I know its mentioned elsewhere but lost which thread it was in.

Seems the FL clubs voted for it but didnt have much choice.

from the little i understand, it seems:
1) 'small' clubs were told funding would be cut/stopped if we didn't agree to the changes...
2) we get a higher subsidy but then much much much lower transfer fees for young players...
not sure it seems fair... quelle surpise?

Pro's and Con's it seems, typical bullying approach by the Premiership i.e. do what we say or we will cut you loose. On the other had when did we last sell a youth player on for any decent money, in fact have we ever struck such a deal? so maybe it is no big deal for us?

But MB is putting millions into building new youth facilities and a new academy . It could be argued what's the ****ing point if some Premiershite club can just grab them for peanuts.

one quick answer: developing League 1 ability players. Premiership scouts won't be (as) interested in those, and we don't produce many of them these days :shrug:

but overall yes, it doesn't sound too great :sad:

MW is preparing a paper for the BFC board and whilst I'll probably be gone by then I should think that the official site and/or future programme could carry some sort of statement on where we are at and how if at all this affects our future plans. The discussions that I have had over the past ten days is that with MB's continued financial backing we will move up the Category ladder and be in an extremely favourable position for a presently League One club. I had been asking a few questions because I thought that this was sure to come up at last weeks Fans Forum but it didn't.

Obviously I'm sure the decision makers @bfc knew this was on the horizon when setting up our own ambitious plans re. Dev squad and academy. Therefore the pros of such investment must outweigh the cons but interested in how much its expected to impact on us.

If we produce a 16 year old superstar or are in the position MK Dons are in when they have or are in the process of selling a 14 year old for megabucks it can only be bad for us as the max you can get for a 16 year old seem to be around £170k....

On another note a mate told me who was at a Crewe game last week that about 20 players in there squad all came through their youth academy and this info came from the match programme, fantastic if thats true

They have been churning them out for years and is the main reason they have such a quality academy up there.

I think the EPPP is bad news for football as Barry Fry said yesterday to the BBC. Be interesting to see how Brentford manage with this handicap, love the idea of home grown players gracing GP but the powers of the game seem to make it as hard as posible for all clubs to develop young talent.

Could the football league not create their own youth league with no Premier league clubs that is played behind closed doors? Would make it very hard for top teams to scout.

Also whats the age limit before a club can charge what they want for a player under these new rules?

Could we benefit from it? Say we have a top youth academy in the coming years, surely we could attract the best youth players from league 2 or even 1 and not pay over the top?

Behind closed doors means exactly that and we don't have to allow scouts from other clubs in to watch players we are trialling.

How do think this will end abee? It seems too good to be true. I feel it will end in tears but do you believe they can make the Prem before it goes Pete Tong? Seems like they will have a very inconsistent squad which isnt a good platform for success.

Nice for an agent to care so much for a clubs fans. Thought it weird the amount of hasbeens linked with Donny. They've clearly gone from a progressive club punching way above their weight to one agent's experiment to make himself even more obscenely rich than he already is.

While it could go up to £1.3m, I think the initial payment should be more - as it stands, if his career stalls because of failures by the bigger club, then Northampton end up with next to nothing. A starting cost of perhaps £250k would be nothing to a Prem team, but a lot to one in Lge 2

In all honesty he is more likely to get a career in football by going to Everton and getting loaned out to the likes of Northampton at 18 than he would if he stayed at Northampton. Would be good to see statistics of current footballers plying a trade in the 4 divisions and where they got their first pro contract. I doubt there is many from Northampton but more from Everton.

If we relate this to Brentford, it is clear that the days of players coming up from lower and non-league clubs or making a decent career after starting in park football are very limited, just look at our squad. Going into academy football at a Cat A or Cat B Academy, even as late at 15 or 16, will provide a technical and academic education he's not going to get elsewhere. It will give him a much improved chance of being a better footballer and earning more over a short football career.
