Ellery Balcombe

May as well start threads for the B Team now as some players have one already.

I see Ellery has been chosen for the England U-20's Toulon Tournament (for those players not chosen for the U-20's WC in South Korea)

Usually a good tournament for young footballers. Ellery has certainly climbed the England ladder quickly. Good luck to him.

I think he has a bright future and hope we can sign him up for longer.

Made some good saves the other day. I may say he dived too early a couple of times as he thought the shot was going elsewhere (one he saved, one was the 4th goal), however he's 19 and that's something that I'm sure will improve. A good prospect though! The more recognition for the B-Team the better prospect signing for us will seem.

Ellery Balcombe

He's still 17 years old, iirc, not 19 just yet!

Only 17 isnt he?

Ellery Balcombe

Quite right....even better then :sorted:

Ellery Balcombe

For 17 he's a huge prospect. Physically he looks like a Professional keeper already, and his distribution/shot stopping is already league standard.

However, he needs the next few years to develop the other side of his game before he can be a proper backup at Championship level - awareness, positioning, decision making etc.

Agreed. Will need a loan next season maybe?

Ellery Balcombe

Think he's at the point where he needs a couple years out of the limelight working with Royce and the first team keepers.

Agreed. Too early to loan out. A few more years learning under Royce first.

Ellery Balcombe

If Bonham goes out on loan next season he could well be a regular on the bench.

Ellery Balcombe

Ellery Balcombe

Can't see him figuring in the first team squad for a good few seasons yet and if Bonham does go out on loan, the club would surely sign direct competition for Benters.

Ellery Balcombe

Not so sure as if Bonham leaves on loan and Balcombe sits on the bench, given he has yet to play a first team game we could bring in a loan keeper if necessary to replace an injured or even suspended Bentley.

can't sign anyone on loan Sept-Dec, or after Jan 31st

do emergency loans still exist? would we still qualify given that, despite his inexperience, he's clearly seen as one of England's best young keepers?

and what if Bentley gets sent off during a game? :suspect:

You can sign a keeper if you don't have one who's played more than a couple of first team games. Of course Balcombe would have to play the remainder of a game in which Bentley goes off.

Ellery Balcombe

Good enough/old enough etc. I can't see it being a problem in itself for the young man. He's been playing with the bigger boys for a while now. Monday proved that too as Man C. were possibly up to 5/6 years older than him. Promotion to the bench for some games certainly seems on the cards, with Bonham being touted in local papers all over the country...

I expect Simon has a plan. I think he's done a great job over several years, having had my doubts before when we let seemingly decent keepers leave.

As long as Simons plan doesn't include putting on his own gloves again! The GPG game gave him a taste.......

thanks - it just seems that if we wouldn't trust him for more than an emergency sub appearance, we might as well sign (loan) someone more experienced / competent for sitting on the bench. i'd go the other way personally, although if Bentley got injured, relying on a 17yo for 2 months (say) could be dicey!!

Ellery Balcombe

Who was on the bench the times Bonham was injured? Is he still around?

Ellery Balcombe

that Kurasik guy? looks like he's out of contract end of year tho...

Ellery Balcombe

He may be only 17 but he has the build and maturity of someone a couple of years older so maybe the club will go with him as backup keeper but remembering what happened to Bonham when he was thrust into the limelight at a very early age maybe we will go for anther signing. Frankly I would expect some PL club to make a bid for Balcombe before too long as he looks a real prospect.

Ellery Balcombe

Kurasik was on the bench for 3 games and Balcombe for 1 game.

Ellery Balcombe

Gets a call up to the England U-19 squad

Ellery Balcombe

Is he ready to be number 2 or need another year in the b team or loaned?

He could probably be number 2 but I don't think there's a need. Keep him learning out of the spotlight where one mistake could see his confidence plumment.

He won't get games on our bench, better to keep him playing for us. The B Team programme is quite good, I think, but it may depend of what we do with our permanent "triallist".

Ellery Balcombe

Balcombe starts in goal for England u-19’s.

Ellery Balcombe

Given England's keeper crisis to quote the papers won't Bentley get a shout?

I’d say he will be behind the four selected as well as Heaton and Forster so fairly unlikely at this stage.

Angus Gunn in the U21s is also probably ahead of him by virtue of he youth international experience

Ellery Balcombe

Angus Gunn has now chosen to represent Scotland at full international.

Ellery Balcombe

I heard it on the radio yesterday. Unless i was hallucinating (which is not unlikely).

He's only English because his dad was playing for Norwich. Kasper Schmeical is just as English as Gunn.

Ellery Balcombe

Danger must be that a PL club snaps up EB as a squad member on big wages.

You’re right.

Clubs will often have an English 2nd keeper to help fill their homegrown quota.

So cheap, solid, high potential England youth international will appeal. If he’s the real deal he needs a big contract, though that’s easier said than done.

Ellery Balcombe

That’s crazy. He’s already been called up to the full England squad and he still chose Scotland? Mad

Unless he knows in his heart of hearts he ain't good enough for England with the other 4-5 keepers we have.
