Former Managers

Who was the last Brentford manager who left voluntarily and went on to “better things” long-term?

I can’t think of anyone.

What’s your time horizon for long term??

Malcolm Macdonald, Jimmy Sirrel, John Docherty, Micky Adams, Steve Coppell

So excluding Coppell, who it could be argued had been ‘successful’ before he came to Brentford, the last one was almost 60 years ago! ?

Dean Smith. 3 years at Villa and got them promoted to the PL. Boyhood dream fulfilled.
Perhaps. Arguable. His cv will show a promotion, followed by 18 months struggling near the foot of the table, then a relegation with Norwich and another relegation with Leicester. Okay, so he was only there a couple of months, but the history books will show he took them down.

Surely Adams and Docherty were sacked - they didn’t leave through choice?
In the 80s John Doc went to Millwall after George Graham left for Arsenal and took them into the old first division. After Frank McLintock left the Bees they reunited at the Den with Doc as number one and Frank as assistant. Bugger of a journey from Southgate to Millwall though?

Thomas has gone on record to say that a move may not be better or make him happier - but their ceiling is currently higher and his stock is very high, it makes sense as hard as it is

He got a team promoted which is something 90 per cent of managers don’t have on their CV.

It took 10 solid years before he first got the sack, which after 400 games is pretty impressive in itself.

Rosler to Wigan

Edit - seeing the comments below about better things, please forget this post.

John Doc remembered more as a player for us, and as manager for Millwall. Anyway he’s in the Hall of Fame at both clubs, which is pretty cool.

He did pretty well at Cambridge, taking them into the then Second Division (Championship). Should be in their HofF as well.

Lee Carsley. Sort of, if you include interim managers.
