Extending Contracts

AS has said he does not want or expect such a large turnover of players in subsequent close seasons.

With this in mind, maybe it is time to tie one or two of our key players down with longer, and better paid, contracts now we are back in the First Division.

Charlie comes to mind with a year left on his current contract. Also Sam Wood, Ryan Dickson and Marcus Bean. Sometimes the very best signings can be your current players.

Extending Contracts

I think maybe Scott is more concerned about getting the players that are out of contract signed up first

Extending Contracts

Sam Wood was offered a new improved contract when AS released nine, who will be one of our key players next season

She put her reason straight after you cut it out of the quote :sorted:
But we are in the Second Division, if you are to use that term, blunstone :thetruth:

Personally, I wonder if players like MacDonald, Wood, Dickson and Bean will be extra motivated if they have just one year left - in order for them to prove themselves either to Brentford or to any other clubs for the transfer window come January. But it is a risk, as they can always walk free at the end of the season if they pen down nothing.....

Extending Contracts

I think it is up to players like Charlie, Marcus and Nathan to show they deserve contract extensions by their peformances in the first few months of the season.

It is crucial though that someone like Wood who came in probably on a low paying contract signs a new more lucrative and longer term contract now that he has shown that he is a potential star.

The Bees have probably the best left sided partnership in the bottom 2 divisions and hopefully Wood and also Dickson sign longer term deals as they are both accumulating assets who could eventually make us a lot of money, unless, of course, they can fulfill their ambitions at Brentford !

because they will be out of contract in a year and will walk away for nothing.

zilcho. nout. freebies.

just like others have before (Hunt, Sodje and Tabb to name but three now with Reading and Strevens & Saunders are walking away on frees from their club) when a fee could / should have been achieved.

we got £100k plus for Tabby.

Will you 'guarantee' the contracts then? just in case the players don't perform in their first year of a 2/3/4 year contract?

Hunt was released - we chose to let him go.

It's not as easy as that I am afraid. Good players have all the leverage now. I bet Dagenham went down on bended knee to try and get Saunders to resign throughout last season and he could afford to wait things out and see if they were going to get promoted and how much they could afford to offer him.

At the same time I would expect he would know that he would receive higher offers from better placed clubs. Given all that why should he sign a new contract - you can't make him, he is ambitious to play at a higher level and also maximise his earning potential too.

Sodje knew he could do better and earn more elsewhere and he has been fully vindicated. Managers also have their own opinions on players and it would appear that Hunt was determined to leave given his situation with the club and maybe not enough effort was made to resign Tabb at a time when just maybe he might have resigned with the club.

I hope that we make efforts to resign players such as Bean Macdonald and Elder who have 1 more year on their contract but only if they continue to perform well.

i forgot to add we got money for sodje too. £350k (??) IIRC.

SO out of those 3, 2 we recieved money for and 1 WE let go, next...................

Maybe Bluntstone meant Sonko, or maybe not, who knows. ;)

i'm not blaming anyone --- far from it. and certainly not swearing or getting heated !!!

i'm just suggesting that signing our own proven players on longer deals, in whom we all have faith, and who fit into the brentford ethos under Greg and Andy, could be a most important step at this time.

the if they get sold on we (bfc) get a few thousand pounds!!!

i was asked why so explained and gave three examples of players who left on frees when they had some value had they been under longer contracts.

much like wenger getting cesc fabregas or before him thierry henry, to sign longer term deals.

as michael winner would say, calm down dear!!!

However past errors have given longer contracts to proven players that have proven one thing and that is that they were crap.
Its a juggling act in reality and some you will get wrong others right. Every team will see good players leave for nowt and other will see bad players on long contracts costing clubs huge sums. Nothing will ever be perfect.

You have a valid point about players walking away for free just like at the end of the Coppel era and if the clubs finances were healthier we probably would take a bit more of a risk by offering longer contracts. Trouble is you can end up with players like brooker or skulasson or even owusu (second spell) who contribute nothing when suffering long injuries or in Brooker's case are just crap which ties up money that could have been better used.

come back down to earth, Noades paid those players to much money in the 1st place. The club was healthy till he got involved, taking a risk by offering longer contracts would have ruined Brentford even more than the crap we are in at present:nono:
