Firstly stop being so patronising. I’m not and never will be your “pal” - and whilst he has played midfield most of his teams use him out wide as do Burnley. That’s not to say he isn’t a good player.

Firstly grow up, secondly never say never pal

I do think we’ll be fine. There’s enough quality in the squad, and in TF we have an excellent manager who can adapt the team to different situations. Plus thankfully there is some right dross in the league this year.

I do think it’s fair to start questioning the recruitment since we came up. As others have said our strongest XI has 7 of our Championship team in it, and that would be 8 had we not sold Raya. That’s a poor record 5 transfer windows into being a PL team.

First, credit has to be due for the phenomenal work the recruitment team did in the Championship, and to those players who have improved hugely.

But, despite the increased riches we can offer we seem to really struggle to attract anyone who can improve on that team. Given we originally attracted that team while in the Championship, that does seem barmy.

Im not calling for anyone’s heads - still think Phil Giles is among the best DoFs in the country and we’re very lucky to have him - but the hit rate since promotion rightly needs to be questioned.

Didn’t think id say this after last season but If we finish 17th this season id be happy TBH

Brentford are 14/1 to be relegated on Skybet. If you’re that worried, I’d lump on if I were you.
I don’t think we will be but might be unconformably closer than anticipated. Hopefully not.

This is just another pointless thread.

We should not be the kind of club or fan base that turns around after every bad game and screech about signing more players to make it all better.
We weren't actively looking for a creative midfielder though, otherwise we would have signed one!

Dewsbury Hall should have been a target of ours with Leicester's relegation, no chance now.
Would have been a great signing but do you think he would have joined? I think he'd get paid more at Leicester and will see Leicester as a bigger club than Brentford despite the league difference. I think this is what we're up against unfortunately.

We were actively looking for a pacy attacker… but didn’t sign one.

We’re a small club and, while we may be able to pay decent transfer fees, we’re competing against more established ‘Top 10’ Premier League clubs and top clubs in other European leagues. We’re never going to be top payers, so there’ll be many clubs below us that can make more lucrative salary propositions as well. There’s not going to be a lot of players that both fit our specific need and fit our ability to attract them.

Ultimately, it’s another duplicate thread.

For some time the club has brought in players with potential who see joining Bees and getting good coaching as a step forward. If we want to improve on last season's effort and emulate clubs like Brighton we need to attract more established players but, from their point of view, this is a small club which might not be able to offer the money they think they can get. Our ground is very nearly half the size of Brighton's so nothing is going to change soon.

They were 18/1 before the Everton defeat & it did cross my mind ?

Ground size has little or nothing to do with it.
Our income is in the main from TV money and transfers.
From a selling point of view the top 8 clubs are the ones with the money to buy the likes of Toney and Raya that we want to be dealing with.
Buying though is a different matter. Foreign players will in many cases not even have heard of us which doesn’t help recruitment and in my opinion ( I may be talking rubbish!)! was one of the problems in the window. Or at least even if they can find Brentford on Google Maps they’re no attracted to us. Personally think there’s a lot of Championship players who we could poach, we had enough of our own that we lost that way. Also the top clubs have players who can’t get into their squad if 25, that we could offer a regular place to.

I think with Yarmolyuk, Brierley, Olakigbe and Kim we have some great potential on the fringe of the first team. With the injuries we have maybe we need to take some chances. I'd rather see these yoing guys play than Ghoddos, Onyeka and other journeymen.

I think we have a team mostly made up of ok players , what makes us " good " are the likes of Ivan , Raya , Rico , Bryan maybe Jensen , and it could also be Schade .Take these players out and I think we'll struggle

You forgot Norgaard in there Big Bee

Creative midfielder

I didnt , he's been out of sorts recently .,plus would any of the top 6 clubs want him ? Raya's gone to one , Ivan's the next .....................
He’s up there with one of the best CDMs on his day I think he’s still got a night knock that won’t go away, we all know when he plays well the whole team does

Agree ground size largely irrelevant re finance but perception is a powerful force. What do you think if you consider, as a player, Brentford or Everton (apart from the obvious)?

Would love to know if Yarmo is ready to take a shot as the 3rd midfielder. We have seen how Trevitt is pulling up all the trees down on loan at Exeter so we will have this option for next year,. What we need is someone on loan in January. I don't care if its a senior pro in their 30s. Someone who can do what Eriksen did and elevate the midfield to be better.

Personally I'm more thinking we will be looking for another full / wing back like Nilton from Porto B in January

Trevitt went off in 46th min so no doubt another midfielder injured

The issue for me is defensively as we are shipping so many goals.tightening that up is the first priority

That’s a very narrow interpretation.

Phil has said repeatedly that we have to target to recruit players to improve the squad, not just bulk it up. None of us know which players we actually bid for (except Johnson, very publicly) in what positions. We ended up padding the squad with Ghoddos and Maupay, neither of whom, with due respect to them, actually improve us, then we’ve been hit with injuries that could not’ve been predicted.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing.
No hindsight in knowing we have not had a dedicated left back cover for Rico for the last 2/3 years, playing players out of position is
not very Premier League IMO.

Well now we only have Jensen, that's my point!
Jensen who a large portion of our fanbase thought was not up to much in 2 Championship seasons (our best in nearly 30 years!) and well off the needed quality in our first PL season. But now almost nobody sees him as anything but an automatic starter and acknowledges how good a player for us he is. On that metric even our 21-22 signings haven’t had the same time to hit their level it took him even if we ignore the time some have spent injured. Maybe this season will see us not hit last season’s heights but perhaps we could trust our folks’ belief in the PL recruits. Who knows, they might be right and next season we have a very strong team of players hitting their top levels joined by a next tier set of buys financed by Raya and Toney money and our FFP headroom from not having gone near to making a loss while being competitive in the PL. The Mudryk and Johnson sagas show we are looking to recruit next time’s set of immediate starters at £40m+ and the impact of the £20m players most have bought has not been great or immediate. Including us. There are at least half a dozen clubs who could only dream of that balance between PL success and financial sustainability.

Agree Thompson left a while ago now and no effort to bring in a left back all summer apart from a late bid for wellington one left back is never going to be enough.

Anyone with half a football brain could see he was/is a class act!

Alex Scott went for 20 million for Brizze to boremuff but he's injured anyways :banghead:

When we signed Hickey, lots of people on here said he was a left back being played out of a position as a right back.

Creative midfielder

Agree there was no link rumour at all all summer only wingers …

The real areas we needed were an attacking midfielder and a CF and now it shows so much. They have all these tools and spent 3 months chasing Johnson who was never coming here.

He's an odd one, looks more left footed but certainly a lot better at RB.

Would add Pinnock and Norgaard to that list and remove Schade.

Agreed attacker and attacking mid and a back up left back as we didn’t replace Thompson … that was what annoyed me also he never wanted to come to us bidding 45 mil when we could of focused on a midfielder.

We have KLP, Schade, Mbeumo why did we spent the whole summer trying to get another 9one. Would have been far happier if we had spent time getting a player like Dewsbury Hall at Leicester. Plus a loan Striker from somewhere.
