Final Day Permutations

I guess it’s good to have a place to specifically discuss the permutations of the final day.

To finish 2nd: we need to better West Brom’s result against QPR. (Unless Brentford Draw and Fulham Win)

To finish at least 3rd: we need to match or better Fulham’s result against Wigan.

And that’s it.

Causes for optimism: Fulham have Harrison Reed suspended, and QPR are off the back of a morale boosting win vs Millwall in which they scored 4 goals.

Also want to mention that if things go unexpectedly well it could be the last competitive match played at GP, so I hope the players are aware of the magnitude of that and put in maximum effort. No doubt they will.

Is that right? Say WBA lose and Bees draw. We overtake WBA but if Fulham win ..

Final Day Permutations

Right, that's all the permutations done for 2nd place then. What next?

Final Day Permutations

.....i'm in the NLB camp on this one.....no more permutations.......we simply focus on beating Barnsley.....nothing else matters because we have no control over it.

Final Day Permutations

We need to equal or better Fulham's result to ensure 3rd place. I don't fancy Notts Florist in the PO's over 2 legs (assuming NF beat Barnsley tomorrow, of course).

If by doing the above we happen to find ourselves waving at WBA as we go past them, even better :bound:

If we win 2-0 WB win 1-0 we would have a better result but not be second

So we have to have a better outcome thus scoring more points.

Just imagine if this is how it had played out on May 2nd.

Packed house, last league game at Griffin Park everything on the line.

The only thing that would better that atmosphere would be all the above under the lights.

Final Day Permutations

I can see Wigan beating Fulham. They need a win. I want Forest to win tomorrow to relegate Barnsley.

I am confident we will beat Barnsley but less confident QPR with their defence can hold onto anything against WBA.

It is the play-offs for us sadly. But I can see us winning the play-offs.

Final Day Permutations

We just need to turn up on Wednesday and win. Simple as. Not worth worrying about anything else

Final Day Permutations

To be honest after sitting back and thinking even if we had won today the pressure on us Wednesday could of been even worse than today even with the cushion of two points. Especially if we have a Barnsley side who could still survive.

So for me it’s the same equal pressure for us and WBA next week.

The optimist in me believes it was good to get
the hiccup out the way today...

Let’s hope WBA keep wobbling..

This is exactly what I have been telling myself since the final whistle earlier today. Just concentrate on the next game and nothing else.

COYBEES!

I wouldn't even watch the playoffs. Even if I wanted to, I wouldn't be granted a licence by the b***ock Boxing Board of Control. Eight excruciating knock out bouts have left their toll and one more blow to the area could be fateful. Not to mention heavy blows V Doncaster, Bristol City in 93, Freight Rovers at Wembley and Cardiff etc. I promised never to take football so seriously and to not put myself through it again about four playoffs ago. Each time since I have dropped my guard and I fell for it again today, which felt very much felt like an unscheduled, unlicensed fight. I can handle Wednesday because I'm not expecting anything but if I don't get anything, wake me up when it's all over. Who knows, my absence and kindness to my own ticker might just shoot me in the foot and provide a bit of ironic luck. I'd take that for the team. ;)

Final Day Permutations

Win and hope! But yes permutations are worth looking at. Don't draw with WBA losing! Imagine if Fulham went up, would be the least deserved automatic promotion in history.

Final Day Permutations

Keep the faith, there is a lot to play for and we still have a chance.
Some on here will be nerves wrecks when we reach and play in the promised land.

Well said, Bookham Bee. From another "Bookham Bee" - I grew up there.

I've been thinking along these lines as well. I really thought we would exorcise the ghost of non-achievement in games that matter today but I was wrong. I don't think I can go through it again. It would be different if we were able to attend as you have to support your club but not sure I can sit through the play off games now.

Trouble is, no matter how much we tell ourselves we won't put ourselves through it, we know deep down that when the time comes, we will really. What else are we going to be able to concentrate on while the mayhem is taking place?

Final Day Permutations

If we win and WBA don’t- 2nd place, Fulham result irrelevant
If we draw- we finish out of top 2 unless WBA lose and Fulham fail to win
If we lose we finish 3rd unless Fulham win in which case we’re 4th

The other permutations are uninteresting. We need to go for a win. It might not be enough. A draw might be enough or send us down to 4th. So just win it and have the best of the permutations.

World of difference between watching live, where you have no choice, and watching remotely. I ignored the second half of Hudds/WBA by going out with the dog. I will watch the Barnsley game but not the POs. Should we get to Wembley I will sit at the top of Horsenden Hill looking at the Wembley Arch. If we fail this time it will be worse than any of our, many, previous failures by a long way and I can't face watching it happen. Rank cowardice I know but I found today really hard to take.

Oh I hear you. OK if I come and sit 2 metres away from you on Horsenden Hill?:D

Final Day Permutations

This is like a depressing and boringly obvious loyal post. Don’t think I can take much more of this stuff. Yes. It’s all worse than today’s result.

Final Day Permutations

I'm not sure I buy the always choke on big occasions

If we did how on earth did we get promoted in 1992,1999,2009,2014?

How did we beat Orient in that famous game at Brisbane Road

How did we beat Sunderland in the FA Cup?

How did we hold the Champions of Europe to a two all draw in the FA Cup!

How did we beat Everton in the League Cup?

Yes I know there have games where we have simply failed to turn up but in my opinion to say we fail to turn up in the big games simply isn't true.

Two of those promotions were from the bottom division which we should never have been in. 1992 and 2014 were the brilliant exceptions - two occasions. Sunderland were one of the worst Premiership sides ever that season our only FA cup performances of note have been in 89 and the 2-2 with Chelsea. You cannot be blind to the fact that every time we are in a relegation fight - we are relegated, apart from MA's great escape. Much as I love Brentford the times we choke massively outweigh the successes.

On balance you are right but there are people on here who think big game = failure without exception.

I don't agree with them

I tend to think in terms of great experiences rather than great achievements. Certain games, often meaningless in terms of importance, hold great significance. Anyone who saw Alex Dawson's goal, highlighted in another thread, or Andy Woon's hat trick, there are many of these to choose from, will know what I mean. I just have always had the feeling that there is a fundamental weakness at the club which manifests itself on big occasions. I think this is changing under MB and his team and may well be ended this season but yesterday's game brings it all back.

Ironically if we didn't have the lockdown I doubt we'd be in this position. With Pontus' ongoing injury problems back then and the fact we've performed about as well as we possibly can this last month, chances are we'd be sat in 4th or 5th spot with nothing to play apart from a bit of pre play-offs form.

I get your point though...if only we could be allowed in for this one! Sod the virus, we need this!!!

Final Day Permutations

From what ive seen of Bilic and co. recently Qpr can get a result on Weds.

Definitely changing. We have just won on 7 big occasions. Possibly another 1 or maybe another 2/3. :sorted:

Final Day Permutations

To me it’s quite simple, win against Barnsley and at the same time hope QPR get at least a draw

Final Day Permutations

Barnsley have just won v Forest.
That means they still have a chance of survival, particularly with Wigan and Sheff.Wed. still facing points deductions.

So rather than facing a relegated side with nothing to play for, we are facing a team fighting for a win to survive!!!

All that changed in the last few minutes of injury time in their game!

Final Day Permutations

Wow, Barnsley 1 Forest 0
Their relegation fight is on
Wednesday will be no pushover

I think the fact that Barnsley need to come at us will help. We're better against attacking teams.

...Barnsley don't really need to come at us....they might defend deep 1st half....see how things are at hawthorns ht....then go for it 2nd half....if WBA are winning by 2 or more ht....our game may have completely different complexion 2nd half....we'll see.

If they don't score they are screwed. What happens at West Brom will have no impact on them and who says the Ra Ra s won't score?

As someone once said it's a funny old game

Final Day Permutations

Two best permutations:
1) Luton and Charlton Win. Brum lose - Brum get relegated!
2) Luton, Charlton and Brum Win. Boro lose - Colin gets relegated!

You haven't factored in points deductions

Final Day Permutations

More worried now that Forest finish 6th...

I’m looking forward to them finishing 7th. It wouldn’t even take outlandish results. Cardiff to win 2-0 v Hull at home, Swansea to beat Reading 3-0 away, Forest to lose 2-0 at Stoke and miss out on the basis of goals scored as the three of them tie on points and GD.

Final Day Permutations

Qpr due 150k if wba and furlong go up. They cant be that hard up surely to go into a match half arsed for 150k. Then again even if this was an f.a cup final for them i still think they would lose! Need wba to have a serious off day, lose their heads and get an early red card maybe.

QPR players will almost certainly have win, clean sheet + goal bonuses in their contracts. I doubt they’ll go into the game ‘half arsed’.

They've gone into games half-arsed for absolutely nothing for a lot of the season..

There is a bizarre possibility that some Brentford fans with sky sports will inadvertently miss the last moments at Griffin Park. Unlikely but possible.

If we're cruising by 3 or 4 in our game, and the West Brom game is a draw with 5 minutes to go, some may choose to switch to watch the game at the hawthorns rather than Grffin Park's last moments.

Weird.

Funnily enough that thought occurred to me last night. What do we do in that scenario? Miss the last few minutes of football played at Griffin Park or ignore the match which is deciding our fate?

Ignore the other game! If WBA were level with 5 to go, I really don't think I could stomach watching it and if QPR let one in in the last minute, I think that would do me in!

As soon as WBA whistle is blown
Sky will ignore who has gone up as runners up
This is far more important to Sky Sports Leeds

Watch Leeds United lift the Championship trophy live on Sky Sports Football from 9.30pm,
