Dean Smith & Transfers

This maybe a stupid question so let me know, but essentially if Deano (or anyone for that matter) was made privvy to how we collect and use stats I imagine he'd have to sign something to never copy/talk about it publicly or privately to anyone and if he did we'd end up suing him to the point he can't pay his water bill. (Obviously an extreme and unlikely event)

I'd also imagine Deano is aware of who our targets over the next 6 months to a year are and if he likes them enough would have the financial clout to beat us to them. For signings not otherwise known to the average person, would their be anything he'd of signed that would prevent him signing players found using our own methods for a brief time period, i.e. 6 months to a year if it was made clear that they were identified by us and not him?

Or is that just far fetched thinking?

No idea myself but my theory is this.
The management have some idea but not the full idea of how it works.
In terms of targets, my feeling is that targets are monitored but don't report to the management, but the DoF's. The management get involved as the target becomes closer to a reality, as the Head Coach will want a replacement/addition to his squad, discusses it with the DoF's, and then they work together to make it happen.
So, for example, Maupay gets injured. The DoF's already know what kind of player the Head Coach wants, provide him a shortlist, they then agree on the targets and then go for it.
I don't think Smith got involved in the longer term targets who are currently being monitored.
Anyway, that's what I'm hoping is the case!

I think post #2 is how it is. I’d like to think so anyway. I reckon he’ll be doing the same job at Villa, ie, Head Coach, as they’ve also appointed a Sporting Director. That generally implies limited input re: transfers & he probably won’t be added to the bank account.
The job does come with benefits though, one of which is an extra media name - Dean Smith’s Aston Villa....

Dean Smith & Transfers

You could say the same for Rosler and Warburton, look where that got them.

I wouldn’t worry or bother about DS knowing how we do things. It’s the people above him that matter. Giles, Ankersen and Rowan. If one or two of those left for a “big club” then I’d be worried.

Dean Smith & Transfers

I think Villa will demand a different mind of player anyway.

I have a pretty good idea of how we do it but I am not privy to the everyday information we gather that constantly changes.

Nothing to worry about, loads of clubs do it nowadays.

Sounds plausible to me (though that's not difficult!). I would also say that AV want instant success and will not bide their time on a player or manager. Where we bring players in to develop and nurture that often means a player does not produce his best form for up to a year - 18 months, that will not be allowed at AV, the fans will not give Deano time to do this. They will spend big and expect an immediate return.

It's not the information we gather that's the key, it's what we do with it. I doubt that Smith has got into the detail and I'm sure his eyes would glaze over with a Smartodds analyst explaining a specific causal factor to him.

Where’s all this take of Aston Villa spending loads of cash for players come from. I was under the assumption that they had little and have to sell before they buy.

Dean Smith & Transfers

With the parallel appointment of a new Sporting Director, I imagine that Smith's been told that he must get their expensive and large squad working and let the SD/DoF know who he wants to offload before any suggestion of adding players.

Dean Smith & Transfers

As has been posted elsewhere, if we're top 6 (or near enough) in January we won't sell our players. Whether to Villa or anyone else...

The summer on the other hand...

Exactly - Romaine has a year left next summer and it would be stupid not to cash in as he won't sign a new deal.

New investment. That’s how they cleared ffp. They can’t do it again for next season though.

Dean Smith & Transfers

Bottom line is we have our valuations of every player, if Smith wants to take them to Villa in January then they have to meet our asking price, same as every club

Confident the club will do what is ultimately best for the football club in the long term even if there is a short term hiatus

Obviously new owners are given some grace, but I think Villa are still under certain FFP restrictions so don't expect much movement in January...

In addition, if we are in the mix in January and MB wants to go for it, I expect our valuations to be "interestingly" high.

Personally I think Romaine could go in January. If we look to sell at peak value he will be worth less in the summer. I wonder if Smith will come in for McEachran as well. He’s only got 6 months left on his contract and Smith has always admired him.

I think the ‘crown jewels’ i.e. the likes of Mepham, Watkins, Maupay are probably safe as they won’t go to a championship club now.

I think McEachran is the one he’s most likely to come in for as he’s out of contract end of season and has the potential to be very valuable to a team like Villa with a plethora of attacking talent.

I don’t see a role for Sawyers at a team that has Grealish, unless of course they expect to sell Grealish in January. Smith will know that BFC will ask for silly money for Mepham and probably also for Konsa.

If Marcondes and Da Silva can get fit and playing well by January I don’t think we’ll worry too much if offers do come in for McEachran and Sawyers. But if he can’t get Villa playing the right way and moving up the table very soon without them I suspect Villa won’t be trusting him with the chequebook in January. And if we don’t suffer a downturn in form but instead push on to where we ought to be, were I McEachran I’d wait until the end of the season when a better deal for the linchpin of a promotion winning midfield (as his agent might put it) might be in substantial demand.

Dean Smith & Transfers

Villa don't need midfielders or forwards, they need defenders and a goalie. Barbet maybe as he's out of contract soon.

As Smith doesn’t rate him as a CB and he’s only a stand in LB I doubt Barbet would be going to Villa. Bentley has handily played himself out of being a target at just the right timd.

Sawyers has until 2020

Seems on their forum they're keen on Neal "the ****er" maupay lol. They're not content with just kodija, Abraham, Hogan and green

Maybe they should pay for Hogan first ffs !

....if i were DS/JT....I'd have Mepham and Konsa on my xmas wish list as my centreback partnership at Villa....but i wouldnt be sure santa would or could deliver.....Villa need a total re-vamp in defence.

Dean Smith & Transfers

I would have thought that he's been told to work with Jesus Garcia Pitarch, their new Sporting Director, to off-load players, rather than recruit more.

Dean Smith & Transfers

I think the original poster's concerns are redundant. Villa don't need to look for hidden value. They can and do pay top dollar for established, proven players who are capable, in their estimation, of making an immediate impact. They don't have time to develop and polish up and coming youngsters in the way we do. They need to get back to the PL now! Consequently, when it comes to recruitment, we're fishing in different ponds.

They will fish our pond but we won’t fish the same pond as they are in excess £10m pond we are up to £3m pond

There's quite an interesting piece on Villa's finances here, written just after the new owners stepped in..

It seems that they are on a very sticky wicket with regards FFP so I'd imagine their Jan transfer dealings will be very much dependent on who they can move on in the first instance. It may well mean that they might be more interested in one of our players who's contracts are up but certainly would seem to suggest that our crown jewels are well beyond their reach...

I very much doubt the likes of Meps, Konsa, Ollie and Maupay would go to Villa, they can all do a LOT better than that.

I agree, just pointing out that they may not have that option financially anyway.

He seems to be taking a lot of of peoples credit saying what great football he plays ect which was Mathew benham football philosophy all he was doing was following instructions so not his style of play, and these transfers he had nothing to do with and tarkoski was signed by the scouse fellow mr frank warburtons friend
And it is only the structure of the club and our philosophy that has got him the villa gig

It’s the same message to Villa as all other clubs, pay the asking price.

I don't believe the person who wrote the article spoke with Smith about Villa or anything else. It's part of an interview he gave about the revolving captaincy, freely available on the internet, and the rest is just made-up lies.

It's from The Sun, which is not well known for incisive journalism.

He’ll be gone from Villa before our Stadium opens.

According to the Sunday Times Villa have lost £37m in the last two FYs. The limit is £39m in three before FFP sanctions begin. So, without some sharp wheeler-dealing in January, they seem certain to exceed the limit. (And even then they'd need most or all of the incoming January revenue to be allocated to this FY).

They could gamble and go for broke in the hope that promotion would take them out of the clutches of the EFL and FFP sanctions. But that really would be reckless because failure would leave them bereft next season - a hefty fine and a probable transfer embargo. So, I would expect them to try to mitigate their losses as far as possible in January with the sale of Grealish a very high priority.

Smith will be expected to put the club on an immediate upward trajectory using some of the very promising young players they have and the still strong squad of seniors. I think he'll do OK and might well reach the play-offs. Whether that will be deemed good enough remains to be seen!

Villa didn’t get any of the boards choices so appointed someone that the fans would be happy with but if they don’t get promoted he’ll be off and Villa will be deep in the brown stuff

Dean Smith & Transfers

4/5th choice didn't bother Dean he's just got blown away by the prospect of working for John Terry's Aston Villa ?

Maybe he'll come in for Jeanvier as he needs a ball playing centre half of he wants to play out from the back.

So which one of those do you think doesn't want to treble their salary and the crowds they play in front of?
