Fantastic summer, great time for music, great Euro tournament, very successful week at Royal Ascot.

Euro '96

Probably the last time I was really caught up in the euphoria. So many great moments.
Seamans save, Gazzas goal and dentist chair, the demolition of Holland, Sukers chip, Poborskys lob. I could go on and on

20 years ago........ unbelievable......what a summer that was!!!!!!

....................................what short memories some people have!!! - now 50 years ago, THAT was some summer (especially when you're a testosterone-laden 17 year old lad);)................................:hohumsmilie:

(wasn't too much of "Seamans save" then!)

I remember I was at the departure gate at LHR waiting to board an aircraft whilst the penalty shoot out against (Spain?) was going on. They were announcing last call to board and my Mrs at the time was going mad at me for not getting on the plane. Luckily Seaman saved the last pen just in the nick of time and me and another chap who was doing the same, both shouted out YES!!! at the same time and we both had to leg it down the airbridge just before they shut the cabin door! :D

Worked in an office overlooking Leicester Square. It was a sea of orange the afternoon of the big game and we had a Dutch lad working with us who kept playing the team song over and over. It went something like 'gedeng gedeng woo woo' ... Watched the game with him later in one of the Covent Garden pubs. Boy was that a sweet moment.

England Scotland in a pub in Guildford while on a stag do. That's the last time I can remember the result of an international really mattering.

Should have won the tournament. Grrrrr

This song got worn out on my cassette walkman lol

I was just a 10 year old at Euro '96. It was my first England tournemant & fortunately I remember it so clearly. Can't believe it's 20 years ago 'though.

It's about time we had another major international competition held over here :banghead:

Euro '96

went to every england game.......great tournament and we should have won it, if only gazza was 3 inches taller in that semi lol
proper scenes inside and outside wembley for the scotland game.....................and in ealing before and after ;) mass disorder up in london all day and night with england and scottish mobs all over the place,
the dutch being destroyed on the pitch........england actually winning a penalty shoot out v spain.........the atmosphere at the germany game, probably one of the best of all time........the trafalger square riot after, baddiel and skinner singing in the stands.....britpop at its finest.......it was a proper year ;)

Remember vividly BBC played "Walkaway" by Cast to close the coverage of the semi final, great track and still brings back mixed feelings every time I hear. Very enjoyable times apart from the result and my mood immediately afterwards as had gotten used to doing congas down Egham Street wrapped head to toe in toilet paper after games since Scotland win and as superstitious didn't want to jinx the next game.
1996 was a great summer but it could so nearly have been the greatest.

England Scotland game. We were driving to the west country going on holiday. I couldn't bear to listen to the radio commentary. Then my dear now long dead dad called me on my mobile, which he never did, full of excitement trying to share with me Gazza's wonder goal. Special moment in my heart.

Yep , the man united coach got off lightly in comparison

agree with all that , i turned up at midnight at my firms summer do tearstained and mumbling incoherently about why didnt gazza slide with his left foot. Brilliant from the time we all filled in our ticket forms in stripes right up until the fecking german game

It is to my eternal regret I got two tickets to the England group stage before knowing the teams and we went for the first and third games

First cos it would be good to see the opening events of the tournament and all the razzamatazz and third cos it could be decisive

We turned up at 2.58 so missed all the "razamatazz" and watched a dull England v Switzerland and therefore missed the legendary and iconic England v Scotland game

Dutch game was awesome, and remember the whole stadium singing Coming home and Vindaloo, and it was especially good knowing my dutch girlfriend at the time was on the opposite side of the stadium in orange, and also knowing what the sidebet was we had (that was a happy week in the bedroom for me!)

Euro '96

Happy memories.
New born son, great music, 8 weeks off work, tickets for the first 3 games thanks to Voice and BKK.
Being best man at 'Ayes Bee's wedding for the quarter finals, god knows how we survived the stag do in Brighton:)
rave on:)

Just googled it, you're right!! Maybe we sang 3 lions twice! I do remember thinking it must be amazing for Skinner and Baddiel to be in the stadium and hear everyone singing it.

Euro '96

I blame it all on that horrible grey England shirt. :yuck: :banghead:

The Scotland game just below them at Wembley will live long in the memory. No prawn sandwich brigade that day. So so different to the Swiss crowd.

I remember the support in Wembley for the dutch - good effort.

I went to all England matches except the semi-final, and nearly all the people around where we were sat (just to the left of the tunnel as you look at the pitch*) were 'proper' supporters from all corners of the country.

*Was right at the back, next to the Spanish fans, for the quarter final. They had a drum, but didn't make much noise.

So may pivotal moments for England in 96. Remember the press clamouring for Shearer to be dropped in favour of Andy Cole (yes really) before he lashed in the goal in the first match against the Swiss. The Scotland penalty miss when we were on the ropes ... only for Gazza to put the match to bed within seconds. Spain had one (if not two) perfectly good goals ruled out for offside before we won the shootout. Then that semi final - at a time when it felt like we would never beat the Germans - we so nearly did. Great tournament. It goes to show how knife edge these things are. We were within a whisker of the final but actually only won two of our five games outright.

Euro '96

Just watched it with B2B Jnr (scorer of 42 in 5 games so far this season here) and lost for words explaining how easy Gazza made it seem - he doesn't quite get it yet...one day he might understand hopefully... Just watching it again is heartbreaking - el tel saying it's the fathers who might still understand was so on the money...

I still think 1990 was better, both great times but 90 was special IMO, I did tell my lad to watch it last night, I explained to him that 90 changed football and how fans behaved and 96 just brought families back into grounds, they sort of said this too last night, younger folk won't realise how taboo football had become and how much it was frowned upon, these two tournaments changed it all for the better.

Yes me too, especially as my youngest daughter was born that year on June 15, bang in the middle of the tournament. Every time I hear Nessun Dorma the memories flood back...great days...

1990 was great as well but I reckon 96 has the music, it was here and the whole country came to a standstill.

Just watched the Alan Shearer programme on euro 96.

Great viewing and really took me back to that summer.

Watching that Southgate pen was like watching it at the time, waiting for the run up hoping he's going to bury it and gutting after it.

That's the last time we played well in a tournament.

Remember feeling really really low after that penalty miss, felt gutted for about a week. I think it felt worse than Italia 90 because I was convinced we would win the final in 96 if we got there.

Euro '96

The 4-1 vs The Netherlands is still the best performance from England I've seen

Euro '96

86, 90 and 96 were all great tournaments. None since have even come anywhere close.

Just watch the Shearer programme on iPlayer. Christ what a great summer that was....

I don't remember Wales being involved?

Doesn't matter. It was a brilliant summer.

Somewhere I have a picture of the Dentist's Chair in that bar.....I've found other pictures of that bar, but not that one. Give me a few mins :)

Agreed mate. Luckily got tickets for the Scotland game. Great atmosphere and very lively meet at the globe and the incident with the sweaty coach!!
