Darren Powell

No my name isn't Pandora, but Darren Powell going to Southampton before the weekend. Sorry failed to add the word 'is' in all of that. I know it is dire news.

Darren Powell

MMM not sure about this where have you got this info from?

Darren Powell

Ceefax quotes the Saints chairman as saying that he is hopeful of signing new players before the weekend.

No mention of who.

Hopefully not Powelly.

Darren Powell

Might explain our alleged interest in Mackie, also on the official site Griffin is quoted about having to let players go before any more can be signed.....is he softening us up???

Anyway hope not as Powelly is in superb form.

Darren Powell

Powelly not playing tonight. Let's hope it's because he's being rested & nothing to do with any possible transfer

Teamtosh says

Bees defender available
Brentford are ready to listen to offers for centre-back Darren Powell, who is valued at over £1million, and thought to interest Southampton.
The gangly defender is out of contract at the end of the season and Bees chairman Ron Noades is anxious to cash in before he goes for nothing on a Bosman.
Noades values the former Hampton player at more than £1.5million and believes he is more than capable of playing in the Premiership.
He is also rumoured to have checked out two or three possible replacements for the player, who has been in top form so far this term.
Noades is looking for a young replacement but is said to want to keep any outlay to a minimum to make sure any money for Powell offsets some of the club's debts.
Noades has told boss Steve Coppell to begin looking for tall, mobile central defenders in case Powell should go within the next month.
Powell has told friends he is very happy at Brentford and in no hurry to move, but Noades's financial situation may force him to go.
Southampton are still watching the defender but have yet to weigh in with a formal bid following the exit of their former centre-back Dean Richards.

speculation in my favourite high brow paper today, the daily star that southampton are after Michael Duberry from Leeds.Hopefully this will mean Powelly will be staying for the time being.

Darren Powell

I also hope this isnt true,we have looked very solid at the back and are looking extremely good at the top of the table.

Now i am fully aware of the debt problem and the need to do something about this, but surely selling the best players at the club when we r looking so strong and able to maintain a promotion push this year seems daft.

The club i think must achieve promotion this year, and i actually think we are able to do this with the squad we have at the moment.

I know people will say about players contracts etc etc,but if we achieve promotion we will be in a position to renew these contracts due to the higher attendances which we would get,and hopefully go on and maintain a 1st division position.

All clubs have debts,so why not show a bit of ambition instead of just saying lets get on an even footing and just hop around divs 2 and 3... im getting fed up watching the likes of bury etc year in year out.

i thought soton were after gary breen from cov to replace dean "half ear" richards

If we get an offer over £1 million it would be madness not to let Darren go to Soton! He's a great player, but if it meant that we were in a better position to retain vital and irreplaceable players like Evo and Gav or even to make an offer on Burgess I'd jump at it. Last season Theobold looked capable of becoming a decent centre back as was Marshall before his injury (when is he likely to be back in action). The Reading and Cambridge fans rated Mackie and if he came in on a free we'd be OK. There might be a little lag as Ivar formed a new central partnership, but we're bound to have a little slump at some point anyway!

Darren Powell

Seriously doubt this is true - what kind of Premiership club pays a million quid for a second division player with no experience at any higher level? Soton are after Coventry's centre back anyway I heard

Darren Powell

Could be but papers are suggesting that Soton have put all buys on hold for the next three matches, logic is that if Gray goes they will save money for new guy.

If that happens can't see Powell going there anyway.

Espeically as we could both be first division clubs next season.

Darren Powell

IF we get 1million + AND can spend on improving the squad then sacrifices have to be made! BUT, that isn't likely to happen is it? Still, he can walk away at the end of the season if he wants....

Darren Powell

He's going nowhere. Mere puffery!!!

Don't like the sound of him not playing unless it is for an injury. We haven't anybody with his pace at the back.

Darren Powell

well, the saints have signed some muppet from coventry, note the strachan link there...

powelly remains a bee for the time being

Darren Powell

Soton have signed Paul Williams on loan with a view to a permanent move, probably the end of Powell going there as he is a similar player. Anyway Strachan does'nt rate nationwide players has says so more than once, he will go for proven PL or foreign players.

As much as I like GS, if he has said this, what a c**t he is). Does he honestly think think that every premiership superstar comes through the Man Ure school of excellence, or started as a Arse schoolboy.
Perhaps he should remember where the likes of some of englands hero's came from.

Today's Mirror reports that Charlton have joined Southampton in being interested in signing Darren.

It also states that watford have bid £500k for Gav.

Noooo!

It's only natural that our players are becoming targets. We need to reduce the overdraft so we must sell even if it appears we're jeopardising our promotion chances. However, with Steve Coppell in charge I think we have a manager that can weigh up sales with suitable acquisitins to keep the promotion drive going. So let's hope that Steve will get the chance to reinvest a proportion of any transfer money. All I ask is that we don't under value players.

Oi ! Lew leave it !

Darren Powell

Lew isn't at watford is he?

I thought he went to west ham in last minute turn around!

Darren Powell

anyone else at Reading notice that Darren was the last player to stop clapping the Bees' fans ?? Did he know something ?

Superb player, would be at home in the Premiership.

Darren Powell

Double post.

But the trouble is that the money always goes the wrong way! Remember the rumours that we were going to splash out on Trevor Benjamin after we sold Hermann? Where did the money end up going? Swallowed up by the debt, that's where! If we sold Powell for £1m I doubt even half of that would go towards new players!

But it may enable us to hold onto other players that we already have.

Not a hope in hell Alex - you had a bang on the head or has the stress of moving got to you ?

Any money coming in will simply reduce the debt, that's all

Darren Powell

Simple equation

We sell Powell = No Promotion.

Perhaps we should have another thread asking fellow members whether they would prefer to cash in on our players higher values now that we're top to reduce the overdraft or go for promotion. Naturally I would like to see both happen and I think Steve Coppell is one manager who can successfully sell players and still keep us in the promotion hunt.

Darren Powell

So you think we should sell Powell & Mahon. Who replaces Powell? Marshall - injured! Theobald - promising but no Powell.
Who replaces Mahon? Evans - injured! Rowlands - injured!

Let's keep 'em & go for promotion.

i understood that their was a huge gap in terms of dosh between divs 1 and 2. if we kept our squad together, and go up, we'd benefit from a bigger home crowd(!), better gate receipts from away matches, and most importantly i suppose, more tv money. a season or two in div 1 would surely wipe out most if not all of the debt.
i trust coppells management but spending on new (free or loan) players to rebuild a squad half way through the season is surely counter productive in terms of a promotion drive.
but then, if the money grabbing sods want to leave...
