Euro 2008

Euro 2008

It must be a recent rule. I remember a cup final between liverpool and everton mid 80's where to avoid being offside tony cottee (i think) actually stood in the goal, thereby technically being off the pitch. The goal was given then.

Euro 2008

Romania to win?

On that performance, I don't think so and I pray they go out early. Worse to watch than Greece 4 years ago.

Euro 2008

I never take much notice of who the commentators are when I'm watching the game, but who was that complete **** lat night on ITV for the Italy/Dutch game?

He wasn't commentating on the game too much, but never stopped pouring out inane trivia. Absolutely appalling.

Add in the adverts and a panel including Zenden (now he was interesting, wasn't he?) - ITV is sheite.

the commentators even suggested RVN should have gone over when challenged by Buffon as he would have got a penatly, two seconds later, roll the replay, ohh right, he didn't actually touch him

Euro 2008

I believe in the opinion of both the referee and linesman the Italian defender who was taken out of play by his own goalkeeper is deemed in play. Both the goalkeeper and the Dutch forward ran back onto the field, but the Italian defender who rolled about as if injured (odd that the Italians would do such a thing) suddenly recovered once the goal was awarded. He stayed off to draw the offside but this time it didn't work. It's in the rules for offside decisions.

I wonder if that was why the asst ref made that decision, or if it was just an error. I would agree with the interpretation set out here if the Italian defender had stepped off the field as the Dutch player was about to put the ball back in, but I think he went off accidentally at the original clearance, so it would be harsh to say he was seeking an advantage

That's never stopped Ruud before. He might also argue that if he had fallen without contact it was because he had to avoid the keeper (like one Gerrard got vs Sheffield at the start of 06-07), though the slow motion suggested he was leaning too far to his right befor hurdling the keeper

I think that's a bit different. To be given offside, a forward has to be interfering with play, so Cottee was just making it clear that he wasn't, whereas a defender can play forwards on even if he's lying on the floor near the touchline

Euro 2008

cant believe how Italy dominated yet were thrashed, I still believe Italy will progress and do away with the dutch in the semi finals

Euro 2008

Fantastic tournament so far. Great entertainment. :) :sorted:

But then again I have only watched one game.

Group stages are always the same. Says a lot about it that in all games on one team has scored.

Perhaps it's because the rule's only applied to attacking players i.e. "interfering with play" whereas with defenders you can still play someone offside even if you're lying broken by the corner flag. An attacker has to be interfering with play, a defender does not, although even though I'd spotted the defender off the pitch, I thought that offside still applied. Clearly, it isn't the case. Once again the offside rule plays merry havoc :D

And if RvN had gone down for that penalty shout I could see him getting nothing except waved to his feet or a yellow card. He did the right thing by playing on as there was still a clear scoring chance.

Euro 2008

none of the iron curtain brigade will get past the quarters as none of them have a decent striker

You could have said the same for greece 4 years ago but they won through been very defensive same as russia will win this euros.

This is why the the offside law is now a mess. Referee now cannot apply any common sense. That goal was offside to me, regardless of what is now written in the laws.

It seems they are now drafted purely for the benefit of referees and asistants and not for those that actually watch and play the game.

Euro 2008

Perhaps a return to "If you're standing in an offside position, you're offside" is in order.

I suppose it is designed to stop a defender, realising that he can put a striker offside, stepping over the line.

Whether this has a time limit on it or not I don't know, i.e. if there's a defender with a serious injury lying off the pitch.

:imwith:

And anyway it's easier to be offside if there's fewer players on the pitch. Probably. Hardly fair to penalise Van Nistelrooy for the fact that the Italian goalkeeper had clattered one of his own.

Euro 2008

Well if Romania play like they did the other day they will not win the tournament. I was surprised that Italy did't play better than they did. Perhaps the Netherlands will win the tournament if they play like they did last night. I see the Greeks are playing tonight against Sweden. Ought to be a good game but you never can tell...............

Euro 2008

Very enjoyable game last night.

Just as well after the mind numbing dullness of the earlier match.

Go on the Dutch

Yes, but he didn't in this case. :crazy2: :sorted:

Italy have been cheated IMHO.

Having taken and passed a referees course about 30 years ago, this was in the laws back then. It is not a new law, it is just an incident that doesn't occur that often and certainly not in this high profile tournament.

Euro 2008

OK let's try this one. An attacker is laying injured on the goal line in an off-side postion. Another attacker shoots and hits the prone team mate but the ball goes in. The ref awards a goal as the injured player was not seeking to gain an advantage. However if the injured player was laying in an offside postion just wide of the goal post and the shot is clearly going wide but hits the injured player and goes in, is he regarded as now seeking to gain an advantage which happens to just be a consequence of this event and the goal disallowed, or is deemed to be part of the field of play an the goal allowed.

Euro 2008

Maybe I won't.

:sneakoff:

Spain look quality going forward with Torres & Villa ripping the Russians apart in the first half. Russia look distinctly average which makes it painful watching after us not being able to finish above them in qualifying. :(

Euro 2008

The longer this tournament goes on, the more convinced I become that England would have been completely humiliated in it.

We'd have been fine but embarrassed ourselves when we ran into a decent team and with Italy and France's results so far we wouldn't have stood out as particularly underperforming

Shhhh apparently you're not allowed to say that ;)
Got William Hill's free £25 on Sweden later at 6/4, so will wave goodbye to that imaginary money later.

Good luck with that bet. I imagine all the bookies are giving away free money to bet with at the moment, probably on the condition of putting lots of money into the account in the first place however!

As for not being allowed to say whatever, it is only my (very humble) opinion, which will never be proven either way. I think Simon C has it right when he says England would be okay until meeting a half decent outfit. Of course that would have been today - against Spain!

Euro 2008

Lost count of the number of times the Spanish have walked the ball through a static Russian defence and failed to finish. A lot of standing about and not much movement from both teams in that sort of situation.
Good 3rd goal just as I type this :D
Spain to me still do seem very slow on the ball and running off it.

That's exactly my thoughts, we would have struggled against anyone decent and possibly fared even worse against Holland than Italy did, especially as the weather's been a bit warm. We also have a very bad habit of coming down to poor teams' levels and don't seem to be able to finish them off properly in recent times. Maybe it's that good old English arrogance that makes the team think they don't have to try as hard.

I got the £25 from WH after putting £30 e/w on Brentford, so it's free money to me as I was going to put a few small bets on E2008 anyway. I'm not silly enough to put loads of money into my account though, I'm not really a betting man except on the odd occasion ;)

Good finish by the Russian there but the Spanish have had their foot off the pedal for about 10 minutes.

*is £12.50 up* \o/ :D
Or technically £37.50 up as they gave me the £25 free.

Euro 2008

England would have fared fine in this tournament, we would have gotten to atleast the quarter finals as I have not seen any team that I believe would take us to the cleaners, Italy had very old slow defenders thats why they got done on the break so Holland would not have thrashed us, Russia and all of the soviet bloc teams are nothing special when it comes to playing away from home

Euro 2008

England did not fare fine in this tournament. They did qualiify for the final competition. They get eliminated in the qualifiers. Get over it

p.s. I am sure that of the major European footballing nations (yes that does not include Wales), that England have by far the worst record when it comes to qualifying for the World Cup and the Euro Championships. This is nothing new. England were in this competition but were simply not good enough!

Euro 2008

Assuming we would have qualified instead of Russia - we would be in their group. We never beat Sweden (1958 last time?), on yesterdays performance Spain would have beaten us comfortably so it is unlikely we would get out the group.

Watch England play - then watch Germany or Spain Or Holland or even Portugal play we are light years behind how their teams use the ball, control it and create chances.
And don't forget - France beat us 1-0 recently - a French team that could not beat Romania...

An interesting question to ask is how many of Englands payers would the other top nations actually want to have in their teams?

e.g. would Spain want Rooney over Torres or Villa. Would the Dutch want Gerrard over Sneijder and so on ... ?

Euro 2008

Surely you would be £37.50 up even if you paid £25 @ 6/4?
That's what I thought. The only thing I can think of is that the initial £25 was a free bet they gave me for signing up and putting money on our lot next season, so I don't get that bit back.
Either that or something's amiss.
Their help isn't much use with regard to the free bet stuff.
Anyway, I've got a tenner each on a Czech draw and a Turkey win today so I'll probably be down by 930 ;)

Re the tournament: Qualifying would not have got us anywhere. Not qualifying is surely a pointer now to the FA and all involved that something needs to change. It won't, of course, as money rates higher than prestige on their agenda.

Euro 2008

If we had of qualified The Wally with the brolly would still be England manager.

or is it the other way around - if it doesn't carry on then the game is cancelled
