David Raya

Makes the the Opta stats team of the season

David Raya (Brentford)

One of only four players to play every minute of the 2022-23 Premier League campaign, Brentford goalkeeper David Raya was a huge part of the Bees' highest top-flight finish since 1938.

The Spaniard made the most saves of any goalkeeper (154) and had the best save percentage (77%) of any goalkeeper to play at least five times across the campaign.

Raya's ability to play long passes has also suited Brentford, who played the most long passes of any Premier League side in 2022-23. Raya completed 410 long passes, the most by a goalkeeper in a season since 2017-18 (Jonas Lossl, 420 for Huddersfield).
So that's why we signed Lossi! I knew there must have been a reason. It certainly wasn't for his shot stopping!

David Raya

Which Champions League team could he easily be playing for?

It would have to be abroad because City, Arsenal and Newcastle have settled first choice keepers, and Utd’s is a bit wobbly but there’s no guarantee a new keeper would walk straight in and take over.

He’s a great keeper but I don’t see where he goes that’s a significant step up and he gets regular first team appearances.

He could earn more money at lots of clubs, but Chelsea and Spurs are the only ones where he could be the main man and they’re not even in Europe next season.
You say that Citeh, Arsenal and Newcastle have settled keepers... but I honestly think that Raya has had a better season than all 3 (although you could argue Pope had a good season, I definitely wouldn't say Pope's better than Raya).
Seems Ederson hasn't had the best season by his standards and knowing how Pep likes to play/likes to have 2 WC starters in each position, I'm surprised they're not in for Raya tbh

David Raya

No way we sell him for £40 Million. Just can’t see it happening. He’s so valuable to us I wouldn’t mind forgoing a transfer fee to squeeze one more season out of him, even if we may have just signed another top keeper.

David Raya

Yep, I think that's just our public stance, the actual fee will be lower IMO.

What you say about City is a fair shout (I don’t see it happening btw), but it would still mean playing second fiddle. I suppose a ton of cash each week is enough to make anyone feel better though.

I saw some EPL GK stats the other day and Pope has had a great season, apparently, and Raya’s stats are very comparable.

He’s certainly good enough, it’s just a question of can a big club buy such a key player from little old Brentford.

David Raya

Get what you’re saying of course and yes to get the money for him will beneficial long term. When was the last time Spurs won anything Chelsea could easily bounce back but are in a right mess. What I was getting at the comments he deserves a shot at the big time. We are not going to Halifax anymore and yes we are miles behind Man U but surely we don’t want to end up like Southampton.
If we’re buying players from the Championship and selling them to top 4 clubs for a load of money we’re going to be very attractive to the next generation of players. We’ve gone in about 5 years from buying L1/2 and selling to rich Champs clubs (eg Hogan, Gray etc) to selling to middling PL clubs (Watkins, Benrahma) to having Big 6 clubs and top 4 interests. All while improving overall.

There may be a bit of “if only” if Man U win the PL and CL in 2025 with a Brentford old boys core of Raya, Eriksen, Toney but only a little bit as long as we keep progressing. It’s certainly not going to be like watching Reading get to the PL in the early 00s with half our team and manager got for nothing as we fought the risk of bankruptcy and L2 and below.

That’s mad in the context of having signed Flekken. Unless Flekken is so bad on his own that he costs us 25+ more points a season than Raya and sends us down. Otherwise, even if Flekken is solely to blame but we drop a few places there’s a lot of benefit in taking the profit. If he’s comparably effective in the team there’s no downside at all. Foregoing £40m is like saying “I’d rather we didn’t win the FA Cup and finish 4th next season”.

You're right, I can't see anyone paying £40mil for a player in their last 12 months either!

If we refuse to sell him then I wouldn't be overly keen on having a disgruntled player on our books, so would rather we get our business sorted and let him move on.

David Raya

Mr.Raya is that agents most expensive asset valued at £21614200.00. Next most valuable player £345827.20.

Declan Rice is valued on there as £70m and most will have seen the silly larger numbers doing the rounds about his potential fee this summer. Raya's agent won't have anything to moan about anyhow, there's a few desperate English big 6 clubs out there at the mo looking for a GK like Raya.

The reality is that we’d probably sell him for £30m which is about what we’ll end up getting.

We haven’t signed Flekken to sit on the bench and he hasn’t left a club who narrowly missed out the CL to sit on the bench.

Just had Man Utd on the phone asking about Harry Kane. ;)

But he's worth whatever someone is willing to pay, and if three of the so called Big 6 (fortunately) need a new keeper and at least a couple make enquiries, we won't be selling him cheap. He's a great keeper with that added mythical "PL experience".

In a way if it's a bit of an auction I don't think it matters whether he has a year left or not, these clubs have gigantic budgets to sign the right players. If there really is only one bidder interested throughout the summer then I suppose it becomes a bit more of a game of chicken and we risk missing out on the money completely.

I feel like some of us went down this road with Christian Eriksen, he was "bound to stay" because we had convinced ourselves that every possible suitor was unsuitable.

I said in the transfer forum thread a while ago but I don't think Spurs finishing 8th or Chelsea 12th matters at all to their desirability as a step up from us, even if it irks a few fans. He'll be on a long contract with an unimaginable pay increase... and with a big promise that they are heading back to the big time with him and others on board. They will be shopping for all the same targets this summer as they would have if they'd finished higher up the league and I doubt any will be put off by a year out of Europe.

David Raya

He’s home grown. Only 27. Speaks perfect Spanish and English which opens more doors. Proven to be one of the best goalkeepers in the best league in the world. Is also under contract with one of the best transfer dealing clubs in the world. Not sure why any of our fans worry about us not getting the price we want. You’ve had since 15/16 to come to grips with us squeezing every penny out of ‘bigger’ clubs. :bounce:

David Raya

Was listening to Mark Goldridge (a famous Man Utd YouTuber) earlier and he commented that United are notoriously bad at negotiations. Over the years they've had their pants pulled down on so many occasions it's become laughable. Throw Chelsea into the mix with Todd Boehly's billions and I think we have what's called a perfect storm. David will go for whatever amount our DoF's think is the right price and not a penny less in my opinion. And that's before we even start considering that w***er Levy trying to buy him on the cheap.

David Raya

Flekken is going to play.

If Raya and his agent want to be greedy put down an ultimatum for us to let him go for less than he is worth, it is because they want a bigger salary and signing fee for themselves.

Fine, but then they will risk him being sat around not playing next season. Neither party wins in that case.

David Raya

And we’ll never know the fee probably!
Whatever is reported, particularly if leaked by the buying club, you can be sure it’s an exaggeration!

David Raya

You have to feel for the agent though. Getting a deal done, this summer is probably the difference between him being able to upgrade his yacht or not.
He’ll make more if Raya goes on a free.

Maybe he’s an idiot. Maybe he doesn’t know what he’s doing and is demoralising Raya by saying he’s not worth the £40m TF indicated.

But I wonder whether any of you have ever seen an auction and thought about how auctioneers do well. Why is it that eBay is so successful?

What you need to get a great price is to have a lot of bidders. If there’s a signed Brentford shirt up at a charity dinner, everyone knows it’s worth maybe about £300-400. You know as it’s for charity some rich guys will probably bid a lot more. Start the auction at £300 and you’ll get two or three rich guys bidding and very quickly one will drop out as they see the others are intent and it’ll end up going for £600 as the two left will quickly decide it’s a mugs game trying to outbid each other. Start it at £30 and you’ll get half the room throwing their hand up to raise by £5,10,50 and a bunch who’d not have bothered with a starting bid of £300 knowing it’s going out of reach will have bid £350,£400, £500 by the time the rich guys have started bidding. The shirt now seems more valuable because it’s obvious a lot really want it and will push out from their original budget and valuation. Shirt then goes for £1000.

We’ll want some clubs who ultimately might pull out or who Raya might not want to go to to be lured in by the chance of picking him up for £20-£25m to stick in a £15m feeler. Let West Ham, Chelsea, Forest, Spurs muck around to take the bidding to £25-£30m while say Man U and Newcastle ready themselves to land the winning bid at well north of there. Or, if De Gea loses a leg in a waterskiing accident just before returning to training, Man U hits the “buy it now” button and bids £50m. BFC, Raya and agent want this summer to be filled with as many clubs as possible making offers. It’s in none of their interests for BFC to sit there in front of a phone that doesn’t ring because nobody is immediately offering £40m or BFC is hanging up on anyone mentioning anything less.

Agreed secret is to keep getting an improved player from the one sold. That must be increasingly difficult but so far well managed. But like you say when someone else benefits it’s a bitter pill and a dose of if only..

The combination of it being Reading, the sheer number of our people and the contrast between scrabbling around under Wally to them getting to the PL with a huge number of points makes that hard to beat.

David Raya

The Dofs have been here before, we will get what we want. The interest from several clubs and their desperation will mean we get what we want. The Dofs will sit tight until our valuation is met, all the noise that you see is just part of the game. Be patient it's early days.

David Raya

are we not considering that our valuation of £40m has always been higher than we expected to settle on, and this is all just part of the game?

David Raya

It’s an empty threat by his agent. A year on the bench at his age will do his career no good especially any European ambitions. Everyone knows that so just a negotiating ploy that will hardly rattle PG.

It’s the start of the silly season where the media have little to talk about while everyone in football is on holiday so expect more of this.

P.G would never do that to a player.

David Raya

The sooner we can get two clubs wanting to buy him the sooner that Spurs will have to get serious about offering nearer to what we want rather than what they want to pay.

David Raya

Objectively the best goalkeeper in Europe. And he plays for Brentford!

Earlier on I watched a video on YouTube of our home game vs Gillingham in 06/07. Our goalkeepers were Clark Masters and John Moushino (an outfielder). Somehow, Moushino actually appeared to be the better goalkeeper.

How times change.

David Raya

Btw, has anyone seen this before?

A very young David Raya playing for Southport and even back then, being singled out for his quality.

Has anyone else ever played for Southport and subsequently been the best in their position across all of Europe?

Couldn't save a penalty then. He's not progressed, has he? 40M my arse! ;)
