Fred Gardner RIP

I'm sad to report that my dad, Fred Gardner, passed away today at 3:00pm from pneumonia. He was 91 years old. Fred attended his first Bees game in 1937 when we were in the top flight and managed to attend games at GP for 8 decades, mostly with my mum and myself in tow. He took me to my first game in January 1962 (a cup tie vs. Leyton Orient: 1-1) and needless to say, given the presence of Brooks, Higgy and Cakebread, I was instantly hooked. Like most of us, I never knew whether to love him or curse him for taking me to GP instead of a more "fashionable" club but deep down I knew he made the right choice. It was typical of our Fred that when told the Bees had beaten Crewe 5-1 on Saturday his first reaction was not, "Brilliant!! We're going up!" but "How did they manage to score one? Where was the defence?" (He would have been a natural GPG-er). He'll be sadly missed but it's comforting to know that he (and the Bees) went out a winner. RIP Fred.

Incredible - a supporter who watched Brentford in the great 30's. Sorry to read of your loss, especially as Fred would have been the same age as my late father, and I wonder if they ever met.

As with my old man, loved the bees and critical right up to the end. I know that I look back on so many good times at Brentford with my dad, true father son bonding stuff...now being passed onto my boys! RIP Fred and if you meet Arthur up there, try not to moan at performances too much ;-)

Fred Gardner RIP

My late father Bill, also took me to my first Bees home match in 1962 - cant recall the opposiiton - but we sat
in the Braemar Road Stand. He too had memories of Brentford pre second world war and of cycling from Chiswick
to Griffin Park and leaving his bike in someones garden in Brook Road
RIP Fred

That's exactly what my mum and dad did too: they'd cycle from Hounslow or Isleworth and park in someone's garden in Brook Rd. By the time I came along my dad had bought an Austin so we would park in The Butts and walk to the ground. The walk back to the car was usually more expletive laden than the walk in as I remember.

Fred Gardner RIP

My late father emigrated to Canada in 1954 and returned for the 71/72 season. My dad walked me around the ground and told me he used to cycle form Isleworth to the home games.I became hooked and have followed the bees ever since.Living in Plymouth now I can only attend a few games.I know this is a hard time for you and your family and my thoughts are with you.
