I'm with you 100%. It's the way we play. We're trying to draw the opposition onto us to create and then exploit gaps upfield. We're probing and looking for gaps and intelligent movement from our midfielders and forwards. Patience is a real virtue these days, the way teams set up at GP.
The only time I find this pattern of play slightly frustrating is when a midfielder comes to receive the ball and then returns it one touch whence it came when under no pressure at all. Fine when there's a player up his backside, but when no opponent on him, I would like to see the midfielder turn and drive through the middle at pace. Similarly, would be happy to see a central defender do the same from time to time just to shake things up a little. Just to give the opponent something else to think about. We don't do this anywhere near enough. Likelihood is, when doing this, one or two opposing midfielders would be drawn out of position to plug the gap, and this might then create space out wide for wing-back or winger to exploit.

Of course playing out and probing is the way we play and have done for some years now, but the short passes between Raya and Racic in the first half at slow pace weren't doing any of those things. They were symptomatic of nobody moving for/wanting the ball except for Rico and a lack of confidence from Racic about what to do with it when he got it, hence he kept tapping it back. We're better than that.

Every team does their homework on us and knows we play it short from goal kicks, and usually marks our three centre-backs. Playing it long every now and again would lead to the opposition dropping back, giving us more time on the ball when we do choose to play it out.
I'd be pretty happy if every now and again we played it long - at least it would keep the opposition guessing. It's all just too predictable.

Maybe, but to what end (other than the one you state)? At best, ensuing possession is a 50/50 lottery. But given the height of our forward line, in practice we simply give up possession by doing this. Only exception to this is to play out wide right to Dalsgaard, and I'm not totally opposed to this as an occasional option, so long as his right back slot is adequately covered in case of a counter-attack.

Opposition teams take different approaches, though. Some will press the centre backs, while others will allow the CB's to play the ball around but press potential receivers – keeping tight on the four across the middle. Some play a high defensive line, while others sit deep. That will generally determine what we can do. What is required is the midfield and attacking lines to move around and try to find space; that's what is so often missing.
Henrik and Ollie are really the only target players for a long ball, unless the opposition play a high back line and we can use some speed to get in behind. I'd guess, with what looks like some speedy recruits, this will become more of an option.

We do mix it up, but we lose the ball.....

Another part of what they do - which varies from one team to another - is target a specific player. Some teams recognise that one player is weaker on the ball than others (say Mads Bech, purely as an example) and let him have the ball while they focus on other players. Other teams immediately press him.

He did a few long clearances out to Henry with great backspin which he got to. The long balls out are at least directed (and a new thing for us to mix it up). As with a lot of stuff we're trying, it will take a bit of time to adjust and get it right. It'll be an odd thing to see the first time we get a route 1 goal when we're known as afficionados of tippy tappy.

It's also about having confidence in the defence, I'm sure if he had Pontus in front of him there he would know he wouldn't have to run out and try and jump for it.

He's a very good footballer. And a commanding keeper so far, especially for one lacking a little in height. Breeding confidence amongst those in front of him.

Looks an excellent signing. Really confident on the ball and the defenders seem to have confidence in him too. We played out v well at times today. Also like the way he catches crosses but didn’t have a lot else to do today!!

But let’s remember the problem with Bentley wasn’t whether he was capable of excellence, it was more his tendency to have moments of madness.
Raya had one such moment at Boro, which we were lucky to get away with. For me, he must still prove he’s not prone to similar moments over a whole season before I judge him as an upgrade.

I do rate him, a lot. Based on what I’ve seen, he’s likely to have a good PL career ahead of him in future.
Just making the point that we can’t really judge whether he’s an ‘upgrade’ or not until we know moments like Boro away won’t be repeated. Consistency is key.

It wasn’t only Bentleys ability to drop a rickett, it was the fact his confidence was shot that much he was struggling to do the basics which was then filtering into the defence in front of him having no confidence.
Raya is a complete upgrade, even if he drops the odd clanger here and there, which he will as he’s always available for the pass back and refuses to waste the ball by just hammering it up field, not to mention he appears to try and claim everything possible in his box as well, therefore is putting himself in the firing line.

It’s not just a keepers abilities but also his relationship with defenders that’s important. Was clearly in charge yesterday, directing his defenders.
Last season I expected the worst every time we conceded a corner. We seem more confident at dealing with them this season.

Just seems safe and reliable, I don't have that uncomfortable feeling about the keeper like that I had with Bentley, which honestly I didn't realise I'd had been carrying until this season. For a goalkeeper two years younger than Bentley as well we have definitely done well on this one.

He made one of his few saves towards the end of the game. I’m not quite sure how he did it and it’s not on the Highlights, but it looked li like a one handed claim for the ball a bit like Pat Jennings used to do. It was another bit of class. I did a quick glance at the BBC Sports , Bristol City Middlesbrough game and showed my mate an entry “ Bentley punches nervously and it fell to a Middlesbrough forward” that brought back bad memories. This guy is a better all round keeper.

He will make mistakes. All keepers do. But his positive attitude and confidence in owning the area is a massive difference this year. As far as shot stopping goes, he's not really had to work yet. No chance at all with any of the goals we've conceeded and he's barely had to make a save beyond that. Odd to say when we've lost 3 out of 6. Perhaps an indicator of how well we've dominated games so far (except Leeds..)
