Dynamic Pricing

Dynamic Pricing

Already been in place for the first two home games, It's experimental at the moment, for the first half dozen or so home matches, after which they'll see.

The way the season has started, they may have to start revising the prices dynamically downwards.

I think other clubs are planning to implement this year, including Betis and Atlético among others.

Dynamic Pricing

I approve of this initiative if it means the cheapskates could see their way to giving us a couple of quid for Sergi Canos.

Dynamic Pricing

Considering I've seen empty seats when the likes man utd and Liverpool have visited, maybe flogging tickets at a reduced price as time goes on would be more of an incentive.

Dynamic Pricing

It's supposedly a deterrent to touts as there is less and less value in it for them as prices increase. It's clearly just another way of fleecing your average punter (or ensuring your average punter can't even get a ticket -not affordable).

Surely the Government just need to make it illegal to sell tickets above their face value, possibly with a reasonable admin fee for the ticket agency, etc. - and if that then needs a regulator, so be it. Stop touts and make tickets available to those they are intended for.

The issue I had with oasis was the lack of transparency prior to sales opening more than anything else. Was just really snidey.

Dynamic Pricing

If this was introduced at Brentford then i would walk.
Even the thought of it is a sickener.
I know it happens on airlines,Hotels and trains, but not on buses or taxis and i think it is wrong all day long.

Dynamic Pricing

Think the crucial word, with @rebus used, is transparency.

Ticketmaster may argue that for it to be financially viable between them and the acts they represent, they have to factor in ‘dynamic pricing’ when compiling revenue forecast.

The answer to that though would surely be to factor that into your starting price. I don’t think people would be angrier at paying £200 to start than seeing an initial price of £150 morph into £400. Again transparency. And if sales fall, well like a lot of businesses, need to come up with new ‘ethical’ incentives.

Comparing pricing and ticketing for single events with universal appeal as opposed to fortnightly football home games is tricky enough. One can only assume Valencia have been unable to sell sufficient numbers of season tickets perhaps?

P.S. I still wince when I see people say ‘ now that the super league has been put to bed’. I’m not so sure we won’t see a similar proposition to come.

Good post. At Griffin Park, there was a form of dynamic pricing where the commercial manager used to hold back a limited amount of hospitality ticket for a big game then release them near to matchday and charge more for them.

Maybe not black cabs but Uber uses “surge” pricing, which is the same thing, albeit that you can see the price before you book.

Obviously topical because of the Oasis shows.

It's a false comparison to compare football matches or gigs with other places that you see it - Uber taxis, air fares, and then try and justify it

Uber's model encourages drivers to go to a busy area so supply actually increases when demand increases - there's no similar counter-force for concert tickets where there is a fixed supply - it's just charging more because they think someone will pay it.
Air fares might shoot up but there's genuine competition between airlines and airports to provide difference services. Trains don't have proper competition by and large, but you will probably get the 7am train instead of the 9am train if you want to save £20, the reward is similar.
People won't go and see Dua Lipa instead when Oasis was too expensive - they want to go and see Oasis because they are a massive Oasis fan and nothing else will suffice.

Bringing all of THAT into football - where loyalty means everything - makes me feel ill even thinking about it. We want to go and watch our team, not the one "the market" decides we can afford to attend that day.

If you somehow accepted there was a designated block of tourist tickets at every ground in London I could imagine this working on some kind of league(s) wide platform - "Arsenal is currently £150, West Ham is £90, QPR is £20 - what do you fancy seeing, Mr Tourist?" just like you were comparing a menu of West End shows. But for regular football fans - let's hope nobody goes anywhere near it. And hopefully with ticket income being a relative small percentage of total income let's hope they are not too greedy to get involved in an avoidable PR war over it.

I did not know that, but i have never booked an Uber i must admit.
We had meters in our cars and that was what people paid and we had to take the shortest route or a fixed price agreed on booking
I got in a cab last Friday to come home and its a tenner normally.
The fella who picked us up charged me £15 so i experienced Dynamic Pricing in a funny kind of way.
He got a tenner and a polite lesson in dont take the piss out of a bloke who is a bit more streetwise than the average punter.

Uber became popular partly on the basis it was cheap - though the price has crept up in recent years.

But if you are in a busy area as the pubs are kicking out or when an event ends, it will tell you the current price is 1.5x the usual price, or 2x the price, due to demand, and you can decide whether you want to book or not.
Drivers can also see on their screens where the current surge areas are. They get attracted to head for that area to earn those higher fares, but once enough drivers are in the area the surge reduces.

I recall a black cabbie online reporting with glee that they were cheaper than Uber for many people on a rail strike day - because their rates are fixed.

It’s the very definition of dynamic pricing.

It's pretty obvious to everyone that these tickets would be in high demand and to say they get more expensive because more people are buying is complete BS. They did the same for Bruce Springsteen and Taylor Swift, huge acts who will always have demand to see them, if they want to charge £400 for a ticket then say so at the beginning. Another thing that pees me off is they don't advertise how much tickets will be when announcing the shows, you never see, tickets on sale Friday, prices ranging from £80 to £250, at least then you can make a decision if you want to sit in a queue for three or four hours or not.

I thought the prices were advertised as £150 to stand etc but if people pay it what can you do. I personally think it's madness if someone has paid hundreds of pounds for this gig or any

They may well have been but many times I've waited to buy tickets at 10 o'clock in n the morning only to get through to select tickets to find out they are far more expensive than i would be willing to pay.
It's just greedy companies and individuals who despite their wealth still want more to stuff under their mattresses, look at the Grenfell enquiry, PPE during covid, Thames water and energy suppliers and numerous others stuffing their coffers.

Dynamic Pricing

No they did not. TS opted out of using it.
It is the artist’s choice for the big gigs and whatever they might say as the Oasis reunion is all about the money I don’t believe for a second they were against it.

It has less allure for less popular gigs other than to send the pricing the other way to below face value to fill the venue. US Sports tickets are often resales of STs working on dynamic pricing and that’s why they can be ludicrously cheap.

regarding @heebeegeebee 's second point.

No price info was advertised or available until the first pre-sale started on the Thursday (?), when people could actually log on and see the prices.
Ticketmaster used to show price categories that would be available before sales opened a few years ago - no longer, it seems.

In terms of whether it's fair price, yes I agree if people pay it there is not much room to tell them they are charging the wrong price. Bands also have loyal fans but I'd suggest not in the same way as football clubs - they have a new group of loyal fans to play to every night, on tour and it makes little difference to them whether young people or working class people were priced out, unfortunately.

Many gigs and festivals sell out at high prices but there's been people who have got it wrong. Girls Aloud had to sell unsold tickets for 50% off this year because not enough people wanted to pay £100+ to see them at an arena show. Shows in Hyde Park (pre covid anyway) often did giveaways to make sure the venue is full and the bars are busy. Not for Bruce Springsteen etc, but for smaller bands where they got demand/initial pricing wrong. There is a limit to what people will bear, price wise.

Yep. I’ll be dangling Varney over the top of the Gtech if he even thought about it.
You’ll have to fish him out of the Thames first

I use Uber a fair bit, and yes if its poring down with rain or peak times the price goes up but not to Dick Turpin prices, The advantage is you see the price before you press OK, it then gives you the simple choice of do I, or don't I, very simple as there is no price rise one ordered, Never had a problem with them, cars are always clean and drivers polite.

Dynamic Pricing

Hideous idea that hopefully will be met with the same distane the Super League thing did from fans
Aren’t we already using it by only charging £10 v Orient?!

Dynamic Pricing

This is such a horrible idea and has put me off oasis a lot. Working class heroes my arse, stitching us fans up like that. Gutted not to get a ticket but can’t pay £350. What percentage of the tickets were sold before the prices were hiked up - I thought it was just the last 10% where the price doubled but not many people seem to have paid *only* £150?!

Has put me off marriage too if it costs £20 million to get a divorce!! Who can afford that either?!

Dynamic Pricing

The cheapest tickets on the scalping websites for one of the gigs are £630 each - if people are willing to pay that then surely that's the market value and no consumers have been ripped off? But I do agree about the no notice of prices.

Whereas something like Oasis at Wembley is nakedly commercial, I agree that if it came to football it'd be pretty reprehensible - hopefully Oasis have done everyone a favour by showing how unpopular it is

Dynamic Pricing

i wonder what dynamic pricing would have done to those chilly afternoon/evening games in league 1 and 2. How cheap can we go? Does it bring more people in? Are we still making a loss
When there's a limited number of loyal fans, something tells me dynamic pricing wouldn't be mentioned.

Yes, but you can level the “market value” excuse to football as well. £350 for a standing ticket is a rip off - you know that and so do I. People have lost their senses with what sort of profit these band members should actually get in a cheque. Even £2m for the U.K. leg should be enough - not £20m. Noel Gallagher will be able to sell his publishing rights next year for £250m so these prices are just a pure scam.

The other factor is how many tickets were available at £150? No one knows, and no one will get to know.

The music industry is inherently shady. How does the artist really know how many sales from their record companies factory or digital server have taken place? They rely on honestly (or lack of) from the label. People have been ripped off left right and centre.

It reminds me of a chat with an author who caught out his publisher trying to print extra copies of his book without his knowledge, trying to evade him receiving royalty payments.

If you don’t regulate the free market in some way or form it becomes a disaster.

Apologies to Taylor, i know ticketmaster got a lot of bad press for the handling of tickets for her Eras tour but you get the gist of my post?

Dynamic Pricing

Just as a matter of interest the NHL uses dynamic pricing. Not that it bothers me. I can't afford the tickets at non dynamic prices.

Dynamic Pricing

You can have an issue with dynamic pricing if you are left wing and for it if you are right wing politically. Anything else requires a bit of mental dissonance.

Political thread alert.

Non politically. One could follow the French anthropological model or the American. Or be mentally dissonant.

Has the club (or TicketMaster) now introduced dynamic pricing for home games? My daughter can occasionally get to games and tried to get a last minute ticket yesterday. A small number were available but at crazy prices: £150 plus. I checked Fulham tickets last night and there were a couple available at one end of the South Stand for £125 each.

Where are you buying them from, the club directly, the exchange or a third party?

Dynamic Pricing

Might have been premium tickets? South Stand has all the la-di-da stuff

Unless you have screenshots (more clues), maybe @Banana or @hobbsy or @AB will know more? Pretty sure there's no dynamic pricing involved but, not 100%

From the club's website. I wondered whether they were premium seats of some sort, but their position in the stand made this unlikely, I think.
Premium i believe.

Plus i dont think the exchange is open for Fulham yet.

Regularly see those sort of process on the ticket site before the exchange opens.

If they were in s200 or 300 blocks you were buying a premium ticket with lounge access.
Unsurprisingly these are usually the ones slowest to disappear on the exchange

As far as I’m aware if these are being sold through the club they can only be premium seats being resold at their face value. But if there are further mark ups being applied we need to know about it to take up with the club.

Agree, should not be adding additional cost to these tickets IMO.

I'm sure if a GA ticket was being sold to others for profit our ST would be cancelled quicker then a Kayode run from right back to left wing.
