Expectations low but been impressed with Southgate and his willingness to make pretty brave decisions and ditch the old guard on mass.
I really hope he doesn't compromise and settle for "no disgrace" in coming second in group and going out in last 16.
I'd rather get hung for a sheep as a lamb and just go for broke, play the kids and tell them to play as they do in training and see what happens.
Kane, Rashford, Alli and even Sterling are capable of changing games and so we always have a chance of scoring.
I'm predicting last 4 if we go for it but if we try and get a blend and include Milner, Hart, Smalling or Jones it's inevitable we'll go out with a whimper narrowly losing against teams we could have beaten.
Fortune favours the brave

I think we'll be pretty crap to watch for most games, but will work our way into the semis. Results are all that matters so I can put up with some bland football as long as we stick the ball in the opposition net more times than it goes in ours :sorted:

Shelvey?! in or out?

In, every day of the week, and second name on the team sheet assuming if he plays well in the warm up friendlies.
We need as many game-changers in the team as possible - let's go for it.
:banghead: if I have to watch another Dier-Henderson central midfield masterclass
But Southgate is too cautious and won't take the risk.

In, he's a fruit loop but capable of special and if he stays on the park can see him causing teams all sorts of problems.

He seems to have an "I don't give a toss" attitude, as in I don't think the pressure will get to him or change the way he plays. I think that would be welcome.

Agree, I fear refs will be looking for him and other sides cheats targeting him but he is exciting and like you say has an arrogance or confidence that on its day is what may make a positive difference. Journeymen haven't won us anything ever so leave them on the bench.

Southgate needs to be brave and choose a squad of 23 with exciting talent included and looking beyond 2018. However, I can see the usual mob being selected, through to the last 16 - hopefully - and failing, again. Hope I’m wrong and England do themselves proud and get to, at least, the semi-finals. Prove us wrong.

Without a shadow of a doubt he would be targeted, as Rooney was by Portugal a few years ago and Beckham further back by the Argies. Gazza was a loose cannon, look at his tackle in the 1991 FA Cup, however he could change things.
For the record I am not comparing Shelvey with Gazza in terms of ability. :)
However if it was between him and Henderson/Dier I know who I would choose.
Safe players in my opinion will win us nothing, we need something different. I wonder if Southgate will be brave enough...How does the quote go? "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result"

Reading all the press it sounds like he is OUT.

Hendo and Dier it is then

Dier will be in for CB cover. Assuming Wilshire goes he would naturally partner either Dier or Henderson to give us more creativity.

England World Cup Progress

In the last two internationals we played 3 CBs and 1 holding midfielder. So I think it will be Henderson or Dier in the starting 11 unless Dier plays at CB.

Both might play from the Belgium game onwards, but the first two games I think we might see a more attacking player next to Henderson

Joe Hart has been told he will not be in the squad.

Wow - not sure this is a great idea. If he was a third choice goalkeeper then he would be unlikely to be involved at all in any matches, but his general tournament experience could be quite useful. The likelihood that Pope - or whoever it is as 3rd choice - will get any game time would be minimal, and might therefore not add much to the wider squad.

Shelvey is at his best as a creative, passing midfielder, and so a very different player from Dier, who was a CB before he was converted to holding midfielder. Henderson is somewhere in between the two.

I might be inclined to give Shelvey a go, at least if the alternative is Wilshere, who too often flatters to deceive (imo). As to which of the other two might play alongside him, Henderson has got more experience, but Dier was one of the few (the only?) England player who did OK at Euro2016.

The problem with picking Shelvey (aside from temperament) is that if Southgate picks Kane, Alli, Sterling and maybe Rashford, then he might be advised to play both Henderson and Dier, to stiffen the midfield and shield the back four, which would leave no room for Shelvey.

(Re CTBee's post #18, I personally don't think Southgate's got the CB's to play 3 at the back, either 3-4-3 or 3-5-2. And I'm not sure about using Walker in a back three against the very best opposition)

on the other hand, he might sulk at his diminished status, whereas Pope or whoever (Bentley  ) would be excited to be there :)

Genuinely curious if Lallana is in. He is pretty much our most creative and intricate player, his injuries have been a really blow, but I almost think its worth taking him anyway now he's fit (although not match fit)

It isnt like Rooney or Becks who were mistakenly brought back too early from injury , as they were going to start every game, but Lallana would be great to bring on with 20 minutes to go.

I don't think he comes across as sulky - he's dealt very well with not being first choice at Man City and hasn't seemed to have kicked up a fuss at any point. In fact I seem to recall Pep stating how professional he's been throughout.

ok. but "might". and they've decided that way. so

That's because he's on a nice contract until next summer and knows the only way is down for him...a remarkably fast decline in career at a young age for a keeper....

You're right, no point discussing anything at all, ever, once a decision has been made about it

i presented a very valid counter-point. you don't know that you're right. and the decision made kinda implies that you MIGHT not be. chill winston.

I never understand this tournament experience thing.......why would you want to bring experience of making mistakes and losing?

Shelvey?! in or out?

Not for me. Not at international level. And doesn't work hard enough. A successful team can't afford passengers in defence these days. Very good passer mind.

England World Cup Progress

Sounds like he's going for a very inexperienced squad. I think he's going to pick players not scarred by previous failure.

By all accounts he is a very good pro.

maybe. i wouldn't know. still doesn't mean that another 3rd keeper option couldn't be a better fit :)

Surprised at Wilshire's exclusion, I know he is a bit fragile but he seems to have regained fitness and form for Arsenal and there is just nobody else like him who can unlock tight defences. Seems Southgate is continuing with that old England tradition of mistrusting creative midfield players.

Stanley to be fair he’s underperformed before when we took him. With less than 10 games and very few really top notch performances I don’t think he deserves to go, take Shelvey as the unpredictable game changer?

England World Cup Progress

Shelvey would be very useful with Vardy up top but I don't think we'll play that way. Loftus-Cheek more likely to make the squad.

Depressing. Ali is the only creative spark if he fires. We haven t got enough quality to get the best out of Kane. Defensively against better teams? I can't see it.
Same old for me. Thus spoke Zarathustra.

No poll ?

England World Cup Progress

we will make the last 8 nailed on.....what happens when we get there is down to good forturne and a bit of luck, which we don't seem to have much of when it gets to these stages........hopefully this will be the year it changes ;) this is probably the most open world cup theres been for ages....could be one of 5 or 6 who could win it.....and im counting us as one of those ;)

England World Cup Progress

Lets be honest, winning one game of WC knockout football would be progress, anything more "dreamland"
