Defending Free Kicks

Can someone that knows about these things tell me what's going on here?

JDS(?) is on the edge of the D presumably guarding against a short pass together with the 2 in the wall. Meanwhile we have 7 (SEVEN) defending 4 on the edge of the area in the space delimited by the D. Finally we have an opposition player a good 6 yards away from the nearest defender on the far side.

Why not, er, mark that player with one of the 3 "spare" defenders in the middle?

Do you have a grab a few seconds later? If Henrik had gone out to mark the guy on the right there is every chance he would have been behind him by the time the ball had arrived in the box. I think the theory there is to mark the space he will arrive in

It looks like he’s got a head start to level with the post and the penalty spot. Nearly happened too.

If we were Arsenal, we’d step forward with our arms in the air, just before the kick was taken...

We’re not, but we’re poised and ready to retreat or advance. The only defenders facing the ball full on, are the 2 in the wall. Did they score from this? No. Job done.

He had a free shot. Job was not done.

So they end up engaging Henrik with someone else leaving the guy Banana is pointing out without anyone assigned. Does look like we messed up here

Just to avoid any overcomplicated analysis...

It looks like we f***ed up, didn't mark him/track his run and got away with it.

How's that?

PS - Who's our set piece coach again?!

Defending Free Kicks

Naughty of them not to play the free kick that we had prepared for, or anticipated. Captain too involved in the general shenanigans? Give GK command for overview and final positions of markers, unless he can’t count.

Think Riemer deals with defending set pieces, however it's prob down to the captain to ensure organisation when on the pitch..

Yep. The same happened later on too. They still didn't mark him.

Every organised tactical set up will leave room for an exploit. Liverpool strolled to a league championship playing a high line and pressing but then got taken apart by Villa ruthlessly finding a way round it. We line up for long distance free kicks in a way that means we rarely concede from them but which at the cost of a very difficult to pull off direct shot being possible as unfortunately happened once, just at the wrong moment.

Looking at the replay (45 seconds in) I think there's a pretty strong argument to say Henrik was fouled off the ball trying to get to that open space. As the ball is struck, the defender looks to me to grab Henrik round the neck - Henrik then ducks to get out of the hold but it affects how quickly he gets to the space. Without that obstruction, which i think is a foul (rather than just your standard blocking that we do so well for 'The Pinnock Corner') then Henrik's angle of running shows to me he would have got there to make the simple header away. It's a split second obstruction, but without it it's a simple clearance for me.

Thanks. It's what I thought at the time and posted earlier, Henrik was blocked off as the covering defender.

yep, saw that and agree. Just think it’s more than the standard blocking you see at corners, this one’s a foul for me.

Yes that happened, but he wasn't going over there anyway and the man wrestling him was the one he was marking. The spare players were in the middle, not on the far side.

No, check your first photo again. Henrik was outside the man who you can see look at Henrik before moving over to engage him. It was a planned move by them with Henrik intended to pick up the man drifting in from the outside. A bit agricultural but very similar to what Henrik did several times for corners which Ethan won last year.

...and looking the other way. Henrik had his back to that player the entire time.

Anyway, even if you are correct then he should have known what might be coming and perhaps stand near the man in acres of space

What mark him you mean? Even my wife said who's marking that bloke at the back before the kick was taken and she hates sport and had just looked up from her copy of The Times.

Defending Free Kicks

Here's one for our set piece coach. Lyon, who are currently 1-0 up against Monaco, have just defended two free kicks by forming a wall and then employing Maxwel Cornet to lie down directly behind that wall so as to nullify the threat of a daisy-cutter should the wallers leap in the air.

Not new.
