David James Appreciation Thread

According to Sven, David James has "Saved us on many occasions before." which is why he will play Wednesday.

Could posters please list these occasions

  :grey:

I think he played fantastically

David James Appreciation Thread

To be fair I do remember one fantastic save he made, which I doubt too many keepers would have made, against Turkey at the Stadium of Light just after Darius had put us 1-0 up.

If he hadn't of made that save I don't think we would have qualified, or certainly not automatically anyway.

Saying that though, he is sh*te and should be dropped immediately. It really is embarrassing to see him make these mistakes over and over again, game after game, and never feel that his place in the team is under threat at all.

In Davis James defence (!!!!)

A) I don't think he has let England down previously, and certainly not to the extent that past "greats" like Peter Shilton and Ray Clemence both did.

B) Over the last couple of years their hasn't exactly been any other goalies putting their hands up for the job and saving to Sven I'm the best. Robinson, maybe, but he was indifferent for Leeds last year, while Kirkland is a non-starter quite literally.

The reality is that unlike in decades gone by at the moment their is not a top class English Britissh goalie around at the moment.

Another footnote- Lampards push that gave away the free-kick for the first goal was as stupid (if not more so, as he is a midfielder) as Heskeys challenge against France in Euro 2004, but we don't mention that do we.

James seems to be clueless in his positioning when the opposition has a free kick. Also his judgement is poor when he has to come of his line, aka bringing down Henry during Euro2004. He must be ditched and Paul Robinson should be the GK for the next game.

James is a not a good goalkeeper. To my mind, a good goalie, is reliable, confident coming off his line and ''A safe pair of hands.'' He is none of these & is getting found out at the highest level. The worrying thing is the limited choice of alternatives.

I thought he was great in Carry on up the Khyber.

Oh. Sorry. That was Sid James. In that case, I don't know when

David James is our equivalent of Alan Rough, the finest goalkeeper Scotland ever produced...

I can't help thinking that I'd rather have Paul Smith in goal than David James!

Me too Ed, he surely wouldn't be prone to the same howlers (now he's had his ONE career howler in the Hudders play off game) :D

David James = useless and way overated

Calamity James is never an International Goalkeeper imho :nono:

He makes two or three mistakes every single game and Saturday saw us suffer because of it.

Sven's judgement on keepers isn't great though, how the f*ck did Ian Walker make it in to the Euro 2004 squad ???

I'd put Paul Robinson in for Wednesday.

I think most people would. The only problem is, Sven won't.

I'm all for giving people a chance to redeem themselves after a mistake, but it is time and time again that James has cocked up, and it has adversely affected the final score on more than one occasion now :nono:

Robinson may have had a slightly suspect season with Leeds last year, but then who didn't, and Spurs now have the second best defensive record in the Premiershite after his move there, so please Sven, give Robinson his chance! :sorted:

/QUOTE]

Please quote some facts on this? They played excess of 150 times for England and doubt they made as many expensive mistakes as James in his 25 games.

David James Appreciation Thread

Surely the 'big mans' had his chance. Is it only the fans that can see the 'C*ck ups' that he does...at least one in every game I've seen.

How many more freekicks is he going to let in? Put 'Tabby' back on the line (Maybe Neville)!!!?? He definetly needs the help!!!

David James Appreciation Thread

Everyone was waiting for it to happen, just so they can get on the band wagon and slate him again !!!
I believe he should still be keeper, players have bad games, James was faultless through Euro 04 !!!

GeeBee:-
Shilton famously against Poland in "the " World Cup Qualifier ( a very similar mistake to James's)< plus the hand od God incident. Clemence in the Home international against Scotland.
I'm not saying James is good. I am saying that it is understandable that Sven has been picking him as the best of a pretty mediocre bunch. The situation with James is very similar to the situation with Heskey. Neither are particularly great, but until recently, ie, until Rooney, +/or Alan smith, (who I really like, but not as an out and out centre-forward), nobody was exactly falling over themselves to take either of their places.

David James Appreciation Thread

If your looking for a simply answer to the problem Make Nigel Martyn No 1 him and rooney saved everton from relegation last season and although 36 he is still one of the best

David James Appreciation Thread

what about robinson or kirkland?? not experienced but who cares? look at the 'experienced' david james. he is rubbish
and if anyone saw the sun today they had a list of some of his mistakes that hes made.
and because of the goal he conceded, people forget about the incident when he was nearly 10 yards outside his box chasing the ball, when john terry covered his arse by putting the ball out for a corner from a goalbound shot.
(that was also pretty lucky it came off his studs!) id even have terry in goal over james. or my nan could do a job

David James Appreciation Thread

Although James doesn't exactly fill me with confidence I don't think he's let England down.

The save against Turkey was world class and IMHO Saturday was the first time I'd put a goal squarely down to him.

Robinson should be 1st choice, but before Saturday I could see why James kept his place.

David James Appreciation Thread

He's there because there is no one else. Strange how people go for Robinson who makes frequent mistakes which seem to get overlooked somehow, he does the spectacular but doesn't always get the basics right.

We have few decent keepers due to the premiershite clubs' insistence on going for foreign keepers simple as that. The likes of Green, Hoult and even our own Smudger just don't get a look in, Kirkland is a walking hospital case.

And how many expensive mistakes is that? One, on Saturday? After the way Gerrard cocked up against France, I'm not sure any goalkeeper on earth would have prevented Henry from scoring in that split-second, so to put that down as his expensive mistake is wrong.

As has been said elsewhere, if an unpopular player had given away the free kick for the first goal, everyone would be screaming blue murder at him. Lucky for Lampard that he's not Heskey, James or the manager, so there's no blame.

The Norwich keeper should be fast tracked into the squad

He's already in the squad.

If Norwich manage to stay up, or look likely to do so he could be 1st choice by Christmas.

The real problem is Sven is a stubborn bastard who thinks he knows bests and the more people call for the head of Beckham, James etc the more he will play them. The fact is on current form neither should be in the England side and we should thank Paul Scholes for doing the decent thing and retiring as he had been appauling for England in recent years.

Our problem is we have to many passengers in the side at the moment and although we have some geniune world class players in the likes of Campbell, Terry, Gerrard, Lampard, Owen and Rooney. Until we can get

A decent goalkeeper
A decent left side midfielder
Shaun Wright Phillps placed on the right of midfield instead of Beckham (unless he can start to produce the Beckham of old)
A manager who doesn't sit back too often when we go a goal up

we will achieve nothing. However sort out these problems and we could geniunly be a force.

David James Appreciation Thread

It's hard to have a gourmet meal when the only choices on the menu are tripe or kippers.

It's hard to pick a world class goalie when those available are so far short of international calibre.

David James Appreciation Thread

Got to admit that due to being at a wedding I had not seen the error until I looked at this thread ! What an idiot... lol

We have all obviously seen him flap away at crosses/corners for years in the domestic game and if you said to me 5 or 10 years ago would he ever be Englands unchallenged number one I'd have laughed so much I'd have cried.

Nevertheless here we are on 08/09/04 and awaiting to see what 'special' Mr James has lined up for us in a crucial World Cup qualifier  The arguement that none of the other keepers has international experience is crap, if we do not play Robinson then how will we ever know !?!?!?

Ah well, only half an hour til the pub...

From news.bbc.co.uk

"England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson is pondering a selection gamble by dropping goalkeeper David James and playing Paul Robinson against Poland.

Eriksson appeared to confirm James would play in the World Cup qualifier, despite his mistake in the 2-2 draw against Austria on Saturday.

But BBC Sport understands Eriksson may yet pick Tottenham goalkeeper Robinson.

And Eriksson is also considering a change up front, with Jermain Defoe possibly replacing Alan Smith. "

David James was supposed to be at my lad's club today as part of an event with Access Sport, but he didn't show. Luckily we didn't get the kids' expectations up too much beforehand, but some still brought along shirts to get signed and made sure their parents had cameras with them. Anyway, it's just a small club of eight- to eleven year olds, so it probably hardly registers on his priority list.
