Objectively the best goalkeeper in Europe. And he plays for Brentford!

Earlier on I watched a video on YouTube of our home game vs Gillingham in 06/07. Our goalkeepers were Clark Masters and John Moushino (an outfielder). Somehow, Moushino actually appeared to be the better goalkeeper.

How times change.
Here’s the video btw. Cracking challenge from Masters for their penalty….

Callum Wilcock?

The Scunthorpe thing spawned the "name three England captains who have played for Scunthorpe" trivia question

Keegan played many first team games for Scunny. Born in nearby Doncaster. Taught by my husband’s aunt. Also took his turn driving the team mini bus to away games according to Wiki as Scunthorpe couldn’t afford a driver.
Saw him play for them at GP. 1-1 draw, night game iirc.

David Raya

I saw him play in a Saturday night game where we won 2-1 in the last minute with Alan Nelmes scoring.
KK playing at GP I accept and indeed saw. Spider scoring in the proper net I don't. He even got an og in his testimonial!

As ever thread going off topic.
Anyway I believe the club needs to keep evolving in always to keeping competing with the clubs with larger budgets. The stand off over the price of DR in football terms is ridiculous. However it is a push back on how Brentford have succeeded year on year. Remember they screwed over our brilliant plan to develop young players whilst giving them opportunities for an education and this resulted in BFC changing direction with the B team approach. Players then wanted to join us to be coached and developed ready to move on at large profit if successful. Larger clubs are not happy the aren’t recognising players early and getting them improved for free by loaning them out and of course players agents want them to leave teams like BFC at the lowest price so there is a bigger signing on fee for them to get a share of. I think the easiest quick answer is make all new signings contract have a 3 year option rather than 1 year which should not put off a keen young player but give the club more opportunity to realise the profit it deserves

That was the game I left early and missed seeing Nelmes only goal at GP. He did score when playing as a centre forward at Meadow Lane though. Another Saturday night game in that era was us losing to Brian Clough's Hartlepool. Strange KO time that.

That was a weird kick off time. Maybe for some reason QPR and Fulham were at home that day too? God knows! I remember waiting for a 65 bus in Richmond and receiving some ghastly antisemitic abuse which shook me so much I still remember it 55 years on.

I think Hartlepool was at Christmas because we’d played away there the previous day and the two teams had to travel down from up North.

Or maybe I’m taking bollox!

'tis a far cry from the old 4th division days to wondering whether our keeper is leaving for Man Utd or Spurs. Slipped through a time warp we have.

Hilarious uneducated punditry abounds (thanks @Banana for highlighting)

Likely 3 ways this plays out:

1) Spuds/Manyoo/Arse or other desperados cough up the £40m just before the summer window slams shut.

2) Nobody meets the asking price. Our finances are sufficient to maintain 2x international keepers on our books (thank you @jmf ) pushing each other to improve. Raya doubles down and ups his level for a potential January move.

3) Nobody meets the asking price. Raya has a strop refuses to train but after 3 months out of the squad realises this is self-defeating as interest from Spuds/Manyoo/Arse etc wanes and he loses his place in the Spain international squad.

David Raya

I guess the issue is whether the £40m mentioned by TF is the actual value the club place on Raya - meaning the minimum they'd accept for him. It might be we'd accept closer to £30m and avoid any potential malcontent in the squad for half a season or more.

On the bench tonight v Italy.
Asking price halved........

As has been pointed out elsewhere, no way TF would just throw a random figure out to the press.

At the time I thought it was a random, tongue in cheek, figure plucked from the air. Not sure everything said by TF has been pre-scripted, surely he is allowed to think for himself sometimes?

On some subjects yes, but on something as significant as a player value I’m pretty sure that would have been agreed before he mentioned it to the press. He’d usually be very cagey on transfer stuff. Also since the Leeds ‘scared to come to GP’ comment (or whatever it was) that backfired so badly and Marcondes similar comment pre fulham play off I’m sure we’re a lot more cautious on what is said in front of the press.

Fabrizio Romano:

David Raya: “I have ambitions to make the next step in my career. I want to try to win titles and to compete in Europe”. ⚪️ #THFC

“There are options out there but it’s not just my ambitions, the club also needs to let me go”, told Times.

Personal terms agreed with Tottenham.

Not the best choice of words....?

The club is not denying him a move. If anything PG is probably hawking Raya around more than the agent. So Raya can go when a club pays the price. End of.

David Raya

This could start to get ugly. I don't like Raya dissing our ambitions especially when it's perennial losers Spurs hoping to sign him. It would be a real shame if he feels he has to force a move by stirring up unnecessary s**t at our club. Just pay up Levy and he's yours.

There is not much Raya can do is there?

Particularly about desperate news-hounds lifting spurious quotes to mix in with their speculative nonsense to try to appear relevant!
Yes, agree. The only thing left available to Raya is to ensure he leaves with grace and dignity. He has been adequately replaced.
