Shocked to see that it is to close and probably be pulled down as part of Sheffield City Councils' spending cuts. Running costs of £700k a year are a lot but surely there is a way to keep such a very good resource for athletics open, it was only bult in 1991.

Indeed. I thought it might become something like 'The Adidas Jess Enis Stadium' or Olay or some other company that already pays HER loads.

I wonder how hard the city council have tried to get sponsorship or partnership to off-set the costs? It does show that local authorities are not really capable or should be running such facilities that are more national or regional, it's hard to burden the local taxpayers with it.

Indeed. Only yesterday I was doing the Mobot down Walton High Street and everyone looked at me like a right ****.

Cycling is the only Olympic "buzz sport" which is still being consistently hammered in the television sports news. To me, the legacy that has been set by this Olympics for the younger generation is that you go out, train hard, win medals . . . then at your first opportunity, go on TV appearing in adverts and talent shows.

Not so sure about that. Our Crystal Palace diamond event tickets have been cancelled for this July as the whole thing is being moved to the Olympic stadium where I guess they expect a two day sellout plus a sell out Para event on the Sunday. The Don Valley was always a financial folly and has cost the ratepayers big time but to pull the whole thing down is incredible.

There surrounding area to the stadium looked pretty grim, the pub we used was very run down , no TV and only a few chairs, the whole area needs Redevelopment

There will ne no Olympic Legacy - That was a very nice catchphrase to mug the taxpayer and pour more money into Coe's pockets.

Take a trip to the Olympic Statdium now - First signs of decay are already evident around the exterior.

The Don Valley is a sh*t hole and doesn't generate any money. It deserves to close.

I was amazed to read it opened in 1991. If thats true who ever designed it must have come from a very out of date and cheap agency as its an eye sore.

People talk about an olympic legacy but on this occassion its being used as a buzz word. An Olympic legacy shouldnt mean that we waste money maintaining an out of date stadium but wisely invest it on the right development projects/developments.

I have a very different experience, my daughter is involved in a sport that was at the Olympics and at a junior level the club has never been busier with loads of enthusiastic youngsters training several times a week and competitions all round the country, including the upcoming London Youth Games.

Which is how it should be. If only Barking and Dagenham Council saw it that way. They will be first borough in 30 years to not send a team.
