Formula 1 2014

Getting in the mood for the new season now.

Driver Changes

Rookies

Daniil Kyvat (Toro Rosso)
Kevin Magnussen (McLaren)

Driver Moves

Felipe Massa (Ferrari to Williams)
Pastor Maldonado (Williams to Lotus)
Kimi Raikkonen (Lotus to Ferrari)
Daniel Ricciardo (Toro Rosso to Red Bull)
Adrian Sutil (Force India to Sauber)
Sergio Perez (McLaren to Force India) Made the scapegoat for such a poor season.
Nico Hulkenberg (Sauber to Force India)

Left F1

Mark Webber (retired)
Paul Di Resta (dropped)

Big news is Bernie Ecclestone has stepped down from the board of CVC (who run F1) but will look after day to day running while the court case is ongoing. Ron Dennis has replaced Martin Whitmarsh as McLaren CEO. Ross Brawn rumoured to come in as team principal from next year after being replaced at Mercedes by Toto Wolff and Paddy Lowe.

Calendar

IN: Austria (returning), Russia (new)
OUT: Korea (a shame as I enjoyed it out there), India

Technical changes

It's a whole new era of F1. V8s are gone and replaced by V6 turbos. More detail here

Grid penalties can carry over (e.g. If you qualify last, the penalty carries over to the next race and only the next race)
Double points will be used in the last race (I hope this is scrapped)
Drivers now have numbers so Lewis Hamilton is now 44. Helps on the marketing I assume and gives the drivers a bit more of an identity.

Formula 1 2014

Ron taking back control at McLaren.

Ross Braun probably getting itchy feet.

I think Kevin Magnussen could be entertaining.

Formula 1 2014

Just under two weeks until lights out in Australia.

Mercedes look in the best shape after 12 days of testing, followed by Williams and the other cars powered by the German company.
Ferrari are yet to really show their hand.
Red Bull have had a series of struggles, but if they get the reliability they will be up there.
Lotus have had a nightmare. It will be interesting to see if their notably weaker driver line-up can mount a challenge.

Would love to see Hamilton win the title but it's going to be an interesting battle.

Formula 1 2014

Reckon Ferrari are just taking it easy staying out of the limelight for Alonso to lodge an assault on the title..

Formula 1 2014

Caterham look awful. No time set in both practice sessions. DNQ could be on the cards.

Where does Fernandes get the money? I am guessing he is just pissing away the Mittals money at QPR, but what about Caterham? The guy is only worth $200 million, surely the deficit Caterham F1 operates on would take a huge chunk out of that? I hope the Caterham team and the car manufacturer are not under the same umbrella, would be a shame to see a great British car company go under because of one mans ego trip.

Formula 1 2014

They managed yo qualify in a wet session. Lotus surprisingly even more rubbish than expected.

Lewis opens up with pole. Now to turn it into victory tomorrow hopefully.

Formula 1 2014

Some of those cars are beyond pig ugly. Caterham and Force India being the worst. Torro Rosso looks like it has a sex aid stuck on its front.

Formula 1 2014

Interesting GP. Hamilton and Vettel fail to do 5 laps. Rosberg looked streets ahead of everyone and now Riccardo has been disqualified after finishing 2nd. Good day for McLaren who have both drivers on the podium

Formula 1 2014

A shame for Lewis but these things happen. Impressed with young Magnussen.

Formula 1 2014

Button up to 3rd after some fuel shenanigans

Formula 1 2014

They were warned during the race about it but didn't do anything about it. Silly Red Bull

Formula 1 2014

Mclaren could be dark horses for the constructors championship at least, nobody has really tipped them so far but they have the seemingly best engine and have been there or thereabouts during test sessions. They also have a pretty good workable driver combination.

Formula 1 2014

Still think it's Mercedes to lose but yes looked very impressive

Formula 1 2014

We've only had one race!

It's hard to know what to think of Caterham. One the one hand I view them as the QPR of F1 so would be rather pleased for them to not net a single point this season. On the other, Fernandes has talked of pulling out of F1 if Caterham don't improve, which might give QPR another couple of years of breathing room before he & the hooped scum go bust.

Formula 1 2014

Caterham are doing their best to cost Fernandez cash. Looks like another one will be heading the arches for some new bodywork and quick respray!

Formula 1 2014

Hamilton on pole. Hopefully the engine won't give out on him this time.

Formula 1 2014

That's the way to start the day. Lewis had it in control from lap one. Good to see Rosberg make it a one-two as well. Well done to the mighty Silver Arrows.

Formula 1 2014

Strange watching it without the noise

Formula 1 2014

Not going to comment on the noise until I've heard it when live at the track, not on the telly.

Formula 1 2014

Kinda prefer the noise they make now. Pretty easy for Mercedes today. Weren't even running at full engine power at the end

Formula 1 2014

The downshifts sound really futuristic :owusu:

Formula 1 2014

An enjoyable race yesterday.

Formula 1 2014

A fantastic race yesterday, Hamilton and Rosberg looked like they were at some indoor cart track. Brilliant stuff.

Formula 1 2014

Did enjoy Vettel being told to let Ricciardo through!

Formula 1 2014

.............Lewis on pole for tomorrow............

Formula 1 2014

Another masterful drive from Hamilton, although another lap and two and it may have been a different result.

Good drive from Vettel from along way back to finish 4th.

Gutted for McLaren, would like to see them back up there.

As for ferrari, that is a pig ugly car with a nose like an east end boxer.

Formula 1 2014

Best race of the season currently in progress - another strop from young Lewis due shortly if Rosberg claims a podium ?

Formula 1 2014

Just seen Salford Bee singing "Ricardo"......bloody turncoat closet convict lover!! : mad2:

Well he'd stopped Rosberg taking a bigger lead in the title race and beat his team-mate again. A great race. One of the best I've been to. Yet to see the Massa-Perez crash again - saw the crash from my stand (outside of the hairpin) and the destroyed Force India (close up). Know Perez has been punished for it.

Great few days away.

Formula 1 2014

Montreal

Accessibility: Fantastic. A five minute Metro ride from my hotel then a 40 minute walk (naturally my stand was pretty much the furthest away from the station)
Stands: Decent. Had a fantastic view of the Massa-Perez shunt. Metal seats (bubblewrap was used).
Facilities: Available food was good. Toilets were portaloos. Couldn't hear the commentators from the stand. No beer available (just Bud Light) - a BYOB circuit.
Race: Fantastic to watch. Great race. Could follow it from the stands. Noise is a disappointment though. I like my ears to ring which they did with the V8s. Car numbers need to be more visible for the supporters at the track.
Overall: I was very impressed. Delighted that it has got a long-term deal. Montreal has a massive party to celebrate having the race. I'm more convinced than ever that London needs a GP. While Silverstone is a great track, it's out of the way.

This is my personal ranking of GPs I've been to taking everything into account.

Canada (Montreal)
Italy (Monza)
Japan (Suzuka)
Britain (Silverstone)
Germany (Nurburgring)
Korea (Yeongam)
Hungary (Hungaroring)

Formula 1 2014

Just read they want a standing start for the restart. I don't think it is necessary.
If you're going to do that, scrap the safety car and red flag the race instead.
Prefer seeing them racing than behind the safety car, especially when they keep it out more than what appears necessary.

Formula 1 2014

Interesting practice day. Hamilton stopped on the side of the road. Rosberg had overtaken Kvyat under red flags but gets away with it.

Formula 1 2014

Another great race watching 3 and 4 cars going into 1 bend.

Riccardo and Alonso had a brilliant few laps.

Great drive from Hamilton. Can't believe he sounded so down afterwards.

Formula 1 2014

Cracking race today. Great drive from Lewis.

Formula 1 2014

And quite right he was to not to pull over for Rosberg.

Going to be an interesting de brief in the motorhome and and even more interesting season ahead.

Ricardo was brilliant, but the day must be Hamiltons.

Rosberg couldn't get near to Hamilton to pass. Ricciardo has been brilliant this season. If Hamilton hadn't had problems in the last four qualifying sessions he'd have won all four races.

Formula 1 2014

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.

The rest of the season is going to be very very interesting!

Thats the first time I have ever heard a driver booed on the podium.

Coulthard and Jordan should get into the ring and fight it out. EJ is being a bit naive blaming the team, the drivers should be able to think for themselves. Rosberg struggles with that.

Formula 1 2014

It's got more interesting. Rosberg has said he could have got out of the way but didn't deliberately (says Hamilton). Mercedes have a VERY difficult situation here

Mercedes confirmed it!

Vettel was regularly booed on the podium last year.

Formula 1 2014

My view is Rosberg's deliberate actions cost Hamilton the chance of 25 points so Mercedes should stand him down from the next race to even things out.
