Allen gambles on scallywag DJ
By Tony Flood
Brentford manager Martin Allen has turned to the man who spearheaded Yeading's outstanding FA Cup run last season in a bid to solve the Bees' scoring woes.
The signing of DJ Campbell, whose impressive form in the Ryman Premier League earned him an England Non-League debut for an international in Ireland two weeks ago, will hopefully improve Brentford's goals tally after they finished with the worst goal difference among the top 13 teams in League One last term.
The move continues Allen's policy of delving into non-league football and he could also strengthen his midfield.
But Jamaican World Cup star Paul Hall, 32, with whom Brentford had been linked, looks likely to join Bristol City after failing to agree a new deal at Tranmere.
The Brentford boss said: "I have agreed the signing of DJ Campbell from Yeading on the recommendation of my trusted lieutenant John Griffin.
"DJ is a centre-forward who has been prolific in non-league soccer and I am going to take a gamble in the hope that he can deliver at this level."
Allen, who this week left for a holiday with his wife, added: "I am close to other deals being completed.
"Adrian Whitbread, John Griffin and Andy Finch have all the details on all the deals that are happening.
"If there are any problems I am contactable while I'm away. However, for my own well-being I do need a break before returning to Warwick University on the UEFA pro licence course."
Allen described Campbell, who walked out on Aston Villa as a youngster, as "a scallywag with whom I expect to have a love-hate relationship".
Yeading will receive a small transfer fee which could increase, depending on goals and appearances, for a player who has scored 83 times in 109 appearances in the last two seasons.
Yeading manager Johnson Hippolyte said: "We are not going to stand in a player's way, asking for money that isn't there, so we just have to hope Campbell does well and makes us a bit of cash eventually."
Brentford expect Scott Fitzgerald Jnr, signed from Watford for an undisclosed fee on transfer deadline day in March after an initial loan spell, and his new strike partner to solve their scoring problem.
Goal-shy Brentford had a minus three goal difference last season after scoring only 57 and conceding 60 last season in stark contrast to the club immediately below them, Sheffield Wednesday, whose 77-59 difference was the springboard to them winning the play-offs.
Allen said: "That is an area we need to strengthen and I will be bringing in players who can improve our attacking play."
He is hoping Fitzgerald can repeat the scoring form he showed in non-league prior to joining Watford in March 2003 he hit 105 goals in 236 games for Northwood.
In addition to getting an out-and-out striker who is capable of grabbing 20 goals double that of last season's departing top scorer Deon Burton Allen also needs a left-winger to take over from John Salako, another of the seven given free transfers by Brentford.
Allen is looking for players who can raid more quickly down the flanks and get in telling crosses.
The first of those should be attacking left-back Sam Tillen from Chelsea reserves, who has represented England at Under 16, 17, 18 and 19 level.
The 20-year-old Tillen has signed a one-year deal for Brentford with an option for a second year.
Allen has also agreed a contract extension with utility man Kevin O'Connor that means he is now signed up with the Bees for two years.
Changes in transfer regulations mean all players must be signed by August 6 just over a month after Brentford return to training on July 1.
