Computer help pretty please

Sorry if this the wrong place but

I am not very computer savvy but the last 15 years I have used Firefox no problems

1st thing today used it as normal then 2 hours later went to go on internet sign flashes up can't connect to XPCOM

Now for some unknown reason I also have Edge, Internet Explorer and Chrome on the machine and they all work

so can anyone tell me please why Firefox won't

Computer help pretty please

If you Google XPCOM, there are lots of hits on this problem and how to fix it. A common theme is the possibility of a virus.

Best to save bookmarks then uninstall Firefox . Use Revo uninstaller and it will remove everything. Then reinstall and import bookmarks.

This doesn't involve GPG directly, but didn't know where to post this (similar to TOMOGP above).

Recently had an Email purporting to invite me to renew our TV Licence with a box to click on to undertake this task. A warning was received from Norton that they couldn't prove the originator was genuine. As the renewal isn't due until the end of June, I thought it was a bit early.

As a precaution, I today googled NTVLRO renewal and found the correct site. There were warnings on there about fraudulent Emails, and the implication that clicking the box (on the Email I received) would mean my banking and other details would be compromised to all and sundry.

This is just to remind everyone to be very careful about clicking boxes on Emails. It's often mentioned, but if I hadn't had my "timeline" wits about me, then I could easily have had details in fraudsters hands.

Picked up a copy of next week's Radio Times today. Just read on the letters page some one else putting out the same warning, having obviously had a similar Email to the one I received.

This is just regular phishing. Gmail does a really good job at filtering out nasty stuff like this. So it might be worth moving if you are on some other email provider.....

Have Gmail on phone, but this came in on BT Internet our main Email provider. However, as I said Norton, which we've got installed on our desk top, warned me against proceeding.

Use Gmail to collect your mail from BT and have it all in one place. Gmail then filters all the crap out of your BT mail too.

Doesn't look like you can get any Fibre to cabinet services so you would be lucky to get 11mbps. The connectivity is at the exchange end, but I have checked BT, Sky, Vodafone and Talktalk and they do not predict anything greater than 8mbps. (I guessed your house number, but don't imagine it would make a lot of difference).

The only option is a 4G/5G service like Vodafone Gigacube or 4GEE

Does anyone know if PC World Know How do a collect and repair service, seeing as all their stores are closed at the moment?

If my experience of them is anything to go by they never did Know How for anything.

THanks Will it be ok to work from home with such a restricted service, is it any better if i plug an ethernet into the rooter

second question ,what is gigacube? How much does it cost? What does it do

some else mentioned a hot spot??

It does depend what you are doing when working from home but for emails, conferences (maybe without video) you should be fine.

An ethernet cable would give you the maximum guaranteed speed the router can do. Maximum distance is 100m

Using WiFi you are subject to environmental factors like distance, walls and interference. So it does depend on the structure of your building.

A hotspot is using a mobile phone with a 4g data contract and sharing that with your other devices, thus creating a WiFi network without a router.

The gigacube is Vodafones dedicated device the does the same thing. Basically a router with a 4g SIM card in. All the mobile network providers have a service like that so that would depend on who has the best coverage in your area.

This is Vodafones offer

https://www.vodafone.co.uk/gigacube/

Three have the best value as it unlimited but coverage is generally poor.

You should get around 40mbps on 4g.

Yes should be, what would you be doing when connected to the FortiClient VPN?

SAP R/3 and IBP on excel

So if that works ok then presumably don't need that gigacube thing unless I want to cast Netlix and stuff?

I am posting this more in hope than expectation.

I access the GPG mainly on an old tablet (Samsung S3) and, since the GPG server was updated a few months ago, I have been having problems with it. Every few minutes, it comes up with a message "Your connection is not private" with various other warnings. I consulted my granddaughter, who advised me to tap "Advanced" and then "Proceed to griffinpark.org (unsafe)", which I do and it then lets me in. I don't use the tablet for online banking or much else and so there are no passwords to be stolen.

That in itself is a nuisance. However, if I want to reply to a post, I often find that it won't let me and insists that I either leave the site or refresh the page. I do the latter, but have to then retype my post in full. Is there a solution to this? (I am currently accessing the GPG via my desktop pc, which works ok, but which I only switch on for a few hours every afternoon and so isn't really a solution.)

I am not exactly a technophobe, but please don't blind me with science. Many thanks.

I'd clear the history, the cache and delete the bookmark on your PAD and try to log back in. That should sort it out using the link above; https://griffinpark.org

If my experience of them is anything to go by they never did Know How for anything.

Spent an hour on hold last Saturday, I then got the ring tone, only to be cut off.

Tried again today, on hold again for the best part of an hour, then finally got to speak to someone.

Lap Top being picked up Monday and hopefully getting it back Saturday.

Update. I got an unlimited data wifi box from vodafone £35 up front and £28 a month.

It has worked like a dream, streamed Netflix and Amazon Prime no problem. Haven't bothered with sky, and best of all work are paying for the set up and first two months till we go back in the office as I told them Sky can't come out till then. Won't bother with Sky as this works well and saves me a fortune.

Haven't had a single problem with the WFH either.

Thanks for your advice.

Why does my Freesports player run perfectly well on my laptop yet my BT player stutters at times?

BT does that on my laptop also but, rather than running off the battery, I plug it into a mains socket and hey presto no buffering, so maybe it's a power thing. Also, when I was first fathoming what to do, I deleted my history first and that also helped .... but that may not be an absolute necessity. Hope this helps.
