Derek Hazel RIP

I regret to say I have the saddest news and that is that one of my best mates, of 50 years standing, has passed away.

Derek Hazel was a very special and unique guy. He gave his time, energy and dedication in droves in support of the Club he loved. Whether it was working behind the bar in the old social club at Griffin Park back in the eighties, selling away coach tickets and answering the Club phones on match days or working long hours as Treasurer bookkeeping for the Brentford Lifeline Society, he gave his all and, I should add, in a voluntary capacity.

His life, like many others, was Brentford Football Club. In many respects Brentford Football Club was his family.

Sadly, medical problems limited his time to supporting the Club in person over the past year but his every thought was about Brentford whenever we spoke.

He was admitted to Hospital in April of this year, and apart from a short period of time spent in a care home, his final days were spent in hospital where he died peacefully late yesterday (Monday) afternoon.

He will be sorely missed by those who knew him. At some point over the forthcoming festive period, please raise your class and drink a toast to my old mate…..Derek Hazel!

Derek was a loyal fan home and away as long as I can remember.
Away travel was so easy to book up when I was on the coaches in my schooldays.
?gentleman.

It really does mate. He was always so patient & helpful with us too. That is very sad news. I was just thinking about him yesterday. Brentford legend. Rest in peace Derek.

A close personal friend of mine and was so sad to hear this tragic news. As Peter said he lived for Brentford and did many jobs on a voluntary basis and always did them with a smile on his face. Over the years we travelled the length and breadth of the country watching the Bees and I am glad he got to see us in the Premier League after all those journeys to Workington, Barrow and Hartlepool.

We went on many USA Lifeline holidays over the years and he always made people feel at home and relaxed. We knew each other for over 50 years and he was always there if you needed a chat or a cup of tea but due to his health deteriorating in the past year he could not get out and about as he would have liked.
There are many people at Brentford who will have known Derek and I am sure this will come as a big shock as despite his failing health he was in good spirits when I spoke to him last week.

Thankyou for being a help when I needed it and always willing to help others - you will be sadly missed.

Rest in peace my dear friend.

Sad news and thanks for letting the rest of us know, Peter. We were lucky enough to win the Lifeline holiday in 1991, and Derek helped to make it such an amazing, memorable experience - a genuinely kind man with a wicked sense of fun. After that we'd always say hello at whatever godforsaken place we were away at. The club we all love would not have survived without volunteers like Derek, he did so much in the days when we didn't have a bucket to piss in. Sorry to hear that he had such a long illness, but hope that he can now rest in peace - sincere condolences to his family and close friends.

Very sad news.
Remember him way back as one of the ‘grown ups’ when we were being very silly on away trips back in the day. Has been a constant ever since and always said hello. He gave so much to BFC and it’s supporters so I hope he is fittingly remembered.

Such sad news. Lovely man and a Brentford fixture. He was Brentford through and through. Like others always remember him from away games back in the day and his after game stints selling match tickets in that small room /office at the back of the stands in Braemar Road. Like another sad loss recently (Bill the fish) someone who was friendly and easy to talk to. He will be sadly missed. RIP Derek.

Oh no very sad. Another face I remember from way back around GP and on away trips. Another face so familiar to me (never really put names to them or even remember now) over the years that I keep thinking sadly I hadn't seen around for a while.
