Just watching the Boxing Day test. Opening over and the Aussie batsman plays a big leave - shoulders arms - bat high in the air etc. Ball comes back off the seam and hits the batsman hard and square in the box.

Aussie commentator: "They say that there are two types of leaves - a good one and a bad one - and that was a bad one" :D

It's raining goals at Griffin Park.

Does that count?

I remember taping the Arsenal v Sheffield United replay in the FA Cup fifth round in 2005, the same night as our replay with Southampton. I think we were all flummoxed why the BBC didn't pick our game and I remember with the Arsenal game at 0-0 at HT, Lineker said, "we should've been at Griffin Park, they're flying along there".

Sat in a car parked up in Salford one Saturday, many moons ago, fearing a carjacking as you do .... West Ham are the commentary game on the radio and Julian Dicks fired a shot just past the post.

"Dicks inches wide" yelled an overexcited commentator.

Commentary Gems

The question is.............Was Dicks calm and composed or was he also over excited and how did that affect his attempt on goal?

If we're playing that game then "The bowler's Holding, the batsman's Willey"

"And the line-up for the final of the women's 400 metres hurdles includes three Russians, two East Germans, a Pole, a Swede and a Frenchman"

Jack Charlton tells a lovely story about his time as a co commentator after he'd retired as Ireland Manager. Famous Irish version of John Motson who is asking Jack for his view on a glaring Irish miss from a set piece.
As Jack is offering his opinion, his colleague interrupts" Sorry Jack they're breaking quickly, the forward has it, he shoots oh feck !"

Maybe there is also a third type of leave: incomprehensible.

Love the expressions on Adam Gilchrist and Damien Fleming in the commentary box.

"Look at his face, just look at his face"!

Wasn't that about Franny Lee?

I liked the phrase "He milks the applause he so richly deserves" which was about Tony Currie after an effortless curled shot into the top corner for Leeds I seem to recall. Never knew why Arsenal didn't buy him when on their doorstep at Watford, he may have lacked pace but a superb footballer.

"The goalscorer was Rush, but Dalglish was the creator supreme"

My mate Bristol Steve, who supports Bristol City, used to endlessly quote a line of extremely excitable Tony Gubba commentary when Bristol City knocked Liverpool out of the FA cup in the early 90's,and their Polish striker had the game of is life.

"They say Jackie Jackanowski is from a different country, well today he's playing football like he's from a different planet"!!

"Thomas, charging throught the midfield, its up for grabs now, THOOOOOOMMMAASSSSSSSSSS!"

Liverpool v Arsenal 1989, the late, great, Brian Moore.

I like the way wingers keep "dropping their shoulders" all over the pitch.

An old one in similar circumstances. It happened on the 4th ball of an over. There was a break for treatment then commentary resumed with "the batsman's OK now. 2 balls left"

You could hear men and boys shouting in joy all over our estate in Ruislip when that one went in and its a hotbed of Bees and RaRas. So I guess that shows how much we all didn't want Liverpool to win the league!
