David Pleat

How annoying was this guy today???

I know the guy is clearly a football anorak but is past his sell by date as a commentator.

"John Hails" and "Nightin gale" being some of his worst today.

Still, at least not BBC and Motty:rolleyes:

David Pleat

I thought he came across as quite knowledgeable and respectful of the lower leagues.

Agree, was surprised how much he knew about our team, also rightly picked out that if we used Bean and KOC more in the second hlaf ( which we did) we could boss the game..which we sort of did.

me too, he did pronounce some words oddly, but he knew his stuff.

I don't deny he's got the knowledge, I just said I find his commentary annoying. And when you say he knew a lot about our team I doubt he'd heard of any of our players until the last 48 hours when he began his research:)

I bet you he knew the strengths and weaknesses of every player in our side long before the game.

David Pleat

just like to say big thumbs up to Martin Allen who done nothing but praise the Bees fans as fantastic and clearly wanted the bees to win unlike that idiot townsend who was clearly wanting Havant to win and moaning about a pen that was not given for havant but Greg Dyke told him so.

Well done MA and I would always welcome him wherever we play as it was fantastic times under his management.

David Pleat

Annoying pronounciation of words from Pleat, however liked his commentary very much...darn sight better than Andy Gray :box:

You may well be right, I know of one well known ex manager and pundit who commentated on a Euro cup match. He went on the beer for the afternoon and then retired to his hotel room 4 hours before the game to start his research.

Pleat came across very knowledgable on BFC. Martin Allen was an absolute gem praising the fans and his time at the club. Andy Townsend wanted a cup upset and had nothing good to say, hes obviously been to too many Premiership games.

David Pleat

Pleat is quality and easy on the ear unlike most of the demented ***** on tv lately!:nono:

I very much doubt it. Unless he goes to a lot of games a season then I think it is very unlikely that he will know the strengths and weaknessess of any team.

The guy has a lot of football knowledge and he writes very well in newspaper columns on scouting younger players, Billionaire takeover's, Champions League etc I just don't think you can say he knows the ins and outs of the lower leagues. What he said on us was impressive, I don't deny it, but he clearly has lower league contacts and has probably been tapping into their knowledge the last few days, and fair play to him:sorted:

I like Pleat, I thought he knew his stuff today, I have never ever heard a bad word from him neither about Brentford..

another Pleat fan here - he can't pronounce a damn thing correctly, but that aside he knows his stuff, no doubt :sorted:

Is he supposed to know about every football player in the football league and non-league football when he's spent the last few years solely commentating on Champions League?

The fact is he actually did his homework about Havant and that other team playing yesterday...

If you read my other post I said fair play for him doing his research and I also stated that I enjoy reading his other stuff, ie the champions league.

I just think some people are going a bit over the top saying he's now a bees expert.

I've seen him at GP at least 3 times before. Considering the range of games he gets to cover his knowledge of lower league football is very good. He had a scouting column in the Guardian which was very good which Steve Claridge took over.

David Pleat

His job is as a football consultant, most recently at Forest who were in the Division above us. As part of that job, I would expect him to know all possible transfer targets and I would have thought just from that gig he would know all about Charlie, Elder, Williams as a minimum. He may have worked with Poole at Tottenham. He'll almost certainly know all of the Reading squad.

Do you remember Martin Allen's boast that he knew every player in London club'ss first team, reserves and academies?. Why wouldn't Pleat, who has been around football for 127 years, have the same depth of knowledge - after all, it's what scouts do and what they build their reputation on.

Of our squad, I would've thought that he'd struggle with Brown and Ademola and that's it.

David Pleat

I realised about a year ago the Pleat is the only pundit and I mean only pundit that says things during the game that I can't work out myself. He says things in anticipation of what is about to happen and can see very quickly where the main issues are. ie getting the ball to Williams yesterday, and the Bean/O Connor scenario.

Other pundits simply say things that are blatantly obvious which dont add a different perspective to what the picture shows.

Pleat may be a strange looking man with a penchant for driving slowly, but his analysis and understanding of a football match is superb.

Hamer's Kicking for instants, he said he should throw the ball instead:sorted:

I don't recall Allen's boast but I would hazard a guess that it was slightly tongue in cheek. Allen has managed in league and non-league football so clearly will know a lot of players but I remember him being on one of the football league shows and stating he felt out of his depth talking about the championship.

Again, my point on Pleat wasn't questioning his football knowledge, and yes he did make some relevant an insightful points it's just I disagree that he would know the ins and outs of us. I would rather listen to the likes of Kamara talk about the lower leagues because that is what he does regularly.

If I had a mate who was an arsenal season ticket holder and I spent a few days watching videos of their last few games I wouldn't pretend to know more than the guy who watches them week in, week out.

David Pleat

When I saw a new post in this thread I thought he was either dead or had been arrested again for Kerb Crawling.

David Pleat

I can forgive his kerb crawling. We all do that from time to time. But I lost all respect I may or may not have had for him (I'd never actually considered it) after reading an article recently about how sh*t Luton are.

That famous image of him dancing across the pitch like someone's uncle at a wedding when Luton stayed up that year? Well, turns out his father in law had died the day before. Now full marks for professionalism - the show must indeed go on. But I'd like to think I would have enough respect for my wife to moderate my celebrations a tad under such circumstances. Oh how those images must bring the happy memories flooding back to her .

David Pleat

I celebrated exactly like that when my third wife died! :xxxxx:

David Pleat

David Pleat and Clive Tyldesley both p|ss me off. My favourite commentary duo has to be Jonathan Pearce and Mark Bright.

Or perhaps it was a release of all the stress built up due to the combination of his father-in-law's death and being in a relegation battle all season which was only won in the last 5 mins of the season. What a ridiculous post.

THE PREVIOUS DAY!!!!!!!! Perhaps his Pythonesque jolly across the pitch was a release of pressure. "Your dad is still warm but look, we stayed up darling." :loosescrew:. Is there a grown up with you, or do I need to deal with you directly in future posts?

David Pleat

I imagine if it was any ordinary game he wouldn't have been there, but it wasn't an ordinary game.

I'm not even sure it was the previous day, when I've ready any reference to that it was in the previous week. Football is a release from things and in that 90 mins he was doing his job - I'm sure his wife was pleased that Luton stayed up and happy for David.

She did stand by him after he got nicked twice for kerb-crawling - which IMO she probably had more reason to bear a grievance about.

In my first post, I paid tribute to his professional 'show must go on' disposition. You say, "I'm sure his wife was pleased that Luton stayed up and happy for David." Well. Know what? I'm sure his wife was too beside herself with grief at the loss of the man that created her at that time to give a flying feck about football, or David's career. So what is so ridiculous about my post?

Speaking personally, I found that when my Mum died, I still found football a huge release and although I was numb with grief, I still celebrated a victory and I don't feel that makes me a bad person. Perhaps I'm wrong though.

I don't think that makes you a bad person . But if your wife or girlfriend's mum had died the day before and you expressed your grief by celebrating a football victory, I reckon she'd consider you a bit of a sh*t .
