Fairly straightforward. Which was your favourite? For me 1982. 1990 and 1998 had their moments.

2006.......i was at england paraguay game in frankfurt....one of my group was interviewed pre match by sky sports with me in the background with brentford st georges cross flag on full show.......40 deg in the stadium with stewards spraying cold water on us the whole game.......fantastic experience with lots of fun in the world cup park later that evening down by the river(and in the river)......never to be forgotton.......by this boy from glasgow,now london

1970 Brazil with Pele, the best footballing side in the best tournament with the best England team I can remember. (too young to watch 66)

1982 they were the best side to not win a World cup and shame a clinical Italian side beat them in one of the best games I've watched.

86 first I remember (I was 6 and same year started supporting the Bees) and I had the video of the tournament "hero" which I watched over and over. It featured the "dirty Uruguayans" the French losing on pens , the hand of God, the Amateur Canadians and much more. 90 still the fave tho.

Italia '90 for me......was at the height of my really taking football seriously....can remember where i was for every game...from works bar v Ireland to cricket tour against egypt.....at in-laws for cameroon quarter final and finally at home with a bloke from work who didn't really understand the importance of it for the semi final.....my missus had to tell him to go home at the end when i was in floods of tears.......

For those who haven't seen it "One Night In Turin" sums it up perfectly

1978 was fixed but it was great seeing Ally McLeod being booed by his own supporters after abysmal performances against Peru and Iran!

1990. What a few weeks that was.

I was "between jobs" around then, so deliberately didn't pursue any employment opportunities during June / July.

I think Platts goal against Belgium was the highlight - I remember running down the Uxbridge road, going berserk after that one.

Sat with a mate in my car outside Manchester's Apollo theatre listening to the last few minutes of extra time on the radio, having exited the Ry Cooder gig that had ended a couple of moments earlier. A crowd of what seemed like a hundred others surrounded the silver Ford Fiesta. I swear they lifted it from the ground in celebration when that ball went in.

Italia 90 for me. Paul Gascoigne at his absolute finest. It's the only time I have ever seen other teams genuinely scared of the skill and technique of an England player (rather than the normal pace and power). Easy to forget how good he was before his injury in 1991.

The fact I was born in 1967, the year after England's finest hour sort of sums up my football supporting career! Thank God for the Bees this season.

That Platt goal is the only non-Brentford one I think I have ever celebrated like Brentford have scored.

And, er, which pub? Although said knockers may now be rather droopy.

3. 1970 - First one I truly remember, my Uncle got the biggest Colour TV I've ever seen (casing, not screen) especially for it, and I can remember names, games, scores etc better than matches I saw last month. Everyone was Brazilian that Summer.

1998 was "my" WC, watched virtually every game and was just absorbed by it. It was back in my teeny single-buying days as well and I loved the Carnival De Paris theme.

Went to Pontinential in Spain in 1982, same time as WC was on. The 3 of us were checking in and there were match tickets and coach transfer available from the reception desk!! Got tickets for Scotland v NZ, Russia v NZ and Scotland v Russia, scene of the brilliant collision between Hansen and Miller whch led to Russia scoring and eliminating the Jocks. So that was a great memory as was '66. Most since 1990 have been pretty ordinary with SA being a total washout.

1990 - the only one in my living memory that we've given a decent account of ourselves.

It's all been high expectation and huge disappointment since. At least the media seems to have finally dropped the whole "we're going to win it" every international tournament.

1998 was the first world cup that i was old enough to enjoy (that we were in).

i remember really believing we could win right up to the point where it all went wrong for us...

that was also the last time i believed we were really in with a chance...

1966 for its outcome, but I was perhaps too young (10) to fully appreciate it at the time. But on all other counts, I think it would be 1970: good football and intensive TV coverage that was then a novelty - I don't think there had been panels of pundits before (there hadn't been enough live games for them to be pundits on). Also, it was OK as a 14 year-old to be obsessed with it for those 3 or 4 weeks whereas for future tournaments other things (A levels, Uni finals, work) have meant a bit more balance has been needed

1970. No team could match Brazil although I still think we had our best ever team there and but for a tactical change when 2 up against W Germany we would have taken them to the wire.

From a purely footballing point of view it has to be 1970 in Mexico. Brazil were probably the best team ever on the planet closely followed by a superb Italy and (the then) West Germany, England were even half decent then.

Yes. Cubillas free kick for Peru. Then that Archie Gemmill goal against Holland put them 3-1 up and for a few hopeful minutes the Scots, having been rank in the first two games, looked like getting the three goal win needed to qualify. Then the Dutch scored with a rocket and it was all done.

1966 I barely remember although I do remember the Saturday evening paper and the headlines.
1974 I remember for Holland (who should have won it) and the East v West Germany match.
1978 (without England) was brilliant. So many memories for me. The tickertape receptions were copied on opening day 1978/79 at Blackpool by 500 travelling Bees.
1982 was confusing re qualifying for the 2nd round but that final was good.
1986 (hand of god) was OK.
1990 was brilliant. I nearly went. I had £200 and was going to do a treble of the late Sir Henry Cecil's horses. I bottled it; they all won, and I missed out on £1,300 quid, and the trip.
1994 was CRAP!
1998 was pretty good in France unless you were in Marseille!
2002 has so many memories. Those who know me will know why. Up early for every game in the holiday camp!!!
2006, I backed Italy so good stuff there.
2010 was CRAP.
So, for me, 1978 and 2002 were the best.

86 was the first I remember watching and remember Beardsley and Linekar playing really well. 90 was the best world cup, I remember the group games being really boring but the rest of the games being really dramatic.
