Come back kids

As was mentioned in the Odubajo thread, they say "never go back". I was trying to remember which players did come back and whether they did well or not (at least by the standards of when they were here before). Off the top of my head:

Marcus Gayle - fair
Lloyd Owusu - good
Nicky Forster - fair
John Docherty - very good
Bob Booker - good
Paul Priddy - very good
Tony Sealy - not good

I'm ignoring people like Detzi Kruszinzki and Dean Holdsworth as they to all intents and purposes came straight here after a loan spell.

Any others and comments?

Getting Owusu back was worth it just for the positive energy when he returned to the pitch.... shame he got injured...

Of course. How could I forget about them. Fully agree: Smillie was better than he had been and Sweetzer was one of my biggest disappointments.

With maybe the exception of Docherty nobody came back a better player for us than in their previous spell ( excluding loan players), surely that is the main point?

Yes 3 times a player, then as a manager, finally as assistant manager (under McLintock?). His time as manager wasn't good and we were really in the mire when Dodgin joined - though he was working with minimal resources

I've never been a fan of the old adage: "You should never go back".

So long as you left on good terms and for good reasons, and you're coming back for good reasons as well, then why not?

The problem comes when you do a Harley "Ten Times Better" Dean move, or a Jota "I'll only leave BFC for the Prem" move: you can't expect ever to be welcomed back into the nest after you shat in it when you left.

But if eg Maxim Colin was interested in coming back, we needed a RB and the terms were right, I'd happily have him back.

He played in 41 matches last year with 3,653 minutes of game time
The year before he played 40 matches with 3,486 minutes of game time.

He's hardly McE or MacLeod.

Last year perhaps. For us I'd say, off the top of my head with out checking, he made 2 games out of 4. 50% availability is not good enough imho. All muscle problems iirc.

Holdsworth's loan spell was a year before he signed. He should definitely be on the list.

Richard Key, Tony Sealy, Graham Benstead, Gerry Peyton, Carl Hutchings...

Richard Key had several spells with us by virtue of a technicality.

In 1985/86 he was on a non contract registration for us and Swindon needed a goalkeeper for thier league cup games so we agreed to loan him.

As you can’t loan “non contract” players to other clubs in the same league, we would cancel his registration, let him join Swindon for two days or so and then he would subsequently re-join us.

What's a "non contract registration"? Is it similar to Sunday League registration? If so, what is the point of it?

Pretty sure we have done this with players who played one game for us. Brian Caterer came from Chesham for one game when we were short of CBs. Bob Wilson played one game on loan from Feltham (?) and scored the only goal against Port Vale. Presume it's to fulfil FL rules or cover insurance.

There's quite a lot in recent years ie Lewis Grabban.

Lots if you count loans ... Dale Bennett, Adam Thompson, etc

They were both amateurs and we did not enter into an arrangement with another club in the same league.

To answer @Banana point - yes it is similar to a Sunday league registration. It can be cancelled by either party with seven days notice.

The point of it is that all players must be registered to play.

I'd argue that Ben Hamer was better in his third spell than in his previous two stints. Not quite so good fourth time, though!

He played more than you think.
He'll played just under half the games in the first year, as one injury ruled him out for about half the season. The next season for us he played most games with only minor niggles.
It's all a bit moot anyway as we're probably not going to give him back with Dalsgaard here ;)

The pre-season following our Rosenior/Fitzgerald relegation, when our signings were pretty desperate, up pitched Paul Smith on trial. Can't recall if he ever made it as far as playing in a pre-season game, so a very short-lived second spell, if it can be classed as one. Mentioned more for the memory of walking away from the training ground wondering how much lower we would sink. The answer came when Dearden, having been unveiled as the new GK coach the same day, promptly buggered off to Millwall about a week later. Two candidates for worst ever returns?

Thought of two, Rowan Vine and David Partridge - didn't even make the bench in their second spells! Not that Partridge was any good in his first spell though.
