I remember as a kid that danis awas my hero.
does anyone have any info for me on danis & is he still involved in football?:)

Danis Salman

Those of us who were around at the time can only have fond memories of Danis Salman who should really have gone on to better things but the right move never worked out for him. The same goes for Jim McNichol my all-time favourite central defender at GP.

Danis Salman

He was one of the few players in recent decades who was genuinely tipped for great things ( was he not an
England player at some junior representative level) and one of the classiest full backs in a bees shirt.

For some reason it never worked out for him after he left and ended up as one of those players whose best days were perhaps eventually with BFC.

Danis Salman

He was capped at under 17 level if memory serves me right

Danis Salman

i'm sure danis was a england under 21 also anyone can confirm?
p.s my mum loved him

I won't forget the Salman "frustration runs" which, if he thought we weren't pushing forward, meant that he would personally try to take on the entire opposition team on his own with a blistering run straight up the middle of the field. These normally came to absolutely nothing but were very entertaining to watch.

As to the mighty Jim McNichol, spot on WOB, I can still hear the chant of "Jimmeeee, Jimmeeee" ringing out every time we got a free kick within 40 yards or so of the opposition goal.

was anyone at blackpool when we lost 5-4 and Jim McNichol scored from the halfway line from a freekick? (that was something special)

October 1979, remember it well, obviously one of the most exciting Bees games I've ever seen.

Was scheduled to be covered by ITV but never was because of a strike.

UnfortunatelyI was feeling rough that day and decided not to go as it would only have been boring - no the best decision I've ever made in my life!

I was at the Blackpool 5-4, British Rail had arranged a cheap awayday train to see the Blackpool Illuminations and the train was full of Bees fans. That game saw three of the best BFC goals you will ever see firstly Dave "Your Watching" Carlton won a 40-60 tackle about 30 yards out and got up to chip the keeper. We also had a terrific run by Dougy Allder when he beat the Blackpool defence down the left and hit over a centre which was converted by Brentford's own male model Billy Holmes with a brilliant diving header and right at the end Jim McNichol whacked a free kick home from miles out. Brilliant game with big mob of BFC fans in attendance. A lot of trouble outside the ground afterwards with police on horseback lashing out at random with long sticks. It was bloody hard to get a drink in town that night and nearly every pub had a "House Full" sign on the door.

He played in the (old) First Dvision for Millwall - not bad for winding his career down

Danis Salman

I thought Salman was a good full back. I never rated him as a centre half though and that was always his favourite position. A good tackler but got caught in possession quite a bit and made bad decisions at times.

Remember Danis' debut as a 15(?) year old when he came on as a sub against Watford. I'm sure he did get called up into the England under 21's but a big move never really materialized. He did go to Millwall and they went up into the top division with him but he had the class to have been a consistent top league player. Have a feeling he ended up at Torquay developing youth football or some such but when it was last mentioned there was a comment that he was no longer in football and that nobody knew of his whereabouts. What's on the link at the top of this thread as it's not opening now?

this billy holmes (appearances in brackets) died in 1988...

Millwall (1), Luton (1), Wimbledon (15), Hereford U (31), Brentford (15).

I bumped into Danis Salman at our away match with Plymouth in 2003. He was working for the PA and in good spirits. We even did a Bees World interview but I don't know if that still survives on the OS.

He was genuinely affectionate about his time with us and was keen to know how the old faces were still getting on.

Danis Salman

A very good player with great pace. His best position would have been as a centre half/sweeper but he was possibly just a little too small to make it at the top level. A very good servant indeed to Brentford over a number of years.

I Met Danis Yesterday!

Hello!

Just to let the inquirers know, Danis is safe and well and living in the Devon area.

I sat next to him on a plane yesterday; a bit of a waste as I'm not a football fan. He chatted to me throughout the flight and even helped me with my hand luggage and some flowers when we arrived at our destination.

I would suggest that you contact the Press Association in order to get in touch with him.

He's a real gentleman and it doesn't hurt that he's still handsome!:)

I have just seen this thread and its great to know that Danis is well. I always
thought that he was gorgeous and a very nice person. He gave me one of
his England Shirts and I still have it!

I've just seen this about Danis after being bored at worked and "googling" him to see where he was these days. Great to hear he is well. As a teenager going to watch Brentford with my dad he was my hero (along with Bob Booker) , and I have one of his England shirts too! He was always so nice and friendly and always took time to say hello. And I thought he was gorgeous too :-)

:nono: You're jumping to conclusions. Who's to say she isn't Ian St. John's daughter? Or Simon Templar's? Or the daughter of a real saint, like Paul, George, John or Peter?

One of the all time Brentford greats is Danis I reckon. Although I can't say that I found him gorgeous. Or that he gave me any items of clothing .

Danis Salman

No unfortunately nothing as exciting as any of the suggestions . I now live in Southampton and for my sins I go and watch the Saints play :-). But was brought up a Brentford fan and always used to go and watch them with my dad until I moved away. But still watch out for the Bee's each week. Off to JPT final this month - last time went to Wembly was for the Freight Rover Trophy when I think Brentford were beaten by Wigan many years ago !!!

You really should rephrase this Saintsgirl. It reads as though you accept tickets to St. Mary's as payment for sins! lol

Anyway, great clearance from Danis here on 3.12 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WK3fR6CNVXQ Is that you, 4th from the left, row 26? :sorted:

Danis Salman

Hey you spotted me in the crowd !! But 1985 - surely it wasnt that long ago ! Saints were so bad to watch couple of times last season that thought I must have done something bad in a previous life to be suffering those games. But not now :-)

Your manager is a ****. Met him two weeks ago, was hugely condesending towards Brentford as usual.

Come back to the Bees before it's too late:(
