The late 70's were the worst of times for aggro for me. First incident I ever recall on the road was on the way back from beating Wimbledon 2-0 in the cup the year after they'd been giant killers. We sang 'jingle bells etc how good it was to see Brentford win away'. Easy and no resistance from the locals until we reached Earls Court and got chased all over the shop by a bunch of Fulham lads, not what we'd expected at all.

After that every game seemed to have at least one ruck. Watford and Aldershot seemed to provide the best sort of oppo. Beating Watford 3-0 one year and clearing the Royal Oak of the scum in the process was probably the best as the following year they beat us 3-0 as we cleared the Oak of them. That same year we confirmed promotion 1-1 away towards the end of the season with them already promoted. A huge mob grouped just the other side of some police tape from us, but equalising was great. We nearly won it too but I'm not sure my bladder would have taken the excitement or the dread of them actually carrying out their threat to remove us from the planet. I went by car that day but gather the trains were somewhat defaced that evening.

Also recall travelling home along the M4 from an evening 0-0 with Reading and encountering a removal van with Bees fans singing out of the back. That was the same game we saw some local boys donning some very big boots prior to kick off and then 'surprising' all of us even the OB it would seem by chasing us all over the open end. The New Road Boys were doing what they did best in their home end at the same time. I also have a vague recollection that the Reading Boys all seemed to wear dungarees back then.

Aldershot at home under Bill Dodgin just before it came good was exciting. They had a big turn out but were 'removed' from the Oak and as they sang 'Aldershot' we wittily retorted 'Aldershit'. They beat us 1-0 and having realised that a lot of us had changed ends at half time seemed to charge down New Road towards Ealing Road but never seemed to appear on the terrace.

Northampton at home was when I took my first kicking. We played them twice at home, winning both games in cup and league. (Dodgin was their manager then). Some big **** swathed in a union flag and his mates decided to change ends as we did. My mate Ray and I were outnumbered as we reached the Ealing Road turn so we legged it but took a few wacks on the way. I've really hated the Cobblers ever since and wonder what must have become of that bloke, who must be well into his 50's by now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In fact most teams who came to Brentford back then chanced their arm, Plymouth, Swansea, Stockport, Bradford, Huddersfield, they all gave it a go. I also recall the Nelmes testimonial when we lost 8-2 and there was still more going on off the pitch than on it. The tannoy announcer (Gilham?) referred to the mindless idiots behind the goal but the RO was alive that night.

Promotion year from Div 4 was good as the New Road seemed to vent their spleen almost fortnightly on the oppo while we looked on admiringly from the relative safety of the RO. Gillingham at home about the same time seemed decidedly unpleasant which I couldn't really work out why until I visited the place some years later...then almost instinctively I could understand it. Then I went off to college and missed most of the 80's.

I am truly amazed that anyone can remember so much detail, and quite a few of you can.
I can hardly remember a thing from the late 70's, but i know i used to go to loads of away games and all the home games, just remember things in flashes really (though that could have just been you lot flashing your todgers on the side of the motorway)

This was Plymouth away - there were a load of pitches just next to Home Park - I haven't been there since so I don't know if there still are - anyway, that's where the photo is.

Talking about CC's post, Carlisle away that season up in the Third, it seemed like everyone went, it was a bit of a must-go game being the furthest away we could ever have, a badge of honour to be there. I was one of the first people on to the terraces when we got there (juniors turnstile) and, as you did in those days, wearing colours I was strutting in a minor way (knowing there were at least a ?few hundred - god knows how many but a fair few - more coming through behind me) and got a bit of patronising comments from the locals - "eeh you've never come all the way oop from London?" - and then we outsang them all game. I think they were always a bit of a crew, Carlisle and afterwards they escorted us back to the railway station on the other side of the road (but safely behind the police) - I remember thinking that if they'd known we were coming, they'd have turned out a bit of a firm but they were caught by surprise and were a little bit over-awed by our presence. That was quite a long walk but, as I recall it, we swaggered a bit that day.

the chap in the top photo was dave goddard, second was me leigh brill, third was left to right colin thrussell, army mick, third one i dont know, fourth was wally booth, what ever happened to him. fourth photo was angie pope, dave collins and the chap standing over dave is steve alder. if that was the train to plymouth, i did very well at cards that day, i think i took a 99 pot from Dave Hayward(blondie).

Are you sure about this one? I was pretty sure the guy on the left was called Mark but I don't remember his surname.

Is Wesley your lad? Hanworth Villa U13s send reports into us at the Chronicle, and Wesley Brill is a name that rings a bell for scoring a goal or two.

Colin Thrussell does indeed still go to BFC now and again. He was in my class at school and so I have lnown him for over 30 years! He used to attend more regularly in the old days with (Tall) Colin Bevis - who posts on the GPG.

Used to be part of Hampton Wanderers FC !! when my son, aaron, was in the age group above him................hi Leigh ! Glad Wes has found a team that he enjoys playing with.....all the best

Anyone remember Exeter City away? I think it might have been early nineties when they bricked a bus. I went by train that day but seem to remember going back to the station and having great fun along the way. Always good days out had by all down there in Ambrosia land.

Couldn't agree more.

As for the nineties onwards I think most of us got older and wiser although we did have some fun now and again up till the Division One season.

Gillingham away between Christmas and New Year, late nineties, possibly '97. Horrendous game in atrocious conditions. Not so much trouble as an intimidating atmosphere. Clearly some former bad lads were in the home end just winding up the few hardy away fans who'd made the effort. Because they were so close it became pretty personal, not helped by a twit in a red clown's wig offering to take them on outside. These guys were well into their thirties and forties and just seemed to fancy a ruck. Fortunately some steel railings kept us apart and eventually the police video squad went in to record them being escorted out. Our worry then was that they were just taken out and let loose to come and see if any of us had a red wig in his pocket. Made a few bob from the coins being slung over but I didn't fancy the Fox's Glaciers.

I do remember being hit on the head by a brick thrown through the train window but can't remember where we'd been or when it was (late seventies probably). I was picking glass out of my hair for ages.

My 1st Post

Ok my memory not sure if its been mentioned yet was about 77/78 against Millwall when they came in the Oak and just run at us but little did they know the Chelsea Boys were also waiting for them. Boy did that kick off.

The biggest names back then to watch out for apart from Millwall were Watford not that they caused any probs for the New Road Boys also Gillingham and especially Sheffield United. What nutters were they! Oh happy days At GP back then. rofl

Well alot of good memories and at the end of the day no matter who came to GP they tried to take the Oak but I must say the lads stood their ground against the complete psychos from Millwall who were by far the most feared of the time, and Sheffield United. Happy days! and as said before 43 now I must not promote violence in any way but back then God! it was part of the game to kick off with other fans.

Going back a little remember going to bristol rovers late 80'S WHEN they played at Bath City got met at station on the way there and chased most of the way back to station the only reason we ran was because there was about 30 of them and 3 of us .when we got to station we slipped into the buffet bar hoping they wouldn't notice but as we were the only 3 on platform going to london it went off"";) ;)
