Forty years ago were on the eve of the first game of Espana 82, turned out to be one hell of a tournament with England undefeated but still not winners, the Brazilians and french would excite us with there flair and panache, an the Italian's had been slow starters but went on to beat the West Germans in the final, any special memories..

Probably my favourite World Cup and the first I remember.

Keegan and Brooking coming on in the final game for the last 20 and so nearly creating a goal between them.

Maybe its the rose tinted spectacles but seemed to be better than the WC's these days

There were some great games -and can still hear Motsons commentary for some of the moments!

I was in Hawaii at the start of the tournament and it took me 2-3 days to find out the scores of our first couple of games. No results on tv, newspapers or anything.

After the disasters of 74 and 78 this was the first world cup i was engaged with aged 18. Went round a friends house from school and caught Bryan Robsons goal at the start. Was beyond ecstatic. Keegans miss in the Spain game bought it all back down to to reality.

Northern Ireland beating Spain was a superb night.
Brazil were special especially going forward,but unable to defend.
Diego Maradona,Alain Giresse,Socrates,Pat Jennings,David Narey,Karl Heinze Rummenigge,Dino Zoff.
Great tournament.

Very Decent tournament….Brazil had a great team with Zico Socrates etc etc but went out to Italy in a great game 3-2…England started brilliantly but couldn’t get the vital goal v Spain and went out ….final was tardellis moment which they love to show of a player going mental when scoring ? Schumacher should have been imprisoned never mind banned for that assault v France ?

I was in San Antonio Ibiza on a club 18-30 for our games against Spain and the Germans, just got very lively with the Germans after the game..

Rossi was a goal machine but Brazil should have beaten them as a far more entertaining side.

First World Cup Finals I was old enough to follow all the way through (I wasn't allowed to stay up to watch the late kick offs in Argentina '78). So many memories;

• Racing home from school to watch England in the WCFs for the first time and Robson scoring after 27 seconds against France - I thought this World Cup lark must be easy.
• Getting excited at a former Bee playing in the tournament (Brian Turner for New Zealand)
• The thrill of being able to watch two live matches a day on TV at a time when there would normally only be two or three live games in an entire domestic season, and watching teams and players that really were almost unknown to us - every game seemed full of mystery and potential surprise
• That sublime Brazilian team - it was the last tournament when they still really felt as exotic and exciting as the media still try to pretend they are today.
• David Narey's long range toe poke to put Scotland ahead against Brazil.....and two Scottish defenders colliding to let the USSR in for the goal that knocked them out
• Keegan's header from 4 yards out against Spain - how did he miss?
• Coverage of Brazil v USSR being interrupted with a newsflash about the end of the Falklands war
• Hungary scoring 10 against El Salvador
• Algeria beating West Germany....and the German fix with Austria to knock them out
• Cameroon going out in the group stages despite being unbeaten - and a first sight of Roger Milla, already a veteran but still 8 years from his World Cup peak
• Gerry Armstrong's winner for Norn Iron against Spain in Seville - how did they manage to hold out?
• Kuwait walking off the pitch in protest at an offside decision
• THAT game between Brazil and Italy and THAT Paulo Rossi hattrick - still probably the best WCFs match I've ever seen. The other games in that three team mini group with Argentina weren't bad either.
• Harald Schumacher's assault on Patrick Battiston, which overshadowed another thriller, 3-3 in the semi final
• The BBC theme music for their coverage of the tournament - surely the greatest World Cup intro of all time?

Algeria be played Chile the day before and they knew what was needed.
Hrubesch scored the only goal on 10 minutes.

England had great support in the Basque country from Bilbao and San Sebastian.
Those locals never forgot the British soldiers who fought against Franco during the Spanish Civil War in 1937 and treated everyone accordingly.

The Spanish police were causing all sorts of problems in Madrid though.
