Does the perfect Manager exist?

So I'm looking at the local thread furore and opinion posted about any potential new manager especially the why's and the wherefore's of Mad Dog's managerial ability. At the same time I'm listening to what's going on at the FA with regards the new England Manager and the likely appointment of Capello. Again here's a manager who seems to attract varying opinion because, like footballers ,managers never seem to come as a complete package. Whilst you might get a manager who can motivate a side and do well in the transfer market, fans decry his inability to engage with the media, his tactics, his apparent loyalties etc etc.

So does anyone know of ONE all rounder manager in the modern game who has everything? I'm not asking you to name the best man for the Bees job I'm asking is there such a thing as a perfect manager?

Arsene Wenger is probably the closest in my opinion

Not sure it's about having the perfect manager in all honesty, but having a manager who knows their own strengths and weeknesses and can bring in backroom staff that fill in the gaps. At Brentford's level though, a backroom staff will usually be fairly minimal so probably the 'best' manager is one who has fewest deficiencies in their own ability or who has a regular assistant manager who together are the perfect package.

Does the perfect Manager exist?

It's a good question, it's such a fine line and timing is everything.

The manager who has experience of firefighting and battling relegation in lower leagues may never be any good at building a team to challenge at the other end of the table or higher up.......Ian Atkins springs to mind

Nowadays, even the best tacticians/coaches have a shelf life as wellas journeymen as it appears that as clubs evolve frequently the managers no longer are the right fit, with the odd notable exception like Ferguson and Wenger.

The perfect manager at the top of he Prem like Wenger would I imagine flop at div 4 level if he joined now and was told no money or time to build a team capabkle of challenging, keep us out of blue square.

Likewise it's unlikely that the young up and coming British managers, unless ex Internationals could go into a prem club and command the fans and shareholders respect or cope with the players demands and ego's.

So in summary, there are perfect profiles for managers and examples at different levels but I'm not sure if a perfect manager for all eventualities.

Does the perfect Manager exist?

The same Alex Ferguson who refuses to talk on BBC for a good few years now over something that happened a good few years ago?

Next.
brentford fans care more about media coverage than success. qed.

you say that, but evidence suggests otherwise if the posts on this site are much to go by.

Petulant attitude to other managers, referees, blaming everyone but his own team, when they lose.....he's up there with Fergie and Big Sam.

I really don't think that's correct PB

I'd go with Paul Fairclough :sorted:

i think i might retire from all this.

Dario Gradi would fit this bill for me. Total football manager taking a holistic approach involving youth development all the up to the first team.

Does the perfect Manager exist?

Brentford fans don't expect perfection but we don't expect or deserve humiliation. The perfect manager doesn't exist I'm afraid, Wenger's football is as near to perfect that I have seen whereas Paisley's Liverpool was as close to a perfect winning machine.
There is too much money in football nowadays for perfection to exist, the players aren't hungry enough as how do you motivate a 21 year old multi-millionaire?

.................no.................

IMO the only thing the manager needs to worry about are results and winning things, promotions, cup runs, etc. All the rest is fluff. Don't care if he's not good with the media, don't care if he doesn't speak English well, don't care if he's got a bad case of body odour.

Winning is what it's all about, and in that case, Capello has got just about the perfect resume as far as I am concerned. And I hope he takes England to new and unprecedented hieghts of not losing to nations who's total population is less than the city of London.

Wenger is the best club manager in the world, as far not blaming his own team, that's rubbish, after the defeat at Boro last week he said the better team on the day won. When interviewed Wenger and Fergie will always support their players, what they do behind closed doors is something else.

Compare the records of Wenger and Fergie, and immediately you'll see he isnt.

as far not blaming his own team, that's rubbish, .

Do you ever watch post match interviews ?
All top managers ever do is complain about match officials and make sly digs at the opposition when they lose...the exceptions are Coppell, Bobby Robson..er....

When they have a girlfriend called Coleen who will spend it like its going out of fashion...quite easily I'd say:)

What about Shankly, Paisley and Brian Clough.....

Managers tend to be really successful in one team and at one period in time when all things combine to bring success.

A few buck the trend like Coppell and I hope the new England Manager but most struggle to reach the same heights once they have moved on.

The sensible ones like Wenger, Ferguson and Gradi stay put as they know they were destined to manage that club at that time and would probably never do as well elsewhere...not necessarily fail but never quite as good.

I always thought that when MA was here we needed him and he needed us in how he was able to manage and operate, to an extent it was getting close to a very good match if not as perfect match as it could be. If he had realised that and not tried to repeat his success elsewhere maybe he could have done a Gradi here. I'd wager he will not find such popularity and success and match elsewhere. Whether he could come back and find it again is debatable.

We've probably got as many excellent managers on the UK now as we have had contemporaneously in the past. Three or four excellent managers in the UK:

Wenger, who seems to have been behind a set up that keeps producing quality players from nowhere, Jose Mourinho and Martin O'Neill.

Ferguson possibly also for what he achieved at Aberdeen more than at United - he turned Aberdeen around without huge financial backing. Walter Smith is another top class one (and I say that as a Celtic fan).

The most greats at oe time I can recall in the past was three - Paisley/Shankly, Clough and Stein.
