 16 matches.

Top stuff from the 70/80s tennis man with Michael Bolton hair, then I read how he tragically died and how young he was!:(

Anyway a David Coleman one was "at 100 metres was when he opened his legs and showed us his class" something like that anyway

I spent most of my money on wine, women and fast cars. The rest I wasted........or something very similar

There's another one which may be an urban myth but it's after he retired.

He was shacked up in a London hotel with Marjorie Wallace who was a yank and recent winner of Miss World that he'd either been a judge at or been introduced to her at. (She was later sacked but I forget why) Anyway he ordered room service and didn't answer the door when food and champagne finally turned up. Waiter eventually let himself in and found Best half awake but drunk curled up on top of the bed next to sleeping naked Miss World. The story goes that teh room was littered with empty champagne bottles, thousands of pounds in various notes and hundreds of poker chips everywhere as as they'd been up all night at the casino and won a few bob.

Best says he woke up and signed for the tab, exchanged a few words with the waiter, gave him a big tip and then heard the bloke mutter as he left the room, "So sad, where did it all go wrong"

I seem to remember that is the original Colemanball. The only problem was that it may have been Ron Pickering who said it.

Wasn't something like "He comes Juanterena off the bend, opening his legs, showing his class" as he won the 400m by some considerable distance

Still cricket:

'And Illingworth is relieving himself at the Pavilion end'

Shane Warne was bowling to Inzamam Al Haq (or possibly another rotund player) who was basically stone-walling everything with ease. Keeper Healy called out: "We've got to get this bastard to leave his crease. Someone put a Mars bar just short of a length.'

i always like the danny blanchflower quote. wish more people would play to its principles:

"The great fallacy is that the game is first and last about winning. It is nothing of the kind. The game is about glory, it is about doing things in style and with a flourish, about going out and beating the other lot, not waiting for them to die of boredom."

Danny was a great sporting philosopher who also advocated taking pleasure from one's opponent's play.
In the 1958 World Cup Finals, the only time the four home nations have all been in attendance, he announced Norn Iron's new strategy of equalising before the opposition had scored.:)

This one sums up why I (and hopefully a lot of us) cannot get enough of the Bees

"The pleasure of rooting for Goliath is that you can expect to win. The pleasure of rooting for David is that, while you don't know what to expect, you stand at least a chance of being inspired."
