Fulham 2020/21

Thread topic cleared in advance with wanderer paul. Let's play nicely and not labour the "R word" too early in the season....

Fulham haven't had a very good start to the season, have they.

German football journalist and keen Fulham fan Archie Rhind-Tutt was on the Guardian football podcast on Tuesday. He had a good 5 minutes of gloom about Fulham

"After Wembley I thought we would get more points than last time...now I think we will struggle to get more points than Derby did in 2008"
"The mentality that I encountered when I saw on the supporters trust was to say "it's not my problem" and just to shift it along...there was not enough responsibility being taken..."
"we spent a lot of money on players that are not that good....Knockaert, Bobby Reid, Cavaleiro cost a combined £30m and no other club would have paid that money for players that can't cut it at PL level"
"Caught in a loop of doing what looks right instead of what is actually right"

After their lack of strengthening I thought they would do well to get 20 points. Nothing I've seen since makes me think that's wrong. Moreover, many on their forum think the same!

You think that they will get that many points , from what I saw on Thursday and their results they will be lucky to beat the low points that Derby got when they were relegated . I believe that was 9 points?

I was going to update the post but not now

Keeping up the good work.

When Fulham got promoted, I said to many of my Fulham chums
that they'd come straight back down as they are not good enough.
There aren't many of them that would disagree with that.
Like most Bees, I'm really enjoying their struggle, has helped heal a wound.
Fulham have had, on paper, some of the easier Clubs so far, I can't wait until
they play some of the bigger boys.

West Brom at home next Monday, then West Ham, Everton, Leicester, Man City and Liverpool.

If they don't get anything out of The Baggies, they could realistically lose the next five after that.

I read someone on twitter, possibly a prominent e-sports person (whatever that means - someone who has 34,000 followers anyway) say that it was unforgivable for us to let this terrible Foolham team in to the PL or something to that effect. A fulham fan responded
" If there’s one thing we are doing this season, it’s pissing off the footy hipsters who think Brentford, who LOST the final to us, deserved to go up ahead of us "

To be honest I think the neutral hipsters will be fine with it well before Bees fans are....but maybe the PL will make Fulham fans some special gold straws to clutch in recognition of that "achievement".

Yep, I think the real downward turn was always going to be after the West Brom game.
The bookies are already trying to get punters to cash out on Fulham being relegated LOL

Fulhams biggest problem is Mitrovic
They did ok, when he wasn't in the team last season.

They rely to much on him.

Fulham 2020/21

Fulhams biggest problem is Mitrovic
It's often the case that, when a team has a clear goal-scorer or creator, the players just get lazy and "gerrit to him", assuming that's their responsibility done. It was clear, when that lot did not have Mitrovic available, more than one player scored goals and they all played more like a team. We were similar at times with Sawyers and Benrahma.

Does Fulham’s struggle mean that Bournemouth (3rd from bottom) should have been in the playoffs instead of Swansea in 6th. It would be a far better test to be deserving of promotion.

Fulham 2020/21

We may gloat but next season they will have a nice new riverside stand and millions of ££££££. Move the vitriol away from them and back to where it belongs in Shepherds Bush.

Fulham 2020/21

If they come straight back down which they surely will it's not that much of disaster. They haven't spent big like last time and will pocket a year of PL cash plus parachute payments (assuming they haven't been scrapped).

Same goes for WBA.

I might be wrong but in the very early years of play offs didn’t one of the bottom sides in premier league also enter the play offs with three sides from the Championship?

Yup in 86/87 Charlton held on to their First Division status by overcoming Ipswich and then Leeds. I saw the 2 games v Ipswich and the home v Leeds, they were playing at Selhurst Park then.
In 87/88 Chelsea failed to retain their First Division status, beating Blackburn but winning 1-0 at home to Middlesbrough but unable to overcome losing 2-0 in the first leg. I saw both of their home games. There was a lot of trouble in that final game.
I think it then changed to 4 teams from the lower division, possibly because of the trouble

I was at that final game too. Thought I was going to get cut in half standing behind a crash barrier between the shed and the west stand. Mayhem..

My vague memory is of a steward opening the gate and letting fans go through toward the pitch at one stage behind the goal

Can we change the thread title to Bees up Fulham down please?

How embarrassing.

We’ve done sod all this season in the League.
Yes, they’re not very good either but, after beating us in the POs, we should just keep quiet and get our own squad in order before shouting, “Bees Up, Fulham down.”

We are 4 points from 2nd spot!!

Feels a bit rich to make a thread poking fun at them imo...

I'm not at all surprised they're where they are in the table. It's what I'd have predicted before the season and I honestly think it'd be an achievement for them to simply finish 19th as opposed to rock bottom, but if the tables had turned and we happened to win that game in August, we'd be in their position right now - whether we'd kept hold of Watkins/Benrahma or not.

Despite all our league victories over them in recent years, they've been to the Premier League twice in the past 3 years while we seem to constantly choke at the final hurdle. Even if they don't pick up another point this season, at least they actually got there.

Rubbish, if we had gone up we wouldn't have had the dismal start that they have had.
We had the better team and sqaud with plenty more goals in us.
The minute that final whistle went at Wembley, they were doomed to a season of misery.
Bring it on!!

I think we would have done a bit better than them but I am pretty sure this season would have been a relegation battle for us in the Prem. I think the shortened pre-season and lack of fans would have hurt us. Generally teams that do not smash their way into promotion struggle (apart from the odd exception like Huddersfield).

They did. I am unsure exactly why it changed but clearly it was to the lower divisions benefit to guarantee 3 up / 3 down rather than providing an escape route.
From reading about those project big picture proposals I got the impression the football league changed it as a horse trade for some other changes around that time. Possibly the increase in the top division to 22 teams in the early 90s (which was the reversed a few years later).

Re the post above:
I don't agree it would be better apart from anything else at least the lower division clubs have earned the right to play for promotion. "earning" it from coming 18th in the PL seems a bit rubbish. I understand it would have been a tougher test for Fulham but a bit rich from our fans.... that's our own silly fault for not being a tough enough test

Plenty of vitriol around for both our main rivals :sorted:

This is a thread to discuss how they are getting on this season, and clearly that is not very well so far.

Re the thread name:
I was asked not to label it a "relegation/lolz" thread on the basis that we can chat nicely or not chat at all. It may not bring out the best side of people especially if things are still a bit raw...

Fulham 2020/21

I think that the last few years have shown that Fucham are a very good Championship team and a piss poor Premier League team.

I strongly believe that when we finally get promoted, we will comfortably hold our own whilst the river rats continue to yo-yo and they will be the ones chasing us.

Unfortunately it also means we’ll never play the rara’s again.

The first play off system didn't work as it caused crowd violence as one Club ended up being relegated in front of another celebrating. Think it stopped after the Chelsea v Boro riot at The Bridge. I was in The Shed that day, it was carnage.

Mid table. To say we would have done a bit better than them is an insult to the talent we had and still have in our squad. Fulham went up with pretty much the same players that were relegated out of the Prem last time. They'll win sweet FA this season, probably the lowest points tally since the Prem started.

Mmm : Derby 2007/08 just 11 pts & -69 GD :ROFLMAO:
Well, FFC are doing great so far with their one draw & -9 GD after 6

Only a club like Fulham could sign a player, Anthony Knockhart, for a reported 10 - 15 million, play him in 3 league Cup ties and bin him off to Forest on loan.
If he is not good enough then don't sign him.
And yet keep Tim Ream.
Loan out Alfie Mason.
Keep Tim Ream.
Really?
Must be good reason I guess.
Ream was awful in the Premier League 2 years ago.
He is even worse now.
Any team with him in the side at that level will concede over 80 goals a season.
Dennis Odoi is not much better but okayish.
No team gets relegated in October, but Fulham are showing everyone that you can show very early signs of a club that has lost its way after 6 games.
On the pitch and off.
The only excuse I can give is they didn't have a lot of time after beating us in the play off final to sort stuff out especially after the transfer window of 2018.

I think the loan agreement included a commitment to buy.

Seem to remember Charlton beating Leeds at Birmingham, in the early years of the Play Offs.

That was a bit lively too.

Fulham 2020/21

Having just seen part of the Brighton Burnley game, it was truly horrendous. I always thought Fulham was nailed on for relegation with West Brom plus one. But after what I have seen, both Brighton and Burnley will struggle.

Fulham 2020/21

I was disappointed not to be able to see Maupay and Brighton on Sky and then relieved when I saw it finished 0-0

Fulham 2020/21

Good work agent Lookman.

Fulham 2020/21

BBC:
"Ha ha ha ha ha!

That's one of the worst penalties you will ever see!

Ademola Lookman goes for a Panenka and completely fluffs it - it barely reaches the goal! Lukasz Fabianski has time to start to dive, stop, and wait for the ball to reach him.

Abysmal."
