Pretty sure we were after him before he'd played a pro game when he was at somewhere like Slough or another local club?
Some older statto will know.

he was assistant with that ****er at Luton Joe Kinnear.. I said to him, I clearly remember that tackle that ruined your career at Brentford.. is was a massive signing for us.. what a shame..

He was brilliant for Plymouth and I was delighted when we signed him. Sadly the injury curse got him.

I don't know about that Dave, I know he lived in Harrow. He was good mates with a nutter called Roy Davies. and Roy was good mates with Wally Downes. Kempey & Roy both played for Slough town. They both moved on to professional footy . Went to the Apollo in Victoria , to see AC/DC with them. When the bees played Plymouth away on a Tuesday night, we were meant to be going back to London, Kempy said come out with us, we ended up in a nightclub with the Plymouth boys. They had a centre back called George Foster he was a real nice guy. We stayed over at Dave Kemps flat, and went home the next day, bloody hanging. Dave Kemp is a top bloke, and was always a good laugh.

He played a reserve match in 1974/75 on trial from Slough. It was just after John Docherty had taken over from Mike Everitt as manager and the same season that Alan Devonshire was also rejected after a trial for the reserves.

I remember because it was back page headlines in the Evening Mail local paper. For whatever reason he didn't my sign and by the time he got to Plymouth it was obvious he was one who got away.
I know my Dad saw Devonshire at Southall before he came on trial and thought he was very skilful but very skinny and a bit lightweight so guess that's how the club saw him?

He was a big, nasty, hard, old school centre half. Think he'd struggle to adapt to today's non contact game!

I stand to be corrected I am a mile or two out I do remember that you and Dyer knew him from back then.

Kemp played for Slough before moving into the league, and had an excellent reputation there. Rejecting him and Devonshire in one season? What we were thinking of back then!

I was too young to remember the actual reason why we didn't take Kemp because the local papers were all raving about him.
However as I mentioned before a lot of clubs had been alerted to Devonshire at Southall and only West Ham took a chance as he was seen as too skinny and not strong enough.

Super header!

I was at Roots Hall, when he scored his one goal for Brentford, in an evening match v Southend United in 1982, to cancel out an early effort from former Bee, Steve Phillips..
And what a goal it was!
Terry Hurlock, in midfield, fed the ball out to left back Mark Hill, who raced down the left wing and hit a hard , high , cross, from close to the corner flag.
David Kemp steamed in and met the ball perfectly with his forehead to crash home a stunning headed equaliser.
I froze my goollies off on that bitterly cold night, but seeing that goal made it all worthwhile!:sorted:
I believe I also saw him play against the Bees in that Cup Tie in the 1970's at Walton & Hersham's ground...

Yes, that was the reason given, but when you think of the (lack of) quality in the team at the time, it was a pretty appalling decision.

I thought he stated that he was retiring this is probably part of his plan to wind down. As an aside his brother was my PE teacher.
